Neither a "get back" garage-roots move nor a calculated attempt to win over the Lollapalooza crowd with the Big Guitar Formula, Monster is a deeply felt, thematically coherent, consistently invigorating challenge to "evolve or die," with all the courage of its convictions.
I could be biased since I purchased this CD at a thrift store, but the album cover looks like something you'll find at a thrift store.
I've never heard an album that suits it's colour as much as this one, this album sounds so orange.
It's an album that doesn't try too hard considering what it had to live up to after R.E.M's previous massive commercial success. It's full of slowish/mid tempo songs that fit together aesthetically for the most part but is divided by stand out memorable moments and less challenging songs.

"Monster" comes as a strange album to me and many others, often occupying the bargain bin back in the 90s because of the drastic change in sound from the band's utterly massive 1992 effort "Automatic For The People". That album is a damn masterpiece, universal acclaim and sales that ascend to heaven and back and it's "Monster" that suffered in the long run from the success of the prior album.
