By far the saddest of the mixtape trilogy, and probably the most cohesive of the three albums due to the song transitions and the generally shorter song runtimes. I think I might actually take this as the best of the three, although Balloons almost certainly wins when it comes to singles.
Favourite Song: D.D
Best: Montreal, Outside, XO / The Host, Initiation. Same Old Song, The Fall, Next, Echoes Of Silence
Worst: N/A
Thursday may not reach the heights of the demented atmosphere that House of Balloons has, but it still certainly carries on the menacing yet tantalising early Weeknd sound that made his trilogy of mixtapes so cultishly brilliant.
Favourite Song: Lonely Star
Best: Life of the Party, Thursday, The Zone, The Birds Pt.1+2, Gone, Rolling Stone
Worst: Heaven or Las Vegas
A really fun and rewarding British rock album which has stood the test of time better than many of its contemporaries, though the first and last songs are ultimately the ones worth listening to tenfold over the rest. It's a serene, sweet start and an epic, groovy ending.
Favourite Song: I Am the Resurrection
Best: I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs the Drums, Don't Stop, Bye Bye Bad Man, Made of Stone, Shoot You Down, This Is the One
Worst: Elizabeth My Dear
A precursor to grunge which excites and fascinates. There's something ridiculously creepy about Poledo and utterly hilarious about the blunt, screaming cover of Just Like Heaven.
Favourite Song: Sludgefeast
Best: Little Fury Things, Kracked, In a Jar, Poledo, Just Like Heaven
Worst: Lose
80's punk set into raw overdrive.
Favourite Song: I Don't Wanna Hear It
Best: Filler, Seeing Red, Screaming At a Wall, Minor Threat, 12XU, In My Eyes
Worst: Small Man, Big Mouth
A trip back to the 2000's, for the nostalgic better and for the cringey worse. Lesbian power pop/pop punk is always a fun genre though, so I'm not complaining, I wanted a simple and fun 2000's revival album and I got just that... just with a few too many stale trap beats along the way.
Favourite Song: Obsessed
Best: We Don't Talk About It, Kiss Her Goodbye, Make It Stop!, I Like U, Hate Me
Worst: Torn In Two
Blaring pop bangers for the ages. Slayyyter is certainly a name to keep note of in the pop girly scene.
Favourite Song: My Body
Best: Miss Belladonna, Dramatic, My Body, Memories Of You, Rhinestone Heart, Erotic Electronic, Purrr, Girl Like Me, Tear Me Open, Out Of Time
Worst: Plastic
Haunting yet soft, but for an album which utilises a plethora of pop sounds, I found it most wrenching when it came to the most acoustic tracks, such as the closer. Epilogue really got to me the most out of the crushing track list. Grief is always horrible, and this album captures a story of grief and trauma very well.
Favourite Song: Epilogue
Best: Prologue, Kettering, Sylvia, Atrophy, Bear, Two, Wake
Worst: Thirteen
A little disjointed and sometimes scattered, but still largely fun and resonating. A new sound for the future of pop curated by Miss Remover.
Favourite Song: kodak moment
Best: goldfish, your clothes, misplace, pretender, search party, movies for guys, how to lie, champ, let's go home
Worst: buzzcut, daisy
Simple and fun Swedish underground pop rock. Also the first album I've added to this site :)
Favourite Song: Perfect Day Elise
Best: Don't Stop Loving Me, I Will Get Over You, Miss Wanted, St Denise, I Believe, Freeway, Move On Boy, If It Makes You Feel, Lee Ann, A Window's Grief
Worst: Run Away
Solid beginnings, or in Rebecca Black's case: Saturday.
I dived into Let Her Burn after having Sugar Water Cyanide in my head for the best part of a month, and it's good! Rebecca Black wears her influences on her sleeve, but she still finds a way to craft her own style, which hybridises pretty much every trendy modern pop subgenre to make something that could potentially be a little more unique production wise, but regardless makes for a fun and at times quite endearing time. But I ... read more
One of the easiest album listens that I've ever come across. Aja exhibits smoothness and relaxation which is otherwise very difficult to create for a lot of bands.
Favourite Song: Peg
Best: Black Cow, Aja, Deacon Blues, Home At Last, I Got The News
Worst: Josie
The Mac Miller estate continues to redefine how best to shape an artist's work posthumously. Mac's lyrics are crushingly human, the production is tastefully handled, and the whole thing is yet another hit for one of hip hop's great modern innovators.
Favourite Song: DJ's Chord Organ
Best: Do You Have A Destination?, 5 Dollar Pony Rides, Friendly Hallucinations, Mrs. Deborah Downer, Stoned, Funny Papers, Manakins, Rick's Piano
Worst: Transformations
The perfect soundtrack to listen to whilst wearing a hoodie and some fuck you flip flops. Genuinely though, one of the most inventive and unique film scores to ever exist, and a perfect accompaniment to one of my favourite films of all time.
Favourite Song: Hand Covers Bruise
Best: In Motion, A Familiar Taste, It Catches up With You, Intriguing Possibilities, Painted Sun in Abstract, 3:14 Every Night, Pieces Form the Whole, Carbon Prevails, Eventually We Find Our Way, Penetration, In The ... read more
Harrowing, eerie, and powerful in its completely unique hip hop approach.
Favourite Song: Uneven Compromise
Best: N/A
Worst: The bit at the end where my ears implode and my brain bleeds profusely
Cute! Very cute.
Favourite Song: Last Train At 25' O Clock
Best: For Lovers, HIROGARU-NAIMDA, Out On Sunny Sunday, Tomorrow Comes I Will, Rainy Tapestry, Behind The Moon Shadow
Worst: Words Of Love
A blazing return to form for twigs, resulting in her most compelling LP to date. At times I'm in her beautiful, sultry yet deranged world where emotions run rife, and at other times I feel like I'm at a nightclub in a late 90's spy film. There's a perfect balance of bangers to ballads which makes it a better listen for me than MAGDALENE, and there's way more memorability than LP1. I was concerned for how this could've turned out because I wasn't huge on ... read more
I love when someone loves music. Therefore, I love Nujabes. No one has ever done lo-fi like this guy, and no other hip hop artist can make me feel as at ease. A really lovely album, and a very unique one too.
Favourite Song: Luv(sic) (Pt. 1)
Best: Luv(sic), Pt. 2, 3, 4, 5, Grand Finale
Worst: N/A
When the only words you can make out throughout the entire album are 'heaven' and 'Las Vegas', you know you're in for a good time.
Serene and heavenly, and a classic for a reason, but what the actual fuck is this woman saying.
Favourite Song: Heaven or Las Vegas
Best: Cherry-Coloured Funk, Pitch the Baby, Iceblink Luck, Fifty-Fifty Clown, Wolf in the Breast, Frou-Frou Foxes in Mudsummer Fires
Worst: Fotzepolitic
