Polo & Pan - Caravelle
82

House music can honestly get really boring, oftentimes it feels like the genre is comprised of music that sounds all so similar to each other, but artists like Polo & Pan, Caravan Palace, etc, really twist it into something unique and fun. That's what I really love about this album. The term "Tropical House" really fits it so insanely well, it really does feel like I'm partying on a remote island somewhere. This music is so pretty, and I'd love to hear more of it. ... read more

Amnesia Scanner - HOAX
83

Uh.... ignoring the noise cancellation half since they're all just weird broken soundscapes, this album rocks! Their album last year, STROBE.RIP was one I quite enjoyed, but did see them move into a bit more of a chiller direction, and I wondered if this one was going to be like that too but nope they're back to their crazy ass shit. The hellish vocal processing and the malicious sounding production is right back all over. I will say some of these tracks feel... short. There's ... read more

Gazelle Twin - Pastoral
92

Holy cow! This album is absolutely amazing! I am genuinely quite amazed at the sound design, the vocal processing is out of this world and I am all for it. There's a certain level of mania to these songs that I don't see in music very much, but it's really really interesting. I think the absolute pinnacle of this album is the song "Hobby Horse", that thing goes CRAZY, the industrial booming beats, the screeching vocals, it comes together in such a fascinating way. Other ... read more

Fire-Toolz - I will not use the body's eyes today.
71

This is my first introduction to Fire-Toolz and this album is... certainly interesting! There's a very vaporwave feeling to most of these songs, but significantly more chaotic. "Sophrosyne In The Mirror Of Simple Souls" is a very pretty intro song, and "Soda Lake Game With Genie" is also a really nice and really strange vaporwave x industrial crossover?? I dig it. I think the midsection of this album is probably the weakest, those middle 3 songs are kinda all over the ... read more

VHS Head - Phasia
65

This is a pretty solid project, with a lot of interesting beats fused with really warped and wonky samples, but it does lack a little bit as a lot of these songs don't feel like they go anywhere. Still some cool stuff though.

SOPHIE - SOPHIE
93

Okay, I haven't listened to the album yet but I feel the need to make a statement about it considering the um... legacy of posthumous releases typically being primarily by really shitty people only creating/releasing it as to cash grab it.

THIS ALBUM IS NOT THAT!!! Firstly, this album was already 90% finished by the time of her passing, so anyone saying that this doesn't have sophie's touch is wrong. She had already chosen this exact tracklist, this has been basically set since ... read more

Mr.Kitty - Unreal, Vol. 2
50

um. This isn't much different to unreal volume one except it has even less good tracks. The only two tracks that made any impact on me are "Nightmare" and "Crying", both of which aren't as good as the best songs on unreal volume one either. however I still do enjoy these songs. If only they weren't surrounded by 18 nothing tracks...

Mr.Kitty - Unreal, Vol. 1
66

The quality level of these songs is EXTRAORDINARILY mixed. It's mostly really really mid forgettable electro pop synthwave whatever-you-want-to-call-it but there are a couple of genuinely fantastic tracks here, which prevent this album from being a total slog. I would say 6x6 is the most adjacent to other stuff he's released, probably the most digestible for fans of Mr.Kitty. My personal favourites are Terror, Parasite, and Chainsaw though, all 3 of them are pretty wild and lean more ... read more

Chromatics - Night Drive
73

I find it extremely fascinating that an album like this came out in 2007, as the synthwave genre really had not taken off yet, so this was actually somewhat ahead of its time. And the results are... mixed! Generally pretty good, but it absolutely has some pitfalls, certain things about the song definitely sound dated by this point and the vocals can be a bit flat at points.

I want to make it clear I am reviewing the 15 track version of this album since that is the only version on spotify and I ... read more

NANORAY - MANZAI
64

It's pretty solid. Nothing really remarkable, and they definitely have better stuff, but it's still fairly solid glitchcore stuff.

