Drake - Take Care
87

What happened to this Drake man? This is my favourite Drake album so far, as someone that hasn't heard Nothing Was The Same yet front-to-back, and no other album/mixtape came even CLOSE to this. Maybe one of the best Pop Rap albums ever, Drake did a perfect mix of some of his best signing AND rapping. There's some bloat to this album, which weighs down my rating a bit, but the highs here are crazy. If you're a die-hard Kendrick fan that's been gaslit to think Drake was this ... read more

Joey Bada$$ - Lonely At The Top
78

Yes, this is Joey's worst album, but I think it's overhated. I really appreciated him experimenting on some tracks here - while I do think those tracks are sub-par in quality, I'd much rather this than Joey sticking to his sound the whole time with no change. Those tracks aside, this is a great project, there's a good mix of energetic, hype, chill and classic boom bap tracks. The features all did pretty great, but I will admit the chorus on STILL comes off a bit corny. This ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers
84

It's a hard one to rate, the content matter is very personal, therapeutic and introspective. I don't think song for song this is on level of his 3 previous albums, but depending on who you're speaking to this could very well be their favourite Kendrick project and they'll have every reason to stand on that. All of the features and performances are so calculated, where the priority is to convey an emotion and/or message, rather than straight up bars, flows and rhymes. I ... read more

Rome Streetz - Noise Kandy 5
81

Rome Streetz doing what he does best - killing any beat he raps over. The production can be a bit hit or miss, with some tracks having pretty forgettable production but then Stunna and Shake & Bake, my 2 favourite songs here, have amazing production. Feature list is amazing, but there were some tracks that could've been cut off.

Lupe Fiasco - Samurai
83

I love Lupe's music in theory, it's a shame for some reason it doesn't stick with me as I hoped it would. This is a very good album, it's so short yet Lupe's intricate lyricism ensures anyone that multiple listens and more time with this album are indeed necessary. I love the beat selection on this project and it has some of my favourite Lupe songs ever in Samurai and Til Eternity, though I'm just getting started with his discography.

Drake - If You're Reading This It's Too Late
58

This mixtape is so overrated bro I get that it was hype when it dropped as a surprise but I only see like 5 great songs here. I'm not listening to a 68min long mixtape for 25 minutes of quality, and I'm not even a Drake hater.

Playboi Carti - Whole Lotta Red
55

I'll make this quick. There was no need for 1h+ of this. It's a classic, but that doesn't mean it's good.

Kendrick Lamar - GNX
80

For Kendrick's standards, this is definitely the mid-pack. I get that it's not as serious of an album, and I respect that, but that doesn't change my rating of it. Some songs here are really good, but gnx and dodger blue are some of Kendrick's worst songs in a long time. This is still Kendrick, though. At the end of the day, it's at least great lyricism and fun beats.

Earl Sweatshirt - Live Laugh Love
82

Earl's happy, we're happy. He shows some amazing growth on this project, and just an overall more positive outlook on life, specially in songs full of quotables like exhaust and TOURMALINE. It didn't blow me away in any way, a lot of these songs are just good, but I don't think that was the intention and maybe i'm not the exact target audience.

MAVI - Let the Sun Talk
89

This is a debut album. A DEBUT. Released at the tail end of the 2010's, it's genuinely in contention for not just one of the best underground (if you would even consider it that) projects of the 2010's, but of the entire hip-hop genre of that era. You can tell MAVI adores Earl Sweatshirt and his style of writing, but he never feels like a copycat for a single second. The personal and introspective writing, the beautiful beat selection, carefully chosen interludes, the near ... read more

Benny the Butcher - Tana Talk 4
81

Very solid project. Johnny P's Caddy is the clear standout, and deservingly so, but all tracks here are great. That being said, the album, apart from the intro, lacks any other crazy good track. I love Bust A Brick Nick and Weekends In The Perry's, but then it's a whole lot of 7 and 8/10s. As always, Benny is just excelling at what he does best - the hardest street bars over drums. I think the album's production left a bit to be wanted, there only being maybe 4 tracks where ... read more

The Cow is one of Conwa- I mean Westside Gunn's best songs EVER. The rest of this album is very average. The great beats like the one on Nasty are let down by a disappointing Gunn performance and then there are a lot of just mid beats man. Not Daringer's greatest batch. Nitro is an underwhelming collaboration between the main Griselda boys and most songs are forgettable. I'm making it seem worse than it actually is, the other songs aren't THAT bad (Mr. Fuji is a sick song as ... read more

Yeat - Up 2 Më
57

I'm the first to admit I had a moment with this album. Matter of fact, this was one of my first front-to-back album listens. At the time I thought this album was great, but with me expanding my taste and the overall effect of time, this album has aged poorly. It's still pretty good, very fun songs here, don't get me wrong, but I really wouldn't care if this album suddenly disappeared from existence, no offense twizzy. This has made me miss prime Yeat though I will admit.

slayr - Half Blood (BloodLuxe)
79

Definitely the best rage rap I've heard to this day. it's not a classic or anything but it was very impressive for the subgenre it belongs in. I had a lot of fun listening to this, though it gets a tad bit repetitive.

Westside Gunn - WHO MADE THE SUNSHINE
70

A big ol' mess. Some tracks are great, some are so unnecessary. Why did Gunn feel the need to get such a stacked feature list for an average project.

Chris Travis - Pizza and Codeine
84

I don't do drugs. No one should do drugs. But I see why the album is named that way.

Pusha T - DAYTONA
85

Everyone calls this a modern classic... They're right! One of the most consistent rappers of this generation, Pusha T, pairs up with Kanye, who entered his second wind around this time and create a very short but fantastic album. It's crazy how in every track at least one of the 2 kills it. Pusha T makes even the simpler beats work well, best shown on Come Back Baby, but then Kanye absolutely OBLITERATES songs like The Games We Play and Santeria. I think Infrared isn't anything ... read more

MIKE - MAY GOD BLESS YOUR HUSTLE
82

I wonder how it must feel for an artist for people to claim your best project, over all these years, is your very first one. At least that's the opinion I hear from most people. As for me, I don't think this is his best. I love the vulnerability and how abstract it is at times, but, in the least disrespectful way possible, MIKE has very similar verses in terms of content matter here, over beats I'm not crazy over. I also don't think the feature are up to par with MIKE's ... read more

Mick Jenkins - The Patience
85

Here's my proposal: switch the definition of UNDERRATED to this album right here. Some of these track ratings are so low I took it personally, and I'm not even a die-hard Mick Jenkins listener. The introspectiveness of this album, the beat selection, punchlines, feature list, EVERYTHING is so well executed. Amazing lyricism and albums don't get much more concise than this. 27 minutes, 11 songs, and not a single one is less than great for me. I will say though, Show & Tell and ... read more

Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
86

When LGSEO dropped, I figured I should listen to their older discography, which turned out to be a great decision. This is really a fun album. This is really the Pharrell era of production, with very little samples used and just creative beats. The chemistry between the two brothers is really evident, but I do think the features could be better.
