(Edit: 67->79) I can't deny how much I enjoyed this thing on relisten. It's been around two years since fully giving "REAL RAW!" a shot, and I definitely underestimated the amount of quality here back then. It's short relative to the amount of songs, but honestly that just kinda cuts the filler out and gives us rapid fire ideas - most of which still continue to work for me. I would prefer if JELEEL! did longer songs, or at the very least extended a few by, like, ... read more
I know it's a 99 and that sucks and I suck but PLEASE JUST GIVE ME ONE MORE LISTEN it'll go up the next time I hear it I promise (maybe) (fingers crossed) (holy shit this was peak and a half)
Phenomenal. Love how this thing sounds, those guitars pair EXTREMELY WELL with the jazz rap and soul chops, and overall lend "Egotrip" a unique, fresh sound built upon old foundations. Give it a couple weeks and this shit's gonna grow on me even more, I PROMISE
Nubby's Number Factory ahh cover
Shoutout to my dad, who got me into these guys with their last single like a month or two ago. He said they'd be right up my alley, and boy howdy how correct he was. Whimsical and immediate in groove, it's no suprise for me to say that this has serious potential to grow on me. Give it a few weeks and this could be in my top 5 of the year, only time will tell I guess.
Doseone on here sounds like if Bruiser Wolf and Dax had a bastard love child, change my mind
(at least some of the beasts are good ig)
(idk in another world I could appreciate his weird, raspier vocals, but they just don't do anything for me in practice)
Okay look, you're probably gonna look at this score and my last one for Arcade Fire's new album, and think that I'm going on some "albums-that-I'm-gonna-probably-hate-and-rate-low" tour of sorts. I was never a fan of these guys, but I genuinely, GENUINELY wanted to give them and modern AF an honest shot. I like when my cynical, stupid ass is proven wrong about something, and even then I'm not going into an album wanting to hate it. Expect to hate maybe, but I ... read more
God, this was boring. Like, REALLY BORING. As in, I don't think you can comprehend how absolutely soul-crushingly dull and devoid of substance this thing really was, you know I'm not the biggest Funeral fan out there, but at least it had some memorable songs and was like, really influential when it came out and stuff. And I never listened to their modern stuff, and I wasn't expecting much to be honest, but WOW. I mean, wow. How boring, do-nothing can you get when listening to ... read more
Uhh, wow. Damn, "Doves" really did a number on Billy's mental health, huh?
He's really outdoing horror directors here on this one, man. These words are being written after my second listen of "GOLLIWOG", and it's just amazing to see how truly terrifying and yet absolutely natural this record feels. Unsettling at countless points, jagged in production, bordering on just spoken word at a few points. The beats here are barely holding themselves together - maybe ... read more
holy fuck this is exactly what i needed
"Wayne’s World Dies in an Explosion" is the best song name ever btw
In most respects, "Pirouette" feels like a more accessible version of Model/Actriz's sound when directly compared to their debut record (minus "Ring Road" I guess, jesus christ that song), but it's abundantly clear that move was for the better. The hooks on here are extremely catchy and expressive, I especially liked the ending part on "Vespers" where it's like "In all the lights, it's yOO00O0o0o0o" definitely an A+ moment. And overall ... read more
Some weird hooks, inconsistencies and problematic moments (the outdated R-slur elephant in the room) here and there keep this from being one of my favorite El-P projects, but there's still plenty to love. I liked the proto RTJ song, Danny Brown's feature was great also. But is it just me, or does "Drones Over BKLYN" just NOT agree with anyone else's ears??!? the intermittent piano lick never seems to fit smoothly over the beat, the chorus is too jagged and it's ... read more
Damn, Will's vocals didn't resonate with me for most of this record. Like they're reverbed out HARD, and lacks the crunch on par with his performances on Twin Fantasy. And while the instrumentals are nice, for the most part, the buildups undergone (especially during the longer cuts) don't amount to much above what you'd see on a typical rock opera. All in all, it feels unimpressive at first, but maybe another listen could change my mind.
yeah this sucks, sure it sounds like THEY had fun but that didn't exactly translate to personal enjoyment at all.
Flume should work for me on paper but I never really enjoyed his style that much, and peggy just goes through the motions over his wonky beats. And listen, I really enjoy jpegmafia and the music he makes, even if that special edition of his most recent record wasn't great I still loved the original a ton. But man, even I can sense his descent into his own pretentious ... read more
seven writers came up with:
Doggy style feels alright
Missionary, forty calories burned for me (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
Scissoring, I find that interesting
Spooning is always soothing (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
and three producers made it sound like shit π₯π₯π₯
Does this record have catchy hooks? Yeah, I guess so. Does the production go hard at times? Again, yeah, I'll give it that. On paper, "Bring on the Comets" should be a home run. But what this record completely lacks is SOUL. Mashing glam tropes with dancey-punk music? Peanut butter and jelly. Conceptually, it doesn't bother me one bit. But when you experience 12 of these songs in sequence, what winds up happening is you begin to feel tired of it quickly. Nodding your head a ... read more
SPENDIN ALL DAY AT THE NAIL SALAWWNNN π π π
What an excellent showing from Viagra Boys! Explosive in the ways you want, and simultaneously unpredictable and weird in places you would never expect. At times, this record feels like if "Gorillaz" sounded more like their actual band name, and abducted James Murphy for a couple of the more synthier cuts. Wonderfully bizarre and head-scratching as always!
This is some beautiful goddamn shit right here
Sounding WAYYYY more explicitly shoegaze compared to "Urban Hymns", the Verve's debut record "A Storm in Heaven" exudes this absolutely magical dreamlike aura that never fails to suck me in completely. As much as I enjoyed their more britpop-leaning stuff they would later tap into, I gotta profess my love for this style of theirs in particular for making me consistently dissociate with reality. Couldn't tell if I was ... read more
Imagine instead of the frown or whatever the fuck thom york peppermint patty is doing with his mid ass, he could be making shit like this
Edit: HOLY SHIT I ENJOYED THIS MORE THAN I THOUGHT
sorry guys, ive been playing nubby's number factory and tbh i don't have the energy for another big review, just know that the best 3 albums of the year all came out TODAY FOR SOME REASON and this could ALSO somehow grow on me. what the fuck
