Girlfriends - Girlfriends

This was an album I discovered maybe last month? Anyway I was instantly hooked by the super unique and refreshing take on emo music. Most of the tracks are just straight up looped, with crisp, snappy drums touched with a hint of fuzz playing in tandem with a guitar loop or blooping synths. The vocals , atleast on the tracks that feature vocals, are a bit screamo adjacent but they're subdued down, further back in the mix, so you don't get some of the annoying qualities of that vocal ... read more

Slint - Hippie Chick - tweethan mix
NR

I'm sorry, did we just get a fucking new SLINT SINGLE IN 2024?!

Β₯$ - VULTURES 2

He really made Husband, possibly his worst song ever, and put it on the album twice...

IN A NUTSHELL

Tis' unfinished, poorly mixed, scrap-booky in the worst way possible. Kanye doesn't even do the bare minimum to make this listenable all the way through. Worst album of the year.

SOPHIE - One More Time
NR

This is possibly the only SOPHIE song I'd consider to be genuinely terrible. It takes SOPHIE's classic bold metallic, liquid sound and waters it down into a sullen, boring progression that starts sounding like a 2010s gaming YouTube channel intro, followed by the refrain into a really boring background EDM. Genuinely disappointed.

Camila Cabello - C,XOXO

She trying to be Charli so bad 😭

Camila Cabello's new project is just.. bad. It's very bad. It's a collection of scatterbrained, directionless, uninspired tiktok-core dance-pop with splashes of hyperpop pastiches without any creative edge or flair, resulting in just a sterile, supremely uninteresting album. There's a whole host of problems with this. The writing is vapid with nothing catchy, no interesting melody. I wasn't expecting anything thought provoking from a ... read more

Oathbreaker - Eros|Anteros
58

Maybe I went into this with too high of expectations, but I was unfortunately disappointed by this Oathbreaker album.

It had a lot of creative decisions I don't vibe with and it didn't really have the metal tropes I gravitate towards. Some of my issues with tracks include the vocals kind of swallowing too much of the space on "No Rest For The Weary", the clunky solo in the middle of "Nomads", the softer vocals on "Agartha" just clashing horribly with ... read more

my bloody valentine - loveless
100

The big daddy of shoegaze.

"loveless" is the 1991 sophomore project of renowned shoegaze band My Bloody Valentine (also called mbv) . This album is hugely important for the music scene, since it brought acclaim to the shoegaze genre, being one of pioneers of dense, fuzzy, distorted ,layered guitar driven music and really pushed the genre further in a way no other project has. It's no wonder why newer shoegaze bands often get likened to mbv, "loveless" really set in stone ... read more

Maruja - Knocknarea
93

Was 2023 really the most slept on year for music?

British up-and-comers Maruja give us this gorgeous EP of jazzy, avant garde art rock and post rock that strikes a near perfect balance between melody and cacophony, intricacy and chaos. Despite its short runtime it does give the listener an immersive experience in a dark world with a pretty tight knit narrative. Each track is beautifully layered instrumentally, along with the walls of guitar and drums you would expect from an indie rock band, ... read more

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Fβ™― Aβ™― ∞ [CD Version]
100

One of the most poignant, beautiful and vivid storytelling albums of all time, and it does it with very few words!

My introduction to Godspeed You! Black Emperor wad the highly acclaimed and beloved "Lift Your Skinny Fists.."
During my early listens of the album, I appreciated the beautifully layered and diverse soundscapes that sounded so haunting yet elegant at the same time. It was nice, but outside of the technical capability and the wide array of the instrumentation, I didn't ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - meet the grahams

Ok yeah this is better than Adidon..

Drake - "lol you are short"
Kendrick - "I hope you fucking die"

Kendrick Lamar - euphoria

3 beat switches on a Tuesday is crazy. This ain't as good as Adidon but Drake just got shredded.

Taylor Swift - THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT: THE ANTHOLOGY
NR

"I wanna have straight sex at the gay pride parade"

"We could pick a decade, we wished we could live in instead of this, I'd say the 1830s but without all the racists"

"Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto"

Wasn't her entire appeal her songwriting???

Taylor Swift - THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT
38

The musical equivalent of a white bread.

Taylor Swift's new album sees her make no artistic innovation whatsoever, and is the absolute definition of a snooze fest. The album pretty much falls short on all three fronts of pop music - vocals, production and writing .

The performances on this album do not do justice to Taylor's talent whatsoever. So many of the songs just sound so sleepy and dull. She sounds bored out of her mind while singing this, and the low energy just rings ... read more

Bring Me The Horizon - POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR
100

With their electronic laced, glitchy and heavy nu metal/alt metal album which fuses Linkin Park with DOOM music (fitting that Mick Gordon is producing on this), BMTH make the end of the world sound incredible.

(Will eventually review this in full)

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Infest the Rats' Nest
81

Climate activism in the form of some kickass thrash metal? Hell fucking yeah!
"Infest the Rat's Nest" is one of the best gateways into thrash metal and metal music as a whole as it encapsulates the strengths of the genre. It's full of energy, catchy guitar riffs and fast tempo drumming.
It's not an album that pushes the envelope of the genre further, but it does stand on the shoulders of giants like Metallica to provide an accessible and excellent thrash metal gateway , that has ... read more

Before I start, this rating is not influenced in any way by the Fantano video. I had it's score as a 42 before and the tracks I liked grew on me a bit more, even after watching the video.
Second point before I get into the album, no I will not be separating art from artist, with the reason being the the antisemitism, racism and the misogyny is WITHIN THE ART itself. Lines like "antisemite but still a king", "it's not racism it's a preference" and "my ... read more

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
100

Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory reminds me of everything my teenage self thought was badass about music. From Mike Shinoda's crunching raps to Chester Bennington's incredible vocals that could shift from haunting and hurt to powerful, vicious screams at a moment's notice, and the raw, gritty electronics from Joe Hahn. And as time has gone by, my love and appreciation for this album has grown stronger and stronger.

Fair warning, I'm very biased in favour of this album, but I can't help it. This ... read more

Fugazi - Red Medicine
85

Another great entry into Fugazi's already expansive catalogue of influential and excellent post hardcore. Red Medicine is one of Fugazi's more experimental and creative records. Although it still builds it's foundations within their characteristic sound of noisy punkish post hardcore, it inculcates a variety of experimentations such as the neo psychedelic sound on "By You" , alternate tuning such as on "Latest Disgrace" and short sampled passages as on "Do You Like ... read more

This is alt metal at its finest. The great instrumentals with that wonderful shoegaze fuzz and Chino's vocals are the perfect blend of sultry and manic. Catchy yet brutal and full of energy, this is one of the best songs I have ever heard.
