Unoriginal and uninspired. There’s some catchy tracks but overall wasn’t anything to write home about
So this thing has been overhyped
Before I complain about anything, the song quality has genuinely increased. Jack had some decent growth here from last year's “Come Home The Kids Miss You.” That being said it’s not much of a feat when what he came off of was frankly pretty abhorrent. What we have here is the same album as the last but with soul samples and backpack raps. He dropped the corny bars about “I like to dictate things, Kim Jong” and “sweet sweet ... read more
I’ve been struggling how or what to write about this album for a while now. This was the first or second album that I listened to all the way through back when it came out. I’ve spent a lot of time with this record and I’ve changed my opinion multiple times over the years on it.
Kendrick mostly keeps the extremely consistent streak going here. It’s a bit of a pre cursor for what was to come with a change of sound from the more jazz and funk influences seen on TPAB and ... read more
I love this album so much. This compilation is technically quote on quote “b-sides.” Though it feels like anything but low effort. Some songs on here are higher quality than some of the material some the same era imo. Songs like 05 and 08 are probably both in my top 10 Kendrick. For a compilation tape that was thrown together it feels very intentionality cohesive and the subject matter is impactful. You can really tell how hungry he was creatively, and as a writer. Umm that skit on ... read more
Yes… it’s a 10 but im not reviewing it bc theres nothing i can add to the thousands upon thousands of reviews already. I have nothing to say that hasn’t been said already :)
Ahh yes the cold takes start here
gkmc is a modern classic, it’s a story from Kendrick’s youth and upbringing, regarding the people he was associating himself with, and homage to Compton, as well as themes of drugs, alcohol, and sex. So many iconic songs came out of this album, “Backseat Freestyle”, “Money Trees”, “SAMIDOT”, and the title track just to name a few. Once again, there is a large improvement on production, the writing, the ... read more
Kendrick starts to really take shape here
Kind of a short one today. I’ve really found a new appreciation for this record. The production is much less distracting (and better) than the last and his storytelling and ability has improved leaps and bounds. The subject matter gets a lot more serious and complex and the narrative for Kendrick’s foreseeable future begins here. It’s not without flaw, a few sub par tracks but no more awful ones.
Man this one is rough.
Firstly, it’s aged soooo poorly. If this album is bad for any one reason, it’s that. Both the production and the rapping. Kendrick has a few standout verses and glimpses into what was to come for him but it doesn’t save this as a body of work. You can tell he was no where near comfortable with his own singing voice yet, and there are some extremely corny bars. It’s a sleepy listen. Oh, and Michael Jordan is basically unlistenable. That all being ... read more
Wow I didn’t expect this to do what it did, I’m gonna do some revisits but I am shocked in the best way possible
An absolutely dazzling and a vastly hypnotic wonder.
On Portisheads debut and magnum opus, they deliver a stunning sonic journey. Beth Gibbons kills it vocally as per usual. The chords are dark and blue and the production as a whole is gritty and cold. Truly the genre defining record of trip hop in its entirety. One of the most addictive and stylistic musical landscapes I’ve heard in recent memory. I wish there was a bit more of a solid direction they were trying to take that you could ... read more
“the record” is front-loaded with singles. I was pretty excited for this album because of those singles. When it comes down to the actual release it’s bland and mellow-dramatic. There’s a few powerful standouts in the tracklist, like one of the singles, “$20”, as well as “Satanist” and “Anti-Curse. Some of the production is pretty on the slower songs. Nothing offensively bad, but just because it’s not all that bad doesn’t make it ... read more
Randomly stubbled back upon this one this morning and thought I needed to knock it out cause it’s great.
There’s not too much to say here honestly, one of best hip hop albums of 2018. Daytona is what get when you pair peak Pusha and peak Kanye production. The tracks sound amazing. It’s just cut and dry a very solid album with great writing and some creative ideas. The sampling is pretty unique of this album and this time in Kanye’s career. It’s an awfully short ... read more
This is probably one of the easiest tens I’ll give out.
A stunning wonderland of sonic rapture.
I’m gonna try to keep it shorter because I tend to write real long most of the time and frankly, I just don’t think people are interested in reading all dat lmao.
Ah yes, here it is. Mine, as well as many others favorite Radiohead album. Hot take, I know. But it’s not for no reason. The musical atmosphere it captures is the stuff of legends. The writing and ... read more
Scary noises oooooooh
I by no means have the broadest metal knowledge in the slightest, I know a few of the classics and I keep my ears open to anything new that sounds nice. “93696” falls into that second category. I’ve been watching Liturgy from a distance since the singles for this album, one of which being the tittle track which is what really caught my attention. That one’s probably still handily my favorite of the album.
There are sooo many genuinely beautiful ... read more
More generic than the name Ben (yes I know my name is Blake). I could dove a little deeper into this review but I just don’t want to. This one is poopy.
Super creative aesthetics on the production front, it just struggles so badly when it comes to anything standout (performance wise) or interesting past a first listen. Don has been on a decline since the debut and this only drove the knife deeper.
