In a world where many hip hop producers go on to make "solo records" that just feel like giant playlists, tailor made to rack up numbers on the streaming algorithms, it's quite nice to hear a record that's truly just a genuine expression of emotion and sound.
There's nothing overly flashy about the feature list (or in fact, lack of a properly listed feature list), and nothing gaudy about the presentation.
Instead what we get is a very genuine (primarily instrumental) body of music, ... read more
Lots of good ideas and some solid tunes in here, but you definitely can tell a lot of these are just polished throwaways...
Favorite track: MAN ON THE MOON / NEW SHOES
Least Favorite: ANIMAL / KEEP IT SOUTHERN
Kimbra's latest record may be her best, packed with tight production, vocal arrangements, and a variety of styles, whether be Synth-Pop tracks that sound like natural progressions musically from Primal Heart, or darker Electronica tracks that sound reminiscent of stuff from Yeule's Glitch Princess or even some of the more experimental moments off of Donda.
My only real complaint is that based on the initial singles, I thought we were getting a deep exploration of a darker more minimalistic ... read more
On Trippie's latest project, he has some decent ideas but they're either ruined by the pure overstuffed length of this project, or by horrendous mixing.
Favorite Track: MANSION MUSIK
Least Favorite: KRZY TRAIN
Yachty pulls a hard left turn from his previous sound, instead making this record a nice mix of psychedelic funk/rock.
Sonically, it's easily the best thing Yachty's ever put out, thanks to the bulk of production handled by from himself, Patrick Wimberly (Joji, Chairlift), Justin Raisen & Sad Pony (Yves Tumor, MGMT, Charli XCX), and Jacob Portrait (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), alongside some guest producers who turn up at points, including Magdelena Bay & Mac DeMarco.
Its sonically ... read more
Kevin manages to singlehandedly make a beautiful goodbye record for BROCKHAMPTON, thanks to some revealing lyrics and fantastic production from bearface and boylife.
As someone who enjoyed his record "Voicenotes" this album was quite a letdown.
While I did like the initial single "Light Switch" on first listen, the song lost replayability fast for me as some of the more overdone elements of it started to wear thin.
Unfortunately the best word I can use to describe this album is "Unflattering."
My first complaint is the vocal performances themselves. In the past, Charlie has proven himself to be a capable vocalist, yet this ... read more
Easily one of the best debuts I've ever heard. The fantastic genres blend into this very woozy, heartbroken and textural record that likely will be an album fans of artists like BROCKHAMPTON, Frank Ocean, Tyler, The Creator, Joji, etc etc can enjoy, yet it's very unique in a way I can't quite place.
My only complaint is that amphetamine should be longer.
Solid Debut Record, however lacks punch / clarity in places.
After stumbling across the DPR REGIME + IAN's debut EP not too long ago, I was really curious to see how this album turned out. And for the most part, it's a pretty good starting record. Throughout the record we get a fairly consistent blend of R&B, Pop, Alternative, Hip Hop and even mildly avantgarde inspired music.
However sometimes I feel like the mixing decisions hurt some of the songs more then any of the music itself. ... read more
