what if instead of death grips they were called life grips and they made songs about being nice and having fun with your friends

while i still find the 2nd half of this album to be relatively weak, the more intense and skeletal sound of this album has really grown on me
Perfectly straddles the line between calmness and intensity. Everytime this album takes a big swing it feels earned and intentional. Flood almost parallels nature in the sense that it is neither malevolent nor benevolent, but rather trudges forward with full power, ambivalent to the whims of the listener.
The silence after this ended is the loudest silence I've ever heard
It's only been about 5 months since I first listened to this thing, but I've somehow managed to relisten to it enough to make it one of my most listened to albums of all time. Even still, I struggle to find words to explain just how incredible this album is. It's just a constant, never-ending downward spiral of vitriol and hedonism that seemingly never bottoms out, relentlessly assaulting you at every single turn. Despite this, Bottomless Pit is easily one of the most exciting ... read more

More like Year of the DOG, because this album came out in 2018, which was the Year of the DOG! Yuk yuk yuk!

Still extremely strange even after multiple listens, but I would be lying if I said that I didn't find this album enticing. I initially thought that the two sides of this album didn't mesh well, but now I see them as perfect sister albums, not in spite of their differences, but because of them. With the first side of the album, tracks have scattered song structures, bizarre instrumentals, and cryptic lyrics. However, the second half of the album sees songs becoming slightly more ... read more
i get that its literally called music but maybe 30 songs is a few too many musics
Really enjoyable instrumental album. I understand that this was mainly just a way to satiate people waiting for Jenny Death, but I can only imagine how good this album could have been in MC Ride were on it. The instrumentals actually do sound they were originally intended to be rapped over, so with a lack of vocals I found this kind of becoming background music. Still, it's some really nice background music.
An ambitious concept that's executed wonderfully. Not every moment on this album hits, however, when this album DOES hit it hits me HARD. I think I really emotionally connected with this.
Definitely an interesting experience to say the least. The first half of this album is by far the best, with You Might Think He Loves You through This Is Violence Now being a particularly fantastic run of tracks. As for the second half, it honestly kind of feels like a different album. The vibe of the album shifts very abruptly, which feels somewhat confusing, and not entirely in a good way. I also wish that MC RIde was way more present on the second half, as the songs there are mostly ... read more
I considered putting this off untl I started my Tyler discog dive but decided to just go for it considering its only 30 minutes long (and i was still awake when it happened to come out in my time zone). I'm not crazy about Tyler (at least, I'm not crazy about the stuff I've heard from him) but I was optimistic going into this album, and yeah I rlly enjoyed it. There's no deeper theme or message from what I can tell, but that's kind of the whole point of this album, and ... read more

WOW this grew on me. Over the course of many listens I think I've finally grown accustomed to the sound of this album and I'm honestly in love with it. Everything from the industrial sounding percussion to the blues-inspired grooves help to create this really dark and grungy atmosphere, and there honestly isn't a single weak song here. Just a consistently great album.
though its somewhat easy to tell that they were still trying to 100% nail down their sound, and the second half of this album is considerably weaker than the first half, i still think it's a fantastic debut with great writing, great production, and a great concept. Mercurial Wold, Secrets, You Lose, and Chaeri are easy highlights that im gonna be returning to alot.
(93 -> 97) straight up back to back perfect songs i mean come on bro
Coming off of Live Rope, I had pretty high expectations for Birthing. While this certainly isn't what I expected the album to be like, I believe the album delivered, even if it isn't in the way I thought it would.
So, this is definitely one of the weirdest albums Swans has ever made. I honestly haven't been this befuddled by a first listen to a Swans album since Soundtracks for the Blind. However, after many more listens, this album has started making more sense to me in its ... read more
