Some of the most generic bottom of the barrel pop rock out there. I’m shocked at how painful I found West Coast, Dan sounds like a literal broken record on this song it’s almost funny. Believe it or not Imagine Dragons have actually made a listenable album! I’m not saying it’s good, but at the very least if someone had this on in their car it wouldn’t drive me into a frenzy hearing it. Maybe that’s a lie, there are still some all time stinkers on here. The bane of service workers everywhere. Even if you didn’t wanna hear this thing well too bad! The lyrics here are so cringy and the instrumentals try so hard to be triumphant and loud it’s unbearable. The only thing this ever motivates me to do is put something better on. A lovely little collection of songs. I love the more folksy vibes of tracks such as Autumn Beds or Guilty Coker Spaniels. Really wish we could see more of that side of the band. Modest Mouse in their prime were so dang good even their compilation b-sides album is better than most stuff I’ll hear in a given year. The guitars on Broke sound pretty as all hell and the buildup towards the breakdown at the end of the song, oh that’s the good stuff. Long considered one of their most weak efforts, I can’t say I dislike it as much as others. It is definitely bloated and has some of the weakest songs they’ve ever written *glares directly at Pistol*. But there is a fantastic 11 or so track album in here. Lampshades on Fire is yet another certified banger of a lead single and shows they still got the juice. This was the first album I ever heard from Modest Mouse so I have some very fond childhood memories of these songs. It still holds up though! The sound here is a lot more upbeat and pop sounding but it doesn’t feel like them selling out to make commercial music cause they are still clearly giving it their all here. Modest Mouse really grow as a band here. This album feels a lot colder with the guitars and the lyrics are more grand and philosophical with some of the most beautiful lines of their careers. Christine has such a beautiful voice and is really able to shine on cuts like Patterns which oh my GOD. The guitar is hypnotic and sweeps you away all while Christine lays bare her struggles with religion and its affect on her. The rest of the album is just as good making this a strong debut. Ratboys exude a fun energy that infectiously takes you over. The guitar part on the chorus or Tixis, that jam session that is Folk Song For Jazz, the goofiness of Bugs! There’a not much to than it’s fun, it’s a fun time. Fav tracks: Pivotal Dates, Postman Song, Tixis

The lyrics are cryptic yet emotional. The screams are fantastic and work so well over the more twangy instrumentation than you’d expect from the genre.
