Merzbow - Venereology
27

I remember I used to show people woodpecker no.1 as a joke, so I figured a different record would have a different sound or style, especially since this cover looks pretty sick. The answer I got was a mixed bag, since there seems to be some pronounced horror or torture feel to the random ass noises. This sounds like if femur breaker was extended out to fifty minutes. Under the harsh noise aspect to the walls of sounds occasionally you hear something that stands out of the mix, for instance ... read more

Lil Ugly Mane - MISTA THUG ISOLATION
91

First listen: Ehh I don't really get the praise around this, there's some clever lines and storytelling, but its not consistent and the production seems a bit aged also I feel like he........

Second Listen: I SKEETED ON HER CHURCH DRESS

Lil Ugly Mane makes an album in which most songs I pulled a complete 180 on. The production sounds fantastic and makes the entire listen extremely enjoyable when coupled with Lil Ugly Mane's incredible swagger and his unique voice. While the subject matter is ... read more

System of a Down - Toxicity

Original score: 87

I told myself I liked this for a long time, and I still do but I've come to the realization that I disliked a decent number of the songs on this record. Truly an album which I fell to the pressure of other scores.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven!
95

When my prof didn't show up, what did I do to take my mind off my complete failure of the class?
I decided to go on a 90 minute trip through the intricate, layered, chaotic, mysterious and overall beautiful highly recommended Godspeed You! Black Emperor album. It was the same day that Danny Brown's new album dropped and the same day I listened to Drive It Like It's Stolen, and I thought that there was just about no way I would sit through another album, especially one over an hour. However, I ... read more

Danny Brown - uknowhatimsayin¿
74

I guess you can say I've been handing out sevens to albums I've been hyping up to be nines....

Danny Brown follows up his masterpiece and my personal favorite album of all time Atrocity Exhibition with an overall decent project. However, for Danny Brown's standards, I was somewhat disappointed. The one thing I can see everyone agreeing with is that the production is insanely clean and VERY good. Q-Tip, Paul White, Flylo and Peggy in my initial listen saved this album for me. On second listens ... read more

Injury Reserve - HPNGC
NR

Peggy stole the damn show
After being disappointing from his very small input on Injury Reserve's self titled project, he delivers an extremely powerful and enjoyable verse with great aggression and overall flow. Other than that I love the low key beat on the song, it fits well with everyone. I didn't enjoy Richie's thing at the first listens but it eventually did grow on me, but honestly since he was doing what he was doing instead of having an actual verse it should have been cut down a bit. ... read more

BROCKHAMPTON - GINGER
74

An album which reassured many, albeit does somewhat fall off.

Well... as I was saying before the last tracks kinda weren't living up to my expectations after loving the hell out of the first seven tracks. There were spots of interesting ideas like Joba's verse on BIG BOY and the verse from the apparent new member Victor Roberts on his self titled track. I don't think anything is very bad, I just don't think I'll return to these last few tracks. With that out of the way I'm overall pretty ... read more

Oh - Oh, An Album
62

Yanno I was planning on listening to Denzel's Imperial but then I realized I forgot that there was a more hype album being released today. Wow... I actually decently enjoyed most of this. Front couple of tracks and back couple of tracks were pretty good. Obviously, there were some problems... but it was much better than what I've heard before. You did overall a pretty good job with this!

Fav Tracks: 01_left, 02_only, this song has 30 beats (and counting), float, time

BROCKHAMPTON - NO HALO
NR

Wow.. really impressed with this one. This feels so much genuine and one of their more better emotional tracks which honestly usually I don't care for. The guitar with the chorus and everyone's verse is really refreshing brings out so much more. Everyone has an outstanding verse with very emotionally appealing themes, Matt's is probably my favorite. I really wasn't expecting that feature to help out with the chorus but overall the chorus put together brought much to the table and really pulled ... read more

JPEGMAFIA & Kenny Beats - Puff Daddy
NR

My favorite track from last year. Literally the most perfect banger of all time. Everything about the production is just insane, Kenny knocks it out of the park, and it becomes so fitting with an incredible performance from Peggy. The energy makes me come back to it almost every day.

JPEGMAFIA - Jesus Forgive Me, I Am A Thot
NR

Edit- I actually do really enjoy the the autotune high notes Peggy sings, overall the track grew on me so much. There's a lot going on in this two minute track which really sets it pretty high.

