The Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death
88

Bloated and the "sexy" type tracks just have not aged well. But also some of the greatest hip hop songs of all time

Lil Wayne - Tha Carter
68

So fucking bloated but damn is the good stuff pretty fun. And a pretty progenerative album for the clubby trappy sound

The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die
88

The skit on Respect makes me consider taking my own life. That would top 3 Biggie songs ever and my go to aux, but no we can't have nice things because sex skits exist. Hey Did You Guys Know That's Actually a Real Audio Recording Of Biggie Having Sex! Thanks To Diddy We Know That Fun Fact! Isn't That Fun!

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
95

Better a Jack of Reality than a Master of Puppets or whatever

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
95

They're Out To Get Me IM TELLING YOU THEY'RE OUT TO GET ME. THEY'RE COMING FOR ME AAHH AAHHH AAAHHHH AHHH AAAHHHHHH

Bladee - Cold Visions
58

Honestly this album is pretty meh. Super bloated as everyone knows. And honestly I guess I just don't get the Bladee hype. Half his fans just seem to like him ironically. Besides a few decent song ideas and concepts or funny lines here and there I don't feel like this is any different from tons of other mediocre rage that people would usually shit all over, but swedish twink doing rap funny

André 3000 - New Blue Sun
62

Glad to see three stacks back into music and it's cool that this exposed some people to the world of ambient. Besides that I can't say I love this project much. The flute feels very synthetic and not super appealing as a part of the atmospheric soundscapes here. And there's just not a lot going on besides said flute. A pretty mediocre bar for ambient in my opinion and lacking a lot of the creativity that made Andre's work with Outkast so incredible.

The HIRS Collective - We're Still Here
78

BLISTERING GAYNESS. TRANSITIONING MEANS YOUR FACE GOES FROM HAVING SKIN TO NOT HAVING SKIN

Squid - O Monolith
80

goofy little guy rock. Just some fun bouncy winding modern rock. like Squid! Squid!

Mitski - The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We
80

Probably Mistski's best to date. Some really pretty folk-y stuff on here. Maybe not quite as explosive as my usual taste still very pretty

Sampha - Lahai
88

Yeah this is a pretty big high point for neo soul. There is so much detail on the production. Just little additions that elevate this album so much higher than some of it's contemporary. It makes the soft sweet pretty melodies much more than just that which for me is key to making modern soul interesting. Also helps that Sampha is a vocal beast as always

70

some dirty disgusting trap beats with some of the goofiest most over the top but also pretty amusing bars from sexyy

Tim Hecker - Virgins
100

Everybody wants to make ambient music, but no one wants to listen to ambient music.

Yeah this is pretty extraordinary. Just about every minute of this album feels transcendent. The texture fills your ears with every song is gorgeous. I honestly can't tell if there's samples of wind blowing or if that's just the sonic quality of all the sounds washing around the speakers like a river.

Edit: (92 -> 95): Inspires me.
Edit: (95 -> 98): Really inspires me.

Knocked Loose - You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To
95

I’m still fairly inexperienced with metal so I have a little trouble reviewing it, but to my ears this album is Awesome. I mean this album Rips!!! For me, this is everything I want out of a metal album. It’s so tight yet there’s so much going all the time. Every track feels like it’s constantly evolving and switching up. There’s not a moment of stagnation. It’s so dynamic and interesting. Blood pumping all the way through but distinct in every corner. ... read more

Laufey - Everything I Know About Love

I love eating grass! Yummy Grass! Mmm Mmm Mmmm! Nom Nom grass mmmm.
This is music for looking at your sleeping cat and thinking "Wow.. my life is so aesthetic" but really you're gonna fail that calculus test you have tomorrow cause you didn't study.

Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun
88

Got more neo soul than a sock with hole

Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
68

Got SKINNY cause all I eat is LUNCH uknowwhatimsayin?
I hate to say it. I really really like Billie. But I think I'm a tad disappointed. The production and vocals on this album generally sound pretty great. But that's about all there is too it. Even though they sound good there is often a pretty intense lack of diversity or creativity. It's just kind of bland, especially in the second half. And on that front the writing is pretty dull consistently. It all feels generic and non-personal. ... read more

Xiu Xiu - FORGET
98

HayChocoBananas! This slaps about as hard as an abusive father. Honestly just pure Xiu Xiu in all the best ways. The mix of synth and noise sounds fantastic. Some sections especially early in the record are truly crushing. But underneath it all there are also some truly catchy beautiful melodies. Jamie is as eccentric vocally as ever and only continues to push the boundaries on what is acceptable behavior in a recording studio. Amazing album and one of their best to date.

Xiu Xiu - Plays The Music of Twin Peaks
92

It may be based on other musical works but it is Xiu Xiu through and through. The things they do to these tracks are just insane. Some of their most atmospheric, creeping, and shrieking songs to date. The glimmering electric piano type sounds that appear on much of this have such a simple nighttime feel to them, but Xiu Xiu adds so much extra texture and sound. Sounds that would feel like a simple notes of atmosphere are transformed into vast glittering soundscapes with Jamie's tortured vocals ... read more

Xiu Xiu - Knife Play
88

A classic among Xiu Xiu projects and still very strong many years after it's release. This still contains some of their most blistering and overwhelming songs. While I personally prefer some of their later works Knife Work is still amazing and a true beacon of misery (in a good Xiu Xiu type way)

Edit: (85 -> 88): The diverse instrumentation really stands out on this one.

"I totally understand what you mean when you talk about patience. I had a very similar experience attempting to listen to Swans To Be Kind and only later being able to finish it and love it. Having that experience before listening to IRA is probably what made this such an easy listen for me personally. It is truly a profound experience to have in terms of learning and growing in your ability to consume art. I will fight you a little bit because this album has also had a life changing effect on me. This album may be the single most inspiring piece of art I have ever experienced. I have thought about this album every single day since finishing it because every day I feel a fundamental Need to make music like this. It truly is a special album."
On Eminem - The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)
"@Mychal I've listened to his back catalogue Extensively, trust. This is the same lines about pronouns and Caitlyn Jenner for like 10 songs. Don't worry girl, I get it. The idea of slim shady doesn't just go over my head. Like I said Guilty Conscious 2 was decent cause it was the actual "Death" part of that concept. The rest is just an attempt to adapt slim shady to the modern day and failing miserably. He sounds like an "anti-sjw" edgelord in a Rainbow 6 lobby. It's just corny and cringe"
On Gengachu's review of clipping. - Splendor & Misery
"Great breakdown of the album"
On Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
"@Dallamalla For me touching a good amount of other genres doesn't always mean that it's diverse. Yes it hits on pop, altpop, electronic, indie, synthpop, even a bit of rock, etc. But to me a lot of the diversity in that kinda gets washed away under the soft alt pop style. It all has a cool soft blue filter over it. It takes a lot of different inspirations but makes them more one note. And that may not be a bad thing cause with some albums it can make them cohesive, which it does do here, but I also think it takes away the flavor of those influences. To again reference the synths on Chihiro, they stand out on the album, but there's just not that much more to them outside the soft pop sound, ie not much diversity."
