Starts off feeling like a Brazil-influenced lounge-based project with a playful mood and the best of intentions (this could very easily be B-Sides from early Capsule) but sadly any time it strays from this strict parameter it feels kinda shoddy, like "Cartoons", for instance. They cover Nirvana's "Smells like teen spirit" (this is how I found this record, in a bossa nova compilation album) and it's an extremely well done cover, managing to capture every original ... read more
It's honest, spacey and nicely produced, even if a little plain. I was a little disappointed to find the rest of the album was much more low-key than the "Yes, and?" lead single, which is a shame because it makes use of Ariana's voice so well while being an incredibly refreshing and modern take on an old school feeling instrumental.
I think my biggest problem is how effortless the lyrics are. It just feels as though no effort was put into things like rhyming and eloquence ... read more

South Italian linguistic continuum go brrr
this album is very needed in a time where the erasure of southern Italian culture feels incredibly enforced through stigma in media and society. instead of 'reeling it in'or 'speaking proper italian 'la niña' doubles down and makes a beautiful statement as a neapolitan woman
This album is what "Because the Internet" thought it sounded like
..and that's no compliment to By the time I get to Phoenix. It's a record almost entirely devoid of structure that leans into being sheer noise, often too discordant and dissonant to be that listenable. All of its highlights (Knees, Top Picks for You) are entirely because there's some form of vision. When it comes together to form an actual something, the something isn't so bad.
It ain't for ... read more
It's a little unclear what the vision is right now and the album is clearly made for people who are fans on Childish Gambino and the world that surrounds him but I am obsessed with the insane high quality of every running minute of the record, even if at times it is disjointed.
Glover has a lot he wants to say and he says it all pretty darn well. Can't wait for the movie to come out
40 ounces to freedom? more like 22 tracks to boredom!!
..just kidding π it's not that bad. It serves as a fantastic reggae-esque ska soundtrack and I'll probably be putting this on when I have friends around because of that - it just means that as an experience it really isn't that substantial. I guess that's the point of this record though, you shouldn't think too hard on it and ruin your high.
Holy fuck this record drags on though
Again, it got a little better executed and I start appreciate the fact they know their limits and stop at EPs.
But seeing as this exact sound is all the project is for, maybe Good Kid should wrap up? I really don't see how anyone, from the audience to the band members themselves wants to keep this going. Good run, but let's call it a day

...how is this the same person that published 'alone in a crowd'
hearing the 'no easy way to end a circle' lyric killed me to hear. same with 'death ray, golden age' (from another kryph single). there are a lot of little excerpts in Oliver Tree's newer music that reference this early stuff and it makes me really sad. the industry murdered him.

Look, I like this album, okay?
Let's get one thing out of the way:
The worst part about this record is that as it ages, it becomes clearer that this sloppy hypercartoon shitposting persona wasn't a one-off idea of an album cycle poorly executed but just what the Oliver Tree brand looks like in the 2020s as the business 'adapts to the times'.
I like that it leans into Oliver's cartoons character more, I like the fake yeehaw cowboy aesthetic of the album cycle and I ... read more
I mean.. it's *alright*..
Yeah, this sounds like Green Day if it had less points of creative direction, which is exactly what this record is: more of that "good ol' stuff". There is nothing special or new about this and it's enough. No one part of this record really stand out, I can only point to highlights.
Not an album I see myself listening to again but it'll be nice to have in my shuffle play.

From the very start of their careers, Smash Mouth had that gleaming, 'laid-back dudes' charisma that made them so appealing all the way into the modern age as a band adored beyond just meme culture.
The amount of subtle humour that is sprinkled into genuine messages and stories of people who annoy the narrator of Smash Mouth is just perfect; it's enough to make me chuckle but stay in the sonic moment like ... read more
"Americana" is very much an album of its time, with its two-dimensional lyrical storytelling, shout-along anthemic choruses and slight tendency to repeat itself. Its unexpected sense of indulgence, however, is refreshing and pleasant.
At my college campus in the film/music department there is a technician's office and he has posters all over the walls with dumb nerdy jokes.
One stood out to me:
'Humanity has the ability to synthesise and reproduce nearly any imaginable noise and yet they still make the active choice to listen to Björk'
So, I gave Björk a listen.

If you can make me cry smile and headbang, speak to my heart, be a record that I've already loved through bad times and wrap it all up in this beautiful, spacey jazzy teen angst rock then you have no choice but to be among my favourite albums of all time.

I really, really enjoyed this storytelling and holy shit do the VAs bring it alive! I got so invested in the story of Cazilor and events like Domita I would love to hear more from this world for sure.

Keeping you on the edge of your seat for 87 thrilling minutes, with interesting sporadic moments of ambient dialogue, powerful highly communicative instrumentation that at points never seems to relent and a cool story about I place I assumed was always a shithole - Coney Island.
Audio cinema. Blimey.
I fell into Oliver Tree a couple months after this album released when all the dust from its sheer mishandling settled, so I learned to like it as it was in that state and appreciated the Deluxe album when it came out, although I thought most of the songs there were mediocre.
This album was remarkable for me: something I had never heard before but still so nostalgic in its influence and style. There is a definite allure around the character of Oliver Tree in this era and his somewhat ... read more
