Mount Eerie - A Crow Looked at Me
100

Love is a beautiful thing.

I know I'm tossing out 100s left and right these days but I think that giving this album anything less would be a disservice to Phil Elverum's grief. This is a man mourning his late wife in the best way he knows how: through song. His vocals are raw, the instrumentals are stripped back, and the lyrics aren't too esoteric or hard to understand, they're simple and gut punch you every word he says with just how raw they are. He says it exactly as he ... read more

Jeff Buckley - Grace
100

Grace, Jeff Buckley! I'm listening to this album for exactly two reasons: one, I have a pill to take at midnight and this album is just short enough for me to get it done before then because I am getting my ass straight to bed right after, and two, I need closure on the mystery of who the fuck wrote Hallelujah. Was it this guy? I don't know, we're going to find out when we get there. Buckley immediately smacks me in the face with the absolute cinema that is the opener, Mojo Pin. ... read more

Car Seat Headrest - Twin Fantasy (Mirror to Mirror)
95

Week two of my album trade with @Rolymongone and @thekitchenfloor, and we have Roly's suggestion, Car Seat Headrest's "Twin Fantasy (Mirror To Mirror)". I've heard some of the remaster, "Face to Face", and all I really know about this version is the purportedly abysmal recording quality is has, which I've heard is either unlistenable or has a really great charm to it, so I'll have to see. One thing I have to say already is that the quality here ... read more

honeydip - Another Sunny Day
97

Fourth album today and Jesus, is it a powerhouse. We start immediately after whatever P.J. was with "Summer's Gone", a beautiful shoegaze track akin to a louder version of what you'd find in Deathconsciousness and Clinging to a Scheme, the guitar here is beautiful, it's powerful and it rings in your ears as the vocals crawl underneath along with the killer beat, it's so easy to feel and the bass here is phenomenal. Our second track, Evening Calm starts out anything ... read more

Angine de Poitrine - Vol.II

More jam band music, yum! After absolutely eating up Phish's "Junta", the DMB's "Before These Crowded Streets" and Bull of Heaven's phenomenal "Self Traitor, I Do Bring the Spider Love" I'm quite enthusiastic to listen to more jam music, and this certainly does not disappoint. Angine de Poitrine has got a certain twang to their rock, it's really bouncy and every pluck and strum thwips around with an unusual breed of enthusiasm. The rhythms ... read more

Kalai - Six Strings and The Rainy Day Man
95

Happy birthday to me, yesterday! Here we have a quite obscure album in Kalai's "Six Strings and the Rainy Day Man", I actually had to add it to this site; I know about this because my mom actually knew this guy in high school, he went and played at someone's birthday once, he was in her grade or something, I don't remember exactly what she said. . He was born in Hawaii and then moved into my hometown, I'm not doxxing myself today so you aren't getting any more ... read more

Natural Snow Buildings... Neutral Milk Hotel...

Happy 2:00 PM on a Monday to myself and myself only as this review likely won't get out until evening or maybe even Wednesday as tomorrow is my birthday and if I don't get through this 2 and a half hour beast today there's no way in hell I'm making a dent tomorrow; that's right, we're listening to Natural Snow Buildings' monstrosity of a two disc LP "The Winter Ray". Often regarded as the best work of ... read more

Labi Siffre - Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying

"I don't need religion to tell me what to do. I know I should love you."

Labi Siffre's classic folk pop album "Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying" is one that I've been meaning to listen to for over a week now ever since @thekitchenfloor reviewed it and has been gushing about it ever since, and I just haven't been in the mood for it until today. Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" put me in the mood for some soul-ly music and this just so ... read more

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
96

Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" is my first real dip into the world of soul music, and it certainly lives up to the immense praise that it receives from literally everywhere. From the sound of it, Soul is a sort of subset of jazz and R&B, the latter of which being a genre I know very little about, and it all originated in a lot of African American communities as a primary form of expression a while back. The feel of this album is very fun, it's super upbeat. ... read more

toe - For Long Tomorrow
96

Math Rock is a genre that I've been thinking about looking into for a while, since hearing Slint's "Spiderland" I've been interested in taking a closer look at it, and this seems to be one of the cornerstone albums for the genre. Everything about this album has this strange feel to it, right down to its cover: a screenshot of a large factory assembly line for making lamps, but... something is... weird. Some of the lamps look more like umbrellas, there are these weird ... read more

Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets

Am I right-side up or upside down?

