Coldplay - All I Can Think About Is You
60

60 - Surprisingly good

It's still Coldplay drenched in an electronic overcoat while the reverb rains down but it is an enormous leap from their previous singles for this EP, the question is who even releases singles for an EP? sigh, and they've never sounded more like Radiohead mimics then here, right now.

Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork
99

Because of the times and the state of rock music as a whole, this album stands as one of the only examples of how to make a rock album in the 21st century, absolutely essential and QOTSA at their fucking best.

My AOTY pick for 2013.

Nosaj Thing - All Points Back To U (feat. Steve Spacek)
79

Starts off sounding like something out of a bladerunner movie but quickly evolves into this megalopolis of sound.

Steve Spacek's vocals benefit the track, and overall this is a beautiful blend of IDM, Techno, minimalism and that little bit of magic which makes Nosaj Thing well Nosaj Thing.

Nosaj Thing - Parallels
50

First; Kid Cudi's “The Man on the Moon.”
Kendrick Lamar flowed over Nosaj’s “Cloud 10”
And Chance the Rapper on “Paranoia” (the second-half)

That alone deserves your attention, so explore his previous works and get excited for this release right here!

Update:
Sigh average at best

Chelsea Wolfe - 16 Psyche
NR

Chelsea continues to do no wrong.

Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly & James McAlister - Planetarium
70

A gluttony of sounds, and somehow the vocals remain the most appealing soundscape.
Once Black Energy plays, you're taken across to a much more ethereal listen.
Before it was tiring, a chore to listen to this album, a sort of scatterbrain experience.
But the songs themselves are wonderous, and as tiresome as they are as a collective these sounds are masterfully crafted
And perhaps that's the best way to create an album regarding the inexhaustible epic which is outer space and all her planets. ... read more

Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell
55

AT first, I was happy to accept that this album lived on the outskirts of my musical tastes, as its a common feeling I've had with Sufjan's music, despite truly enjoying his opinions and his approach to creating music. The story regarding his mother, haunting since I still remember reading his interview about this album.

Having listened to Carrie & Lowell live, I can't quite accept that sentiment anymore. So it leads me to believe that the mixing and studio polish of this album is what ... read more

What Moon Things - What Moon Things
78

A little hidden gem of an album it's one of those records, you find and devour and love and never expect to speak about with another person ever.

Björk - Vulnicura
86

The most accessible Bjork album.

Lana Del Rey - Paradise
80

One album and one ep, have created everything that is Lana Del Rey.
And it seems highly unlikely that she will ever return to this place.
Paradise is a good ep, and Born to Die a good album, its a shame that due to her later releases this ep and that album are shunned for coming from such a commercially successful artist yet such a terrible artist, a common contradiction in the pop landscape.

BROCKHAMPTON - SATURATION
79

BABY BOY BOY, a 17 track album that flows seemlessly and fuck these brockhampton boys hit you in pack formation.

I feel Odd Future could have learnt from these guys, these voices are all uniquely textured, and its no problem mixing sexual preferences as shown here, believe it or not hip hop artists, uniqueness is wanted.

The production definitely could be better, but that's understandable for a debut especially one that blows their mixtape out of the water.

Update: this album has definitely ... read more

Drake - If You're Reading This It's Too Late
86

LOW-KEY the best Drake release don't @ me.

Jungle is the best I've heard Drake, this surprise release was the best reaffirmation for Champagnepapi and the high point of Drake's career, it's all down hill from here to me, looking back. "Know Yourself" will never sound as good as it did the first time I heard it and the summer that followed it; and that statement follows the first 4 tracks as a whole, the middle half of this record which alone is enough for a record on its own, is ... read more

Corbin - Leaving

SZA - Ctrl
80

79:
Much like Drake's More Life, this album has an unsurprisingly good sound, great features and as a whole is a well-developed collection of sound.

That being said, this album doesn't really put her in the realm of FKA Twigs as far as quality goes and after a three-year wait, I don't really see this as a brilliant album, its good nothing more than that though.

Update to 80:
This album has grown largely due to its cultural impact, the sincerity and honesty found on this record has outshone ... read more

Daigo Hanada - Ichiru
82

There is a lot to love here and very little to complain about. It's 30 minutes of beautifully strung together piano pieces that bring up comparisons to Nils Frahm, at least in my mind.

This is completely worth the listen, and keeping an eye out for anything Daigo releases in the future.

Update: I honestly cannot find any flaws in this creation.
It should be said though that some of the reworks released for this album are even more stunning than the pieces found on this album, so perhaps ... read more

Kelly Lee Owens - Kelly Lee Owens
72

This album loses its form towards the tail-end of the album.

It seems a common trend among artists mixing IDM,Ambient & Techno music with vocally driven tracks as seen here.

Much like Arca, Kelly's vocals benefit her tracks tremendously and the songs without vocals suffer for it.

This style of structuring an album has got to go, it has ruined too many albums with the potential of being AOTY's its a shame to see and hear, maybe leave the experimentation for the EP's

"Yeah getting rid of that, of course that was said before he moved on. It was a huge departure from his sound and definitely not hip-hop but his next release would show it was so much more."

"Hey hey, not quite, I don't think. Though Turnstile & BADBADNOTGOOD's EP "New Heart Designs" definitely had something there but less hip-hop and more Jazz fusion or HEALTH's "DISCO4 :: PART II" which definitely got there on certain tracks."

"Agree 100% I think it has to do with their vocal performances both artists do the sing-talking thing in their verses, punctuate their songs with falsetto’s and love to stack manipulated vocals a top one another!"
On The Killers - Hot Fuss
"Yeah that’s the point, let me be less succinct, there was a very real push for indie rock to be the next great effector of sound, best seen/known with the Pitchfork-core tag. The reverse of this is that bands with more a traditional rock sound ended up being lampooned despite releasing their most noteworthy records in this time while let’s say in 2005 (when this DEBUT album came out) Franz Ferdinand, Animal Collective, modest mouse, Iron and wine, THE VERVE, feist all got glowing reviews in jarring contrast to this record. There was a deliberate and unnatural critic bombing for albums like this. Not to say that like The Funeral isn’t a wonderful record just that for this debut record to get spitroasted by critics was alarmingly disproportionate to other indie rock record receptions."

""In Search Of" by NERD? if yes then of course! And "The Grey Album" is the reason this record was made so definitely aware and consider those better records that preceded this album. My sentiment is towards the critical reception of this album despite how brilliant and influential it was: It's a record that was a HUGE gateway for hip-hop kids to listen to rock and for rock kids to listen to hip-hop far bigger than the records you mentioned but it isn't acknowledged as such. You really have to look no further than Numb/Encore to understand that."
