This grew on me even more than when I last remember hearing it. Firstly I have to say that the first 5 track run is SO GOOD! Literal chef's kiss for the first 5 tracks oh my GOSH! Secondly, several of my all-time favorite Coldplay songs turn up on this record. Songs like The Scientist, Clocks, In My Place, and Amsterdam hit so hard. I for the most part love all of the songs here. The only song that is a bit forgettable for me is A Whisper. I wish that one day Coldplay may return to a sound ... read more
It's pretty aight. A couple songs I enjoyed, but everything else was just ok. Nothing bad so the score isn't gonna be that low, but a lot of these songs just lived in the shadows of the initial single. I did like On My Soul quite a bit and the two final tracks were pretty solid, but everything else I could take it or leave it.
Still consistently serving bangers alongside Joey's production which continues to be adventurous. Some of these synths are giving me some early Kanye vibes like with the latter half of "how does it feel to be young". That song may be short, but it allows for such a nice transition into "bustamove" that it helps make it a memorable moment regardless of how brief it is. Did I mention they sampled my GOAT PORTER!!!?? I promise I'm not biased towards that song because ... read more
Instrumental goes nuts, Thundercat's humming harmonies are so sweet on the ears, and hearing Mac go off rapping over this so nonchalantly is so surreal and incredible to hear. This almost in a way feels like Thundercat giving Mac the floor one final time and sending it out on such a happy and fun note. Absolutely gorgeous!
Heard this a while back, but it felt like a good excuse to re-listen when I'd heard that this album would be coming to streaming services for its 25th anniversary. Feels nice to listen to it on something other than a YouTube video. And how well does it hold up 25 years later exactly? Well I wasn't exactly born at the time this dropped and I only found myself listening to it for the first time in January of this year. Almost an entire year later and I can still definitively slap a ... read more
Love me some trance! It's futuristic sounding and yet it also feels so nostalgic nowadays since you don't hear it as often. Porter nails this sound down fairly well on this fun EP! Some parts have a certain soundfont that I can't put my finger on. I don't know what the exact origin is, but hearing something like the bass lines and drums around the middle of Particle Arts for example is just reminding me of some fire Terraria Calamity Mod music. Anyways all the songs here and ... read more
Still in love with this Madeon guy's music. I'm really anticipating the new album so it only felt right to go back through his albums. Madeon had a big splash debut in the EDM scene during the mid 2010s alongside another notable artist known as Porter Robinson. I bring him up because, aside from him being one of my favorite artists, these two have gone through quite the similar career trajectory. They started off fairly young making EDM music, grew in popularity and made some big ... read more
Already had this rated, but after giving the Planisphere EP a review it only felt right to also give a review to this. I will say I'm not just throwing a review after listening to that EP because I did actually re-listen to this banger of an album once again. Gave me a good opportunity to give track ratings. When this album excels it is absolutely INSANE! When this album doesn't excel it's when the production isn't as boundary pushing or when the features on the project kill ... read more
Christ this EP slaps like crazy. Can definitely tell this comes from Justice around their prime era which is the Cross album. This is only a year after that and at times feels full of just as much fire as that album does. The track I would especially point out is the final part. Holy shit those drums, those synth hits, but ESPECIALLY those bit-crushed guitar solos... yeah that all comes together to make an orgasmic electro house song. Not to downplay all the other tracks though because ... read more
Was looking back through the singles chart of this year and was reminded of this song although I don't remember it being released as a single. Anyways though this has to be up there in terms of my favorite Mac Miller tracks. The lyrics paint such an incredible story about life and death through what Mac is reading in the newspaper, or as the song describes, the funny papers. Someone drunk driving off a bridge to their wedding song, a baby boy being born. Mac puts in his own two cents on ... read more
A really fun and enjoyable midwest emo project! Y'know I was wondering at times why the lyrics sounded like they were a blend of English and Japanese and yet I couldn't make out any distinct words whatsoever. Then I come to find out that it's written in some made-up language that's based on those languages which I found really neat. The vocals hit a nice emo tone that doesn't feel too angsty and instead goes more melodic which I love! Pretty consistent listen and quite ... read more
As it gets further towards the end of the year we reach a time where the weather is getting colder, the days are getting shorter, and yet there's still plenty of beauty that shines through in the season. That's what this album feels like. Something that's keeping the light on even in the dark. It doesn't feel like being in the depths of that darkness, but rather having distance and perspective from those times. Looking at Sage's life and his struggles through a vignette ... read more
If this albums quality is to follow what these one, two, three, four, five, now SIX... singles have been showing then this might be my favorite OPN project and a late album of the year contender. These teasers thus far show some truly mind-blowing ambient and progressive electronic music. I'm finna close my eyes and imagine liminal spaces beyond the likes of which man has ever seen before
With the recent news of the biopic I had to give this a re-listen. An absolutely timeless record and deserving of such high praise! I'd say the final track was the weakest moment, but there really wasn't a bad moment on this album whatsoever. I was just expecting more for a finale and it fell more towards the background to me than any other track. Some people point to The Girl Is Mine as the weakest, but that one has grown on me a decent bit over my listens and I appreciate the ... read more
I might give this one a re-listen cause I've had a long night of music listening and am a little tired, but this was really good. Some nice arrangements and overall a nice orchestral and multi-lingual performance. I really like the dramatics of a lot of this, but I mean it is very classical in parts so you really get a lot of that. The only track I'd say I wasn't really that into was Porcelana and that mainly comes down to the auto-tuned vocal guest and their repetitive lines ... read more
I'm an absolute sucker for this shit. Some songs towards the middle didn't stick as much as others, but that like... dream pop/jangle pop/shoegaze bag is in contention with my favorite genre stuff to listen to so this was still pretty enjoyable. I enjoyed some of the big highlights from her previous album more, but still an absolute win for Hatchie right here. She's sounding so close to a modern-day Cocteau Twins on this project and I'm loving it. Especially on the single ... read more
Such an oddball record and at times quite a jarring listen, but an intriguing one at that. This was such a blast to listen to and you can tell his state of sobriety is shining through and he's just glad to be here making dope as fuck music. Danny is really showing his ball knowledge and general love for modern music through this stacked list of features. Some features hit harder than others and some I wish could've done more. The Frost Children track was alright, but I guess I was ... read more
I need to give a proper re-listen, but I know it's roughly around a 7/10 from the rating I have it at elsewhere. That being said I'm rating this on here to point to one of the most notable and honestly of the most beautiful tracks on here that has helped push me through what has been a very prolonged and active depression over this past... year basically. The song in question being La Noche. I need to hear more Navy Blue, but from what I've heard from him this is his best song. ... read more
An unfortunate mixed bag of an album. I listened to this after getting the song "I Exist I Exist I Exist" recommended to me on YouTube out of the blue. That song is definitely a highlight on here and aside from that I'd also say the track 4-6 run is really nice as well. That's... all I really got my enjoyment out of. I mean I did also like the brief title track intro which sets a pretty interesting tone for the record. Every other song on here unfortunately falls through due ... read more
Very beautiful project. The vocals being as raw and in your face as they are on the project can at times be to its detriment, but this was still an emotional rollercoaster (no pun intended cause I legit just did a double-take at the album cover and name shortly after I wrote this sentence and facepalmed). The emotional peaks for me were definitely stronger in the first half with stuff like Grace Cathedral Park and Mistress, but simultaneously the weaker moments were around there too with Down ... read more