Wtf theres a new album coming?
Seemed completely different from veteran in many different aspects. Hopefully this grows on me more. Can't say I was the biggest fan of him singing though. Liked the aggression in some places and the beat.

Denzel Curry - ZUU
65

This album is the definition of being for the most part front loaded.

After being bored from the first listen with exception to songs like Wish and Ricky the front couple of songs and the last track P.A.T grew on me. Something about this just seems off however. There seems to be holes everywhere. Occasionally hooks are the strong point with often odd and seemingly pointless verses, and other times I hate the hooks. I can respect the production but it doesn't really help with my overall push ... read more

half•alive - Now, Not Yet
81

I was thoroughly impressed by Half Alive's 3 Ep which I thought was a solid start for this new and coming Indie Rock/Pop band. I also was very impressed at the five singles that were released for this project. I was generally coming into this with high expectations. Did they meet them?

Definitely

This project saw them evolving their sound to a more clear and rounded mold which I was overall very impressed with. The best part of it in my opinion is the very clean production and sound which ... read more

Various Artists - Album of the Year (User's Music Compilation)
48

Woke up to this and I guess I can say...
Thanks for making my morning like 10x better

Thoroughly I actually enjoyed this. Even though almost half the songs were bad. I was expecting lots of just meme rapping which I got but I actually enjoyed most of the instrumental tracks... with a few exceptions *cough* oh *cough*. Japanese Glitter and Stein were honestly my favorites.

BROCKHAMPTON - IF YOU PRAY RIGHT
NR

Edit- Ok I'm a dumbass I only listened to the youtube version lol
-4 for what the fuck was that Outro? That transition was ok but then I realized theres almost a minute and a a half of this off singing from Kevin and a bunch of samples that I just overall didn't want to listen to.

This was the single I was looking for. My hype hasn't died.

Loved the beat and the trombone. Honestly I was kinda worried for Joba's verse but his was actually my favorite along with Dom. There was a solid hook ... read more

Vienna Teng - Aims
NR

I haven't heard this whole album but I really wanted to talk about one of my favorite songs from a few years ago, which I just happened to hear today for the first time in forever. The Hymn of Acxiom is a chamber pop track that is solely driven by Teng's incredible voice and vocal harmonies. The song is both beautiful and then haunting in context with the lyrics. They depict a future controlled by the analytics that personalize your social feed that draws a person in from what they like. In the ... read more

Björk - Homogenic
96

Original Score- 56

Holy hell this thing grew on me so much. I was dead set on what I thought was just overall boring. Maybe it was because this is my first Björk album, but originally I thought the very clean production was the only thing going for it as I thought Björk's vocals didn't really fit and were quite odd. On the third listen I was completely entranced at the beauty of well.... everything. Björk's vocals fit like a glove in the production which seems simplistic but ... read more

Run The Jewels - Run The Jewels 2
87

Original Score: 95
Longtime Score: 80

Edit: I was wrong to an extent

First Review: The one problem that I found in second and third listens was the production from EI-P. Everything in general blew me away in the first listen. However, the production just became more cheap/generic electronic sounding as time went on. I think this was exemplified in some hooks like on Lie, Cheat, Steal and No Respect. I don't think it becomes unlistenable, I just feel like it could have been better with the ... read more

my bloody valentine - loveless
95

Edit: Just kidding. What you want is a bit of a dud in the tracklist and soon drags on a bit. Other than that no complaints.

Yeah finally I have a perfect score. There can't be any words for what I experienced during my first listen. I can't really find anything at all wrong with the sound of this album which never fails to both hug and melt my brain. While the lyrics aren't as crazy, I feel like they don't matter as much due to the overwhelming noise. Instead the vocals almost act as a minor ... read more

Madvillain - Madvillainy
96

Original Score: 99
Edit- Some of the tracks I didn't enjoy as much lessened the experience on more listens. I still really love this project however.

Probably one of the most unique hip-hop albums out there. Literally everything about this album is airtight, but also is fun and exciting. The lack of hooks on this record serves as a strong benefit, as DOOM creates interesting stories and themes with his top notch wordplay, which is on full display in songs like Meat Grinder and All Caps. ... read more