Part two of listening to bands that my dad likes but doesn't talk about! As I mentioned in my review of Spiritualized's masterpiece, "Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space", today is Mormon general conference, so I'm going to try and grind out as many reviews as I can in the next few hours so I can clean up my clogged as fuck browser tabs that are filled with all of the albums I need to review. Without further ado, Dave ... read more

Spiritualized - Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm really tired

Today is Mormon General Conference, and I'm an atheist living in a family of Mormons, so I'm going to get a hell of a lot done over the next, like 8 hours! As per all of my reviews I'm going to start rambling about parts of this album I like as it goes along while simultaneously trying to make it sound like I've already listened to the whole thing, but all theatrics and asinine humor-filled size-bloating introductions aside, ... read more

CHASING COCAINE TO THE BACKROOMS!!!!

In the all-consuming dredge of a music reviewer attempting to find something he's in the mood to listen to at any given moment, I was doomscrolling the miles deep pit of random albums on this website and in my feeble search stumbled upon this, which had an interesting looking cover so I decided to check it out. After looking at the high ratings and the intriguing enough "Sophisti-Pop" genre I decided to give Destroyer's ... read more

高中正義 [Masayoshi Takanaka] - THE RAINBOW GOBLINS
97

Joy, whimsy, gleeful storytelling and some absolutely killer jazzy instrumentals all tied up in this quaint little tale about a gang of rainbow goblins on a quest to devour color. The instrumentals are an absolute joy here, they're so peppy and perky, it just makes a smile appear on your face whenever the happy little electric guitar comes flying in. Some of the vocals are heavily electronic, and it reminded me of Miracle Musical, which likely took some inspiration from this. The way the ... read more

Lafayette up singing about everyone dying

So this album is something I've had my toes dipped into for a little while. I listened to and absolutely loved the quick paced and lyrically incredible "Nothing is Safe", was scared away by He Dead and shied away from this project for a couple months. However, I was thinking about Nothing is Safe and how weird and strange I thought He Dead was and I decided to back into this thing with some apprehension and the knowledge that it is weird ... read more

Kill Bill: The Rapper - RAMONA

Triple album swap part 2! As I explained in my review of VOLCANIC BIRD ENEMY AND THE VOICED CONCERN, I'm doing a little album swap with a few of my fellow music reviewers. For the second and final album of this week I have Kill Bill's mixtape "Ramona".

It's pretty good. The aggressive vocals over this lo-fi sound is a really interesting juxtaposition. The vocals feel a little annoying at times, though, and the style gets repetitive as the album goes on; it definitely ... read more

TODAY I GAVE YOU A CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH!!!!! 🗣️🔥🔥🔥

I'm on a discord server with two fellow music people, one being the ever present @thekitchenfloor and the other I don't believe has an AOTY account yet but goes by #1 RAMONA Glazer: and we've decided to do a little three way album swap; the first album I'm listening to is Lil Ugly Mane's "VOLCANIC BIRD ENEMY AND THE VOICED CONCERN". This album does wonders at creating an ethereal dreamscape of ... read more

Taylor Swift - folklore

This is kinda like a heterosexual version of Wishbone

Ahh, Taylor Swift. The artist with both remarkably highly rated albums and remarkably low rated albums. I decided to give her music an actual fair shake after hating everything I've heard from her on the radio, so here goes! This is the second album I've listened to today, April 1st, and the fact that I do enjoy this album is not a joke, mind you.
One of the reasons I've never really taken a look at Taylor's ... read more

Slint - Spiderland
94

Happy April Fools! This review is not, in fact, a joke.
Slint's "Spiderland" is... mostly spoken word post-rock, as far as I understand it. Going right into the album I was pleasantly surprised by the interesting storytelling and the way that the guitar was done, I looked into what the time signature for "Breadcrumb Trail" is and I was shocked to see that it's mostly in 7/4 with some shifting other times mixed in, a really uncommon time that made the song really ... read more
