As he says himself in “Westside Story” about today’s rap scene, “The West coast never fell off.” Game’s here to put it back on top.

Pitchfork
Dr. Dre's latest protégé boasts not only an impressive set of producers and guests for this highly anticipated throwback to early 90s West Coast gangsta rap, but also a hoarse, guttural vocal style that commands more presence than precedessor 50 Cent.

SPIN
Almost lives up to the hype.

Entertainment Weekly
Production biggies have brought some truly tasty heat rockets to the table, nearly rendering Game's well-studied, adaptable flow an afterthought.
80
PopMatters
He’s a self-conscious, malicious, nihilistic gangsta rapper with a heart and lyrical content.

AllMusic

The most remarkable aspect of the Game is how he can be such a blatant product of gangsta rap and leave a mark so fast.

80
NME
It's The Game's candour that is his unbridled strength.

AllHipHop
The gang’s all here and Game’s probably going to be banging on wax for years to come.

HipHopDX

The guy hasn’t even been rhyming 2 years, and it isn’t like he that good to warrant the instant superstardom. Still, that doesn’t change how good this album is.

Uncut
A mostly rich and involving experience.

This has all been done before. Repeatedly. Gone is the sense of exhilaration I felt when I first listened to The Chronic. That excitement has been replaced by the images of countless suburbanites emulating today's big hip-hop artist, be it Snoop or Biggie or Puffy or Pac or 50.

60
Rolling Stone

Documentary just seems like a Dre/50 Cent side project -- something to tide you over until 50's new album in March but not quite as strong as the Lloyd Banks disc from last year.

NOW Magazine

Now his press sheet is calling him "the most significant West Coast gangsta rapper since Snoop." That's a hard call to make, especially since it's hard to tell who The Game is, cuz he keeps getting killed on his own shit by the A-list producers and cameos.

In case you're ever feeling suicidal and want to end it all in a creative way, why don't you give a whirl at one of the most tried-and-true death wishes you could ever partake in: The Game's Name-Drop-And-Drink! For every time The Game mentions another person by their name, nickname, or artist name, you take a shot. That's the whole game, there are no other rules, no one outside of Ozzy Osborne will make it past the How We Do. Plus, the soundtrack to your demise is pretty solid, too - Kanye ... read more

Yesterday I was looking through upcoming releases and seeing who was dropping on New Music Friday, I was looking to mark down albums to check out and I saw that Compton rapper The Game was meant to be dropping a new album (which hasn't even dropped yet) but upon realising that I haven't actually ever heard an album by The Game I decided to change that and give his debut album 'The Documentary' a listen, not only that but I felt compelled to review it. I've known about The Game for a few years ... read more
