Probably one of the best hip-hop debut album of all-time. This album has a flawless track-list and is one of the few albums that has genuinely funny skits. The skits on this album add so much personality and charm to an already stacked track-list and tie everything in this project together so well. You could genuinely say any song off of this album is your favorite Ye track of all-time and I wouldn't bat an eye, it's just such an impressive project.
A really well put-together, bright, lush album. A definite step up from "Cherry Bomb", and was what really made the general public realize that Tyler had more to him than just edgy shock lyrics.
It's fine, obviously a super influential album, but quality-wise, Ye's released way better projects, and I'd probably consider this Ye's weakest album pre 2019. It's not horrible by any means but it's just not like really great either. Definitely has a couple of cool songs but it's just not a very memorable project as a whole package.
One of the LPs that got me into listening to albums front to back in general. This album holds a very special place in my heart, I was going through really messy feelings I had for someone and this album helped me through those, feeling like a mirror for the complex messy emotions that come with love and heartbreak. I'm glad that this was one of my first listens, it's a very concise album but still manages to convey a lot of meaning in it's story.
While it's not my favorite project from Ye, this album is some serious quality, and I can see why it's a favorite for many. The production on this LP is some of the most lush, orchestral and grandiose I've heard on a hip-hop record, and the features on this album are absolutely killer. With projects like this dropping, it's no wonder Ye's early catalogue is so beloved to many.
Great album with some absolutely killer pop grooves. It's a really solid album and I see why it gets so much praise, just think it's a tad overrated.
To get the positives out of the way, this album has a really all over the place sound, Tyler does a good job pushing the boundries from what you'd expect from him or even hip-hop in general.
A few songs have really interesting experimental production, and almost provide looks into the future for some of the jazz/neo-soul inspired production on Tyler's later LPs
My favorite song from the album (and honestly one of my favorite tyler songs in general) would probably have to be ... read more
It's just really bad and really long honestly. Yonkers and She are really good but outside of those two songs, I cant think of any other positives off this LP.
This album is like a nearly unbearable slog to listen to, and lacks nearly all of the charm or polish any of tyler's other projects have.
Has a few misses but it's mostly made up for with a really nice tracklist to just turn your brain off and vibe to. While I slightly prefer Carti's self-titled mixtape, I can see why this one gets the love it does, especially given it's sheer influence on the future of a ton of hip-hop's sound.
Honestly the production on this mix-tape hard carries, but I still really enjoy it! just some relaxing psychedelic trap with some really nice production, kudos to Pierre and Harry for the production on this.
A phenomenal orchestral soundtrack served with one of Nintendo's best ever games.
Soundtrack fits the game perfectly, as whenever I listen to this soundtrack, it absolutely feels like I'm peacefully drifting through space.
It's definitely a solid album, but I think Noname leans too much into the sleepy quiet effortless delivery she had on Telefone too much, which ends up making some of the tracks a little samey and repetitive, some of the vocals also feel a little too sensual and whisper-like which makes me almost feel like I'm listening to an ASMR video.
That being said, the production on this album is some great stuff. The smooth jazz instrumentals make this album an absolute treat to listen to. Even ... read more
Really fucking good but pretty overrated, too many misses on the tracklist for me to rate this any higher. A lot of the songs drag on for way too long, but devil in a new dress and runaway are some of the best songs Ye's ever released
EDIT: 80 > 75
The lowlights on this album are a bit worse to me now, opinion hasn't really drastically changed on this album though.
Just another great addition to the incredibly impressive run that tyler has had post flower boy. This album has some of the best songs in tyler's catalogue, with very few weak points in it's tracklist.
Hellfire is a colorful, chaotic, one of a kind masterpiece and is the album that really made me fall in love with black midi.
With entrancing chord progressions, and some the best constructed jazz-rock songs you'll hear, what ISN'T there to gush over with this album?
One of the most satisfying listens i've had honestly, this album is just perfect and will definitely be one of my all-time favorites for years to come.
Edit: It's really good but realistically when i look at ... read more
Fun nerdy album that'll always hold a special place in my heart even if i dont revisit it as much anymore.