Floating Points - Cascade
74

I don't really have any concept on Floating Points but honestly this was really really good! I love the synthwork on this album, especially in the more fast paced and chaotic moments such as Fast Forward, and Ocotillo. They both have a lot going on, and change quite a bit through the song, which is really good since these are both 7+ minute songs, but they absolutely make everything out of that runtime. Another key highlight is Birth4000 which is honestly just groovy as HELL, I can't ... read more

TR/ST - Performance
70

TR/ST is back with a pretty solid collection of dark synth pop tracks! I think it lacks a bit of viscerality that some of his past work has, but it's still a really solid collection of tracks. I especially love the closer "Warp", that thing is just so ethereal and freaky I really love it.

Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing
75

I do think it lacks a wee bit of what I know fuck buttons is capable is, but it's still really really nice. Also, Ribs Out genuinely terrifies me. I love it.

Mr. Oizo - Lambs Anger
68

Not his best work. Not his worst work either. It's got a lot of interesting stuff, but it does feel a bit bloated.

NERO - Into The Unknown
53

Wow this album is ..!!..

just fine. Yeahhhhh I'm kind of disappointed, I was looking forward to this, I know it's a controversial opinion but I really loved their last album, Between II Worlds, and I was pretty excited for what they would do next but this just feels sooooo generic so I'm really disappointed. This is extremely by the books edm without doing anything interesting- I wish their vocalist was used a bit more but even then her vocals seem a bit washed out compared to ... read more

DATAGIRL - Hello World
71

Yeah, I am here from death's dynamic shroud, but you know what that's okay because this was really nice! I think this album has a pretty eh first half, just not really the most interesting songs but the second half definitely picks it up. "On My Mind" and "I Choose You (Again)" are definitely my two favourites.

Boy Harsher - Country Girl Uncut
74

Super groovy synthwave! "Motion" definitely the #1 track here, I love how unsettling and ethereal it is. "Electric" and "Westerners" are also top songs. Not groundbreaking or anything but still fun!

SONOIO - Red
91

SONOIO's music is sort of like a mix between alt rock and synthwave, whatever that is, I really really love it, and I wish he was more popular. I mean, songs like "Enough" are just absolutely sick, really fun production and just have something to them that just really strikes my brain, it's very longing with its melody, and has a really fantastic production. That is probably the best song on this album, but don't get it twisted that it's the only good song, as ... read more

Mura Masa - Curve 1
67

I think this album is pretty nifty, but definitely could have been better. These songs don't have enough progression to be lasting this long! They either need to be shortened, or the progression needs to be better for it to really deserve that length. For instance, WHY is the EXTENDED MIX of fly on this album? It's still good, and I appreciate the extended mix, but the original really should be on this album. Also, the middle to late section of this album is sooo dull, it starts out ... read more

Ark Patrol - GEM
64

I really do not find this to be particularly interesting... it feels like very run of the mill house adjacent stuff, without anything really making it that memorable. It still has some good tracks, "Relief" being my personal favourite, but overall not really an important album.

On Sega Bodega - Dennis
"Yeah exactly. In Sega's music, he tends to embrace a really feminine side of being a man through both the production and the lyrics, which is much more typical of LGBT artists since this music and the themes tends to habit a more gender fluid space associated with the LGBT (part of the reason why I like it cause I'm gay lol). Ultimately to me it doesn't really matter if he is straight or not, the music is incredible, it was just kind of surprising lmaooo"

"god when you talked about the day sophie died it brought me right back to that too cause that was also the very first thing I saw when I woke up. I remember back then it was the height of covid so I was sleeping in absurdly late so I woke up just to go to the washroom and checked my phone and that was the first thing I saw and I was so shocked to the core that I could not fall back to sleep whatsoever. Also glad you mentioned Um Um as that has become one of my fav songs of all time and is one of the only ones that is able to consistently make me tear up LOL. Also want to mention Lost Everything by A.G. Cook & EasyFun (and Remi Wolf on vocals) off of their latest album cause that was also dedicated to her, it's another one that really hits me to the core. Really loved this writeup thank you a ton, from one queer person to another <3"
