Childish Gambino - "Awaken, My Love!"
78

Ever since revisiting Redbone, I've been wanting to give this album a try. It's very, very impressive, and changed my outlook on this artist quite a bit. This is by no means perfect, and it is definitely inconsistent, but it has some incredible highs, and only a few low points. California isn't actually that terrible believe it or not.
I'm just saying, if every track was like 1 and 6, then this probably would've been #1 for 2016.

A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders

This album is home to some of the best rap songs out there. Very enjoyable, I don't know what else to say. I guess the album is kind of an exhausting listen the whole way through, but I can't identify why. Also, some of these skits are meh.
Favorites: Award Tour, Sucka N*gga, Midnight, Electric Relaxation, We can get Down, Lyrics to Go
Least favorite: 8 Million Stories, Steve Biko, Oh My God

Nujabes - Modal Soul

This album is fantastic. It's best when it isnt just ambient jazz sampled music, but even the ambient jazz sampled music is great. Feather and luvsic are naturally phenomenal, some of the best songs I've heard ever.
Favorites: Feather, Luv(Sic.) part 3, Eclipse, Horizon, World's End Rhapsody, Flowers
Least favorite: The Sign, Sea of Cloud

Laura Shigihara - Plants Vs. Zombies (Original Video Game Soundtrack)

The perfect soundtrack for a perfect game. I have very fond memories of endlessly playing I zombie and vase breaker, and all those minigames, god those minigames. This game has a perfect charm to it, and this soundtrack is a big reason why it's so charming.
Also, the basslines in these songs are incredible, it surprised me.

De La Soul - Buhloone Mindstate

It's overall a very enjoyable album. It might not have the highs of their debut, but its a stronger project. Besides, the highs here are pretty damn high anyway.
favorites: Breakadawn, Ego Trippin, En Focus, 3 Days Later, I Am I Be, I Be blowin
Least favorite: Long Island Wildin' Patti Dookie, Dave Has a Problem.

Viper - The Hiram Clarke Hustler

lol. And, lmao. The first 2 tracks are seriously incredible, but the album never gets back to that greatness. Overall, this album is best when it's mellow and not using reversed samples.
Favorite: I gots 2 ball, They Want Me Dead Cause of My Hops
Least fav: U Got Ur Gat, Exciting

Maruja - Knocknarea

Very avant-garde, I like it quite a bit.
Favorites: Thunder, Blind Spot
Least favorite: Kakistocracy

Viper - Ready and... Willing

Some of these songs have no business being good. Viper is somehow the worst and best producer ever to walk this earth. Sadly, his production skills are all he's got, but they're undeniably impressive and worth spending time listening to.
I think the greatest thing about this album is that Viper is seemingly not even aware of how talented he is when it comes to making beats. When you hear him rap about such typical topics, and in such a lazy delivery (which somehow compliments the ... read more

MF DOOM - MM..FOOD

Rapp Snitch Knishes alone makes this album a 9.
Nah jokes aside, this is an incredibly fun record. The rapping is naturally fantastic, but the beats really make it for me. They have such a colorful personality, which compliments this album theme perfectly.
Favorites: Rapp Snitch Knishes, Guinnesses, Deep Fried Frenz, Hoe Cakes, Kon Queso,
Least favorite: Beef Rap, Fillet-o-rapper, Gumbo

De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising

This is one inconsistent rap project. The highs are really high, lows are super forgettable. The jazz rap songs on this thing are phenomenal though. The album has a great charm to it too, which made the whole experience pleasant despite me not liking a majority of the songs.
Favorite: The Magic Number, Eye Know, Tread Water, Say No Go, Me Myself and I
Least favorite: Take it Off, De La Orgee, Can U Keep a Secret, Ghetto Thang.

Death Grips - Jenny Death

That electric guitar does wonders.
This is the only DG album I like. And I like it a lot. On GP is one of the best songs I've ever heard. Maybe I should give Exmilitary a shot.
Favorites; On GP, Turned Off, Inanimate Sensation, Why a Bitch Gotta Lie
Least favorite: Pss Pss, Death Grips 2.0

Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies

I finally got around to listening to this thing.
This EP has an incredible first half. Second half is also solid but definitely not as good. The strange distorted acoustic instrumentation always benefited the songs they were present on, and honestly, I wish I heard more of it in other bands.
Favorites: No Excuses, I Stay Away, Nutshell
Least favorite: Whale & Wasp

Operation Ivy - Hectic

Fun EP. Here We Ago is one of the catchiest songs I've heard in a while, it's definitely my favorite on here.

Operation Ivy - Energy
80

I love the energy, I love the occasional grooves (like in Take Warning), I love the bass lines, I love the catchiness. The only issue I have is that quite a lot of songs on here weren't THAT good to me. Otherwise, this is a solid punk album.
Favorites: Take Warning, Sound System, Unity, Bad Town, Freeze up
Least favorite: Gonna find you, Bombshell, Artificial Life

Mac Miller - Faces

What an experience. it's a real comfort ride the whole way through, a good album to put on and chill to. It does drag on, but makes up for it by being strangely easy to just stop midway through. Love this project, Mac Miller is great.
Favorites: Angel Dust, It Just Doesn't Matter, Polo Jeans, Friends, Uber, Rain
least favorite: Malibu, Colors and Shapes, 55, Insomniak.

Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city

Real is my favorite Kendrick Lamar song.
This album is great, though it didn't live up to my expectations. Not like it matters, I still had a good time.
Favorites: Real, Good Kid, m.A.A.d city, Money Trees, Bitch, Don't Kill my vibe
Least favorite: Sherane, Backseat Freestyle.

The Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat

Words can't describe the experience that is The Gift. That song threw me such a curveball. This whole album threw me for a curveball. What a weird experience. The closing track is some guy talking about a woman giving him head for 17 minutes with some really noisy guitars.
Edit: There's something really alluring about Sister Ray. I can't put my finger on it, but something about that song makes me want to come back to it, even though my initial listen was quite exhausting.
For me, that's a ... read more

System of a Down - System of a Down

I dig this a lot. Much better than Toxicity. The songs go hard as fuck, unexpectedly so to be honest. No real bad songs, but some are a bit too ridiculous for me. My only real issue is that I don't see myself revisiting most of these songs.
Favorites: Suggestions, Know, Spiders

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground

This is just... so mellow. I didn't expect this at all. Wow.
Not only is this record impressive on a technical level, but the songs on here are also so unique. I never expected pop rock to sound so good when slowed down and... not catchy. It's really nice what they did on this album, even though I don't revere it as much as everyone else on this website.
