Travis Scott’s ASTROWORLD is full of great production, high-profile features, and high energy performances. While definitely better than Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight, it doesn’t compare to Rodeo.
STOP TRYING TO BE GOD is easily one of Trav’s best songs, it features James Blake, Kid Cudi and Stevie Wonder playing the harmonica. It’s one of Trav’s most compelling songs.
SICK MODE is an absolute banger, where Travis and Drake basically cycle through these high ... read more
Overall, it’s basically a worse version of Rodeo, worse beats, worse features, worse songwriting. There’s some great performances but then there’s some where I can’t even recall the chorus to the song when I just listened to it.
way back is easily a top 10 Trav song, it has probably the best beat switch of his career and his rapping is amazing too.
the ends has a great feature from Andre3000. Also a great chorus and verses from Trav.
pick up the phone, the beat is ... read more
The Forever Story was the first time I heard of JID. I remember my first listen vividly, it blew my mind. At that time I’d never heard someone flow like JID. JID’s flow is really only comparable to Andre3000 and Mos Def. Every song on here JID just gilds right over the instrumental.
JID is also an incredible songwriter, which is shown on songs like Sistanem, where he shows his emotional depth and paints vivid pictures of personal struggles. JID can sing too, on Kody Blu 31 JID ... read more
Honestly for the most part this is the only Travis Scott project I go back to anymore. This album is completely different and more creative to all of his other albums, this album is artsy. The production is done perfectly and sometimes can feel harsh or straight up beautiful. 90210 is one of the best hip hop songs ever created, and it’s a masterclass in production. On Scott’s following albums the songwriting takes a backseat while the atmosphere is what carries the songs. On Rodeo, ... read more
Honestly all 4 songs on here are basically tied.
Lift You Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven is the perfect example of how music is art. Without any real lyrics side from the spoken part, it conveys its message and emotions perfectly. It’s so grand and beautiful to the point where it truly feels larger than life and a gift from heaven itself. Each song is around 20 minutes but they are broken into movements, like a symphony; ever-changing sections of the songs that seamlessly blend ... read more
Mac Miller has changed my life in ways I never expected. There’s something about the way he combines his lyrics, his voice, and his production that feels like he’s speaking directly to me. He is able to invoke more emotion within me than any other musician. He literally changed my perspective of life with songs like 2009. He is one of my favorite artists ever. I’m a big fan of his discography, Swimming being one of my favorite albums ever and Faces not too far behind. I heard ... read more
Ah yes, triple platinum with no features.
On 2014 Forest Hills Drive, Cole takes a more personal approach. Cole tackles every aspect of this album by himself, trying to make it as personal as possible. It’s weird because this album is very relatable even though I don’t relate to this very much. Even though Cole’s singing isn’t very good for the most part, it shows the lengths Cole would go before getting an actual singer to feature. Cole clearly really wanted to make ... read more
I've had this review ready for two weeks, and I sincerely attempted to find some flaw to make this album not a 10. I can’t. This album was executed absolutely perfectly; the beats are some of the most insane beats I’ve ever heard. JPEGMAFIA, or “Peggy” isn’t like other rappers; he does everything himself: he writes, raps, produces, and mixes everything. Making him arguably the greatest artist of his generation, right next to Kendrick. The best way to put it is ... read more
Often cited for “saving a generation”, Man On The Moon is of the most influential and important albums to come out in the 21st century. Kid Cudi didn’t just release an album he quite literally invented a whole new genre, and a generation of a music. Blending introspection with innovated production, Cudi found a way to express himself like none other.
The production can only really be described by saying “it sounds like the universe” if that makes any ... read more
Illmatic is, in the simplest terms, the “Dark Side of The Moon” of hip hop. Illmatic I’ve the years has proven to be completely timeless. Like Dark Side of The Moon, it’s untouchable, it’s been praised to the status that it feels almost mythical. It’s larger than life, it’s more than an album, it’s a moment in history. It’s a blueprint of what rappers should aspire to be.
On Illmatic, Nas consistently drops bar after bar with these ... read more
It didn’t click at first. When I first listened to this album my thoughts was something along the lines of “well, I’m never listening to that again”. But here I am. It sounds pretentious but, you have to be in a different state of mind to understand this album. to Be Kind isn’t for a passive listening experience or casual enjoyment. This album is uncompromising, it grasps the listener and tests them for 2 hours straight. Swans was not trying to make a hit, they are ... read more
So yeah, I don’t know if this was supposed to be a joke, I sincerely hope it was. It’s just so uninspired and cringe. I’m not even gonna rank the songs cause they don’t deserve to be ranked, HOWEVER, OPPY DAY might be the funniest song ever created but I can’t give it anything higher than bad because it is a bad song and I unfortunately can’t tell if he’s joking or not.
Perfect song, I love the Thundercat bass and Mac’s amazing delivery.
MF DOOM and Madlib’s Madvillainy is a absolute masterpiece. The most creative hip-hop album of all time, and one of if not the most creative albums ever made. This albums takes the approach of both Madlib and DOOM being villains, and teaming up together. Madlib’s production is absolutely incredible and mind blowing, these beats are weird, raw, gritty, wacky, hypnotizing and beautiful all at the same time. I mean, Madlib used 17 samples to make America’s Most Blunted. ... read more
First off, this is NOT trap. LUCKI’s (formerly Lucki Eck$) debut mixtape, Alternative Trap, came out when he was 17, recorded at 16. the production is INCREDIBLE. It sounds similar to LIVE.LOVE.A$AP, but in the way that LLA is raw, this is beautiful. This album’s production is borderline cinematic and dreamlike. Beats like Count on Me are straight-up masterpieces. LUCKI’s raps with this drowsy flow and confidence. Sometimes he even has conscious lines and messages, such as the ... read more
While I prefer Swimming, this is in my top 3 Mac projects. Circles was recorded right before Mac died, you can really see his state of mind at that time period in this album. Circles made to be the sequel to Swimming (Swimming in Circles, get it?) and you can definitely tell. I wouldn’t call this album rap although there is some rapping sprinkled in here. It’s really sad to see that this album is so good, and Mac didn’t even finish it (thank you Jon Brion). On Circles Mac ... read more
On Mac Miller’s 5th album he enters musical genius territory. Mac has changed from his previous work. I love his other albums, but this is different. Swimming impacted me more than any piece of music ever. This might be the most important album to me. I actually think I wouldn’t be the same person if it wasn’t for this album. I’m seriously getting goosebumps while typing this. Swimming helped me process something that I didn’t even know I needed to. This album made ... read more
Is this album as emotionally complex as Watching Movies or Faces? No. But it makes up for it because this album absolutely BANGS. The production is actually awesome, it’s laired with jazz instruments, background vocals, pianos and some crazy drums. Arguably Mac’s best produced album yet. Lyrically, it’s not a as deep (for the most part), he’s more braggadocios. His flows are amazing with constant flow changes to match the ever-changing beats. He’s grown so much ... read more
This is Mac at his darkest point in his life. When this mixtape came out Mac was convinced that he wasn’t going to be around much longer. This mixtape is incredible. Not only is this the best mixtape ever, it’s one of the best project ever. The production is amazing and the sampling is mind blowing. Often the beats sounds very dusty are almost bare bones, with a lot of organs driven melodies, which allows Mac to lay all of this ideas down. The lyrics are incredibly dark, reflecting ... read more
