Imagine Dragons - Mercury – Act 1
10

I genuinely do not know who this is for. This is like eating unseasoned chicken for dinner. Absolutely no flavor, just the most boring snoozefest of tracks Imagine Dragons have ever released. Also some of the most embarrassing too. Cutthroat is trying so hard I genuinely burst out laughing listening to it. Unbearable, even by Imagine Dragons standards. Least fav tracks: Cutthroat, It’s Okay, Follow You

Imagine Dragons - Origins

Some of the most generic bottom of the barrel pop rock out there. I’m shocked at how painful I found West Coast, Dan sounds like a literal broken record on this song it’s almost funny. Cool Out sounds like a bad Coldplay song I feel like I’ve heard this exact thing a dozen times before. Which I guess is better than the hot mess that is Digital which does not blend alley any aspect together well. The lyrics on this are also laughably bad, I can’t take any of it ... read more

Imagine Dragons - Smoke + Mirrors

Believe it or not Imagine Dragons have actually made a listenable album! I’m not saying it’s good, but at the very least if someone had this on in their car it wouldn’t drive me into a frenzy hearing it. Maybe that’s a lie, there are still some all time stinkers on here. The stomp and holler of I Bet My Life is truly unbearable, but those moments aren’t completly littering the track list here. Nothing is gonna really stick with me, but I consider that a blessing ... read more

Imagine Dragons - Night Visions

Imagine Dragons had hype around them when they first starting blowing up on the scene, and honestly I can kinda see why. I don’t actually hate everything here and there are some songs I do actually enjoy. Every Night is a sweet lil song. It’s Time has that twee little Mandolin which painfully dates the thing, but idk it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever heard. There are the usual Imagine Dragonisms that will come to plague their future releases like on Radioactive, but ... read more

Imagine Dragons - Evolve

The bane of service workers everywhere. Even if you didn’t wanna hear this thing well too bad! The lyrics here are so cringy and the instrumentals try so hard to be triumphant and loud it’s unbearable. The only thing this ever motivates me to do is put something better on. Least fav tracks: Thunder, Believer, Yesterday

Modest Mouse - Everywhere And His Nasty Parlour Tricks

These honestly has my preferred version of Night on the Sun which makes this worth a listen alone, but I don’t really have much else to say about the rest. They’re okay, inoffensive listens, but there isn’t a whole lot you’d miss here. Fav tracks: Night on the Sun, You’re The Good Things

Modest Mouse - No One's First and You're Next

A lovely little collection of songs. I love the more folksy vibes of tracks such as Autumn Beds or Guilty Coker Spaniels. Really wish we could see more of that side of the band. The crowning jewel here though is of course King Rat. This is a song that truly feels epic for them. The banjo that greats us at the opening only for those strings to kick in before Isaac starts telling us this engrossing story. This all building up to a frantic conclusion with blaring horns and manic ramblings and ... read more

Modest Mouse - Building Nothing Out of Something

Modest Mouse in their prime were so dang good even their compilation b-sides album is better than most stuff I’ll hear in a given year. The guitars on Broke sound pretty as all hell and the buildup towards the breakdown at the end of the song, oh that’s the good stuff. Baby Blue Sedan is on the physical version of Crowded West and it’s very nice it has a release on this as well. I’m not sure how many others would share this opinion but Sleep Walkin’ is one of my ... read more

Modest Mouse - The Golden Casket

It’s always painful when one of your favorite bands releases something you don’t really care for, but man it has been three years and I have hardly ever revisited most tracks on here. I wouldn’t say most of the songs are actively bad, they're… fine I guess? But I hardly ever feel engaged in what’s going on. There are a handful of highlights such as We’re Lucky which is good enough I’m at least glad this album came out so we could enjoy it. I wish I had ... read more

Modest Mouse - Strangers to Ourselves

Long considered one of their most weak efforts, I can’t say I dislike it as much as others. It is definitely bloated and has some of the weakest songs they’ve ever written *glares directly at Pistol*. But there is a fantastic 11 or so track album in here. Lampshades on Fire is yet another certified banger of a lead single and shows they still got the juice. There’s plenty of great tracks here, it’s just a shame you have to trudge a bit more than usual to find them. Fav ... read more

Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

This was the first album I ever heard from Modest Mouse so I have some very fond childhood memories of these songs. It still holds up though! The sound here is a lot more upbeat and pop sounding but it doesn’t feel like them selling out to make commercial music cause they are still clearly giving it their all here. The high point here are incredibly high and make for not just some of my favorite Modest Mouse songs but some of my favorite songs period. I adore Parting of the Sensory, the ... read more

Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Love Bad News
90

Modest Mouse’s most easily accessible album and normally the only one people know about when I mention this band. Which is a shame, but the songs here are still fantastic. The opening stretch is flawless with back to back 10/10 songs. The World At Large is a devastating opener which leads so well into Float On. Idk if it’s their most popular song, it is so cheerful I can’t help but feel a weight is lifted from me anytime I hear it. That’s maybe the greatest achievement ... read more

Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica

Modest Mouse really grow as a band here. This album feels a lot colder with the guitars and the lyrics are more grand and philosophical with some of the most beautiful lines of their careers. The Stars Are Projectors, Lives, Life Like Weeds, these are just brimming with so many interesting and heartbreaking moments it’s devastating yet beautiful at the same time. Yet another stellar entry in the Modest Mouse catalog who could simply do no wrong in their early days. Fav tracks: 3rd Planet, ... read more

Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West
98

A quintessential album for anyone who also feels incredibly trapped by this world we’ve made for ourselves. Who would’ve thought someone could write a song about parking lots and have it be a damning indictment for suburban living but also have a cathartic chorus for release? I’ve always loved Jesus Christ Was An Only Child, it sounds so unique for a Modest Mouse song with the violin really shining here. Cowboy Dan and Trailer Trash and such classics I’m not sure ... read more

Modest Mouse - This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About
85

Filled to the brim with sadness and melancholy. A lot of the tracks here just go on and on and truly feel like you are stuck alone in your car dumb to the suburban landscape around you. How else are you supposed to feel in this world we have destroyed and for what? To drive on highways breaking apart connecting endless commercial chain stores? Beach Side Property remains one of their most powerful songs, Isaac screaming about the destruction of our environment for frivolously means. The ... read more

Pool Kids - Music to Practice Safe Sex to

Christine has such a beautiful voice and is really able to shine on cuts like Patterns which oh my GOD. The guitar is hypnotic and sweeps you away all while Christine lays bare her struggles with religion and its affect on her. The rest of the album is just as good making this a strong debut. Fav tracks: Patterns, $5 Subtweet, Overly Verbose Email Series, Pt. III

Ratboys - AOID
70

Ratboys exude a fun energy that infectiously takes you over. The guitar part on the chorus or Tixis, that jam session that is Folk Song For Jazz, the goofiness of Bugs! There’a not much to than it’s fun, it’s a fun time. Fav tracks: Pivotal Dates, Postman Song, Tixis

Home Is Where - I Became Birds
90

The lyrics are cryptic yet emotional. The screams are fantastic and work so well over the more twangy instrumentation than you’d expect from the genre. It’s too short and I’m always surprised how quickly it goes by but not a note is wasted in those short 18 min. Fav track: Ling Distance Conjoined Twins

A concept album about 9/11 less in plot points but the general feeling it has left us in over 20 years later.
MacDonald sings about a world that is dying, experiencing 9/11 terrors everyday. But at the end of the day everyone goes back to work on 9/12.The end of the world isn't some grand event, it's just another day and it's taking forever. We're all whales offering ourselves to harpoons we possessed ourselves. Absurdly dark but god every song on here is fantastic and shows why Home Is Here is ... read more

The Decemberists - Picaresque

PEAK! This has everything one could want from a Decemberists release, unconventional instrumentation, strange but captivating narratives, beautiful melodies, and I cannot stress enough the magnum opus that is Mariners Revenge. A staple in their catalogue and for good reason. I get so much nostalgia listening to this thing, it truly is a grand production that deserves to be sat down and listened to with a lyric book in hand. Fav tracks: The Mariner’s Revenge Song, On The Bus Mall, We Both ... read more
