I'm gonna need more listens to fully appreciate this, but on first impression I really enjoyed the first half and thought the second half dragged its feet a bit too much. A successful deviation from his chaotic approach on Odelay - certainly more focused and vibey, but falls a tad short of the highs present on his previous record. Still, Beck finds himself in a creative enough bag to carry this new sound of his very well, and I'm excited to see how his later work reflects this shift in focus.

What an excellent collection of deceptively well-made emo, it's almost sickening (in like a cool way).

There's so much variety here to satisfy almost anyone, from the more laid back and contemplative meditations to the more bombastic celebrations of sound, you'd be hard-pressed to find an album this year balancing such a diverse palette.
