This feels like the punk equivalent of coloring inside the lines. Has its moments, but leaves something to be desired on the vocal and originality fronts.
Equal parts devastating and catchy, Gojira's "From Mars to Sirius" really struck a chord with me, a near dormant one that yearns for the proggy metal sound this album provides in spades. In particular, the songs "Flying Whales" and "Global Warming" hit this perfect balance of hard-hitting and infectious, and I can't get enough of it.
Also, there is a whale on the cover, 10/10
That Kendrick jumpscare got me πππ
This was a valiant effort from the two least trustful trap stars out there, kinda overstays its welcome but at the same time never became offensively boring or comatose. The high energy moments ("Like That" and "Type Shit" for instance) are plentiful enough for me to be satisfied. It's frontloaded, but consistent enough for what it is.
Fuck it, I've been deliberating long enough on what to rate this album, and I can't go any lower than a perfect 100.
I got my first whiff of "Since I Left You" when I randomly stumbled upon the song "Frontier Psychiatrist" on YouTube a while back. I didn't know what to make of it at first. Keep in mind this was in my sheltered "my parents only listened to their stuff and the radio so that's what I listened to" phase of music listening. It was just so outside of my ... read more
Didn't vibe with this unfortunately, there were some interesting parts of instrumentation but I couldn't get emotionally invested in it. I enjoyed the second half more than the first, for what it's worth, but most of it blended together into indie mush. Most definitely a skill issue on my end.
That said, I did enjoy "Crown of Love", "Wake Up", and "In the Backseat" a good amount, I just wish that I could like more of this but oh well.
I might give it another ... read more
Need more listens to unpack this thing, it isn't the most complex rap album in the world but it radiates intrigue, and also has some excellent high points that act as precursors to many horror-centric ideas explored by later releases. Very funny and over-the-top vocal inflections that rarely overstay their welcome, but at times can seem a bit much. It's also one of those projects that's pretty frontloaded, and peaks pretty early into the tracklist, with subsequent songs not being as well-mixed ... read more
Not as good as "Superunknown" imo, but there are still plenty of standout moments.
Fuck it, yeah this thing has moments where you can tell this isn't LCD's best work, but I still found myself enjoying pretty much every song on here. The lows might be the lowest, although still not bad by any means, but the highs are still there for anyone to enjoy. I guess I stan these guys too much lol, I should eventually do actual reviews for their other albums and get my thoughts out there. Until then, "american dream" concludes the notorious Soundsystem's spectacular run in a ... read more
JESUS CHRIST I NEED TO BROWSE NEW RELEASES MORE OFTEN, WHAT THE FUCK?
To anyone reading this review: "distance from reality" is one of the most underrated cloud rap projects I've ever heard. I can totally see this being a certified classic, given enough people check it out. This thing goes incredibly hard and never lets up in terms of quality and pacing. Some really interesting sample usage, it kinda reminds me of Cities Aviv at points but extra punchy and wrapped in this wonderfully ... read more
Holy. Fucking. Shit. (40000)
What a wild ride of an album. "Deathconsciousness" had that AOTY-hype for me that's been built up ever since joining the site, with many people calling it one of the best shoe-drone-gaze things to ever exist. And its high all-time rating does little to dissuade this notion. Because of this reputation, I put off listening to it, until now. I mean, how could it live up to the monumental hype?
It did.
Let me start by stating how devastating this album ... read more
Really ethereal and dreamy stuff here, it's goth rock done to a beautifully high magnitude.
this album taught me not to be an idiot, 10/10
(seriously i've never listened to these guys before, that was fucking divine holy shit)
An absolute scattershot of ideas, some working very well, while others are left feeling malnourished and underdeveloped. It's hard to appreciate the more contemplative punk/hardcore moments on here (Split Me Open, I Got Heaven, I Don't Know You) when they're paired with other moments of uncohesive bouts of screaming (Ok? Ok! Ok? Ok!), they really should have just picked a lane and ran with it. It feels like clashing ideas fighting for attention, but that being said, there's enough good material ... read more
