A classic, but it's a bit overrated. I was never blown away by the chipmunk production like other people, it's great and puts me in a good mood, but there isn't a beat that shocks me. This is still an amazing project, it's so great hearing this uplifting, relatable and energetic version of Kanye, and this is certainly revolutionary for the time, having aged beautifully. I do think tracks like Slow Jamz, Spaceship and Never Let Me Down aren't quite as good as people make ... read more
Daringer underperformed here, I was missing that punch in a lot of songs, but still good beats. Rome kills it on the verses, obviously, but the choruses need some work. Features did alright, thought they could've done better. Good project, I was just expecting more from this quality of artist and producer.
This album is so underrated it's not even funny. Some songs here are forgettable but overall the beat selection is some of the best I've ever seen. Mach-Hommy does outrap Fahim every time he shows up, but I found the 100 Tape Legend's rapping pretty good.
Everybody calls this underrated, yet it stays underrated. Ghost Town, All Mine and Violent Crimes are the only songs you hear online, but the intro track, for example, is amazing even though I hear no one mention it. I personally rarely listen to this album and its songs, really, apart from Ghost Town, but every time I relisten I'm surprised at how good this is. It's also has little to no skips, something which most Kanye albums since Yeezus aren't capable of achieving.
The album where Mac showed he wasn't just a frat rapper - matter of fact, where he became one of the most creative and introspective rappers out, starting to implement elements of R&B, a genre he would end up prioritizing in his final albums. Like any Mac song, this is a sad listen considering his unfortunate passing, but if I'm being honest this to me is a maybe more versatile but weaker version of Faces. There are some REALLY good songs (the first 4 tracks are one hell of a ... read more
I don't really have words for this album, I'm assuming you know the deal. Very experimental, very industrial, some songs are amazing, some I never adored. It's one of the albums I listen to the least by Kanye, but you gotta appreciate this movement and the work put in here. Bound 2 is one of Kanye's most overrated songs ever by the way - it's great but not even top 4 here.
On my first review to this I said in only 3 weeks of listening this was one of my favourite mixtapes ever. 3 months after listening to this, this is one of my favourite pieces of music ever. This is what hip-hop is about to me. Rest In Peace Capital STEEZ.
A beautiful album that every hip-hop fan should like to a certain degree. I'm not the biggest J. Cole fan, I always found him to be my exact kind of artist in theory but something about the execution never resonated with me, I don't know why, since I've always loved him on features. Talking about this album, I think it's his best. The Fall-Off comes close, but this one is way more concise. I like every track here, but the highs aren't insanely high for me, at least not ... read more
This is such a weird album for me - there's no doubt this was a huge cultural moment for hip-hop, but if we're looking at just the music, it's very inconsistent. I get that some songs fit into the album concept, and that helps it a bit, but at the end of the day I'm not a fan (wouldn't listen regularly) to 2/3 of this album. The songs are by no means bad, I just don't think they're up to par to the quality of one of the greatest music artists of all time. ... read more
This is like a better version of WHO MADE THE SUNSHINE. Insane feature list, in both rappers and producers, the Griselda camp all nearly here and then we get this. Don't get me wrong this is still pretty good, but man this could've been a contender for the best project of the Hitler Wears Hermes series. Instead we get the predecessor to the trap slop from And Then You Pray For me in FlyGod Jr and a very underwhelming beat on the most stacked song, Science Class (yes I know the ... read more
Bring this Carti back. By no means is this a masterpiece, it's a pretty bloated tracklist as you'd expect from Carti but the production here is special. It's not quite Cloud Rap, but it's close. It's so dreamy, almost hypnotic - hence why Carti is the perfect artist for it, he just lets you get lost in the music. The features are alright, Bryson Tiller, Uzi and Skepta are the only worth mentioning for me. Some of the vamp's best songs ever are here.
A decent little addition to Westside Gunn's catalog and to the series HEELS HAVE EYES. There are some really good songs here but the the rest is okay. Nothing really crazy here, but the features really did it for me here. Brother Tom Sos had the best verse on the project honestly, but Rome Streetz, Benny and Stove all did their job very well. Production is great, I love this more hazy and dusty sound this mixtape has, compared to the primarily grimy sound Gunn opts for (apart from FREE ... read more
I want to preface this by saying I've never been a big rock fan. I've never been really attached to a musical genre besides hip-hop, ever. Ok so now to the actual review: can we normalise not forcing ourselves to give high ratings to music we don't like that much? This is obviously a generational classic that is still impactful to this day, the vocals are outstanding and the overall ambient is executed very well, but I don't hear this often. In fact, I listened to this album ... read more
This is JUST passable for me. I know it's a hot take, but this album is so incredibly overrated. I understand someone could have nostalgia of childhood memories with this project or just relate to it a lot, but apart from that I don't see how this is special. It has 2 or 3 bangers, sure, but the rest is just so average, with some songs being borderline annoying. The delivery to me sounds corny, and I'm a big fan of the message in this album, don't get me wrong, but that ... read more
Part of me still hopes this is irony. Assuming it's not, this is barely music.
I can't really relate to this album, which I'm sure hurts the experience, but this is still a very beautiful, though moody album. I find some songs to be a bit overrated, but I also think some are underrated, so it evens out. Overall very introspective and emotional lyricism by MAVI, which we know he can execute very well. The production is quite hit or miss for me here, some songs are very creative, pleasing and addicting, while others sound pretty forgettable, either for sounding a ... read more
The first 6 track-run here is actually amazing, this would've gotten a higher score if it weren't for the last 3 where the quality goes down for me (still good nonetheless). I think Boldy is barring really well here, this is by no means a sub-par performance, but Alchemist gets in his BAG here, I think he's the best part of this project.
Don't have much to say about this one. Stove, Brother Tom Sos and Estee Nack compliment Gunn pretty well on these songs. I feel nothing really stands out, but it's a good listen. A lot of pretty good songs, only 3 skips for me (at most) and Gunn's rapping really improved here.
JVB's best album for me. I'm not exactly the biggest fan of the type of hip-hop they're inserted in, but the passion and care they give to these albums really do it for me. Even songs with content matter I don't care for become fun tracks to brighten up someone's mood, and that's important in music. That being said, this is their best production to date, songs like HAVE TO CRY and WASSUP are not only very creative, but hard-hitting in different ways. I've ... read more
