David Lynch - Crazy Clown Time
36

Well....
First, I will say, Good Day Today, and Pinky's Dream absolutely SLAP. Good Day Today especially, that song is straight up 10/10.
But absolutely N O T H I N G else on this album lives up to it. I found myself deeply disliking nearly every single other song on this album, or if I didn't dislike it, I just didn't care.
Maybe this kind of music is just not for me.

Baths - Pop Music / False B-Sides
58

Yeah to me is Baths worst. I guess at this point it feels like he's still finding his sound and whatnot which I respect, and hey he definitely does find it later on but this is just super unmemorable to me.

TOKiMONSTA - Creature Dreams
61

I absolutely adore Toki's stuff, but this is definitely the weakest in her catalogue. It's just kind of dull. The two tracks with Gavin Turek are nice, but even then they sort of fade into the background. And so does everything else on this album. I mean, I don't find myself disliking any of the songs, which keeps me from ranking it more negatively, but nothing here sticks.

NERO - Welcome Reality
62

I truly do not understand all the love for this album but all the hate for their second album. Because truthfully, this album to me sounds extremely messy. Hopping all over the place, whereas I feel like their sound gets so much more refined on their second album. This thing still has some good songs, don't get me wrong, but also a lot that I really dislike. I do believe a handful of that is due to my absolute hatred for the "Brostep" genre, but regardless, I'm not usually one to care ... read more

Björk - Biophilia
64

Ranking Bjork at a 64 really hurts me because this album is much better than what I give it credit for, but I can't deny the reality of this site, that this site is meant for sharing music opinions, and my opinion is that I don't really enjoy this album. However, I'm sure any of you reading this review and disagreeing with me probably can understand it better than my brain can. Mutual Core is certainly the best song on the album though.

Modeselektor - Monkeytown
68

I find two songs on this thing absolutely fantastic (Blue Clouds & Shipwreck) and none of the rest really draw me in. RIP.

Grimes & d'Eon - Darkbloom
70

Vanessa is nice, the EP is nice, not mindblowing though.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica
72

Admittedly I don't fully understand all the hype surrounding this album but whatever. It's still good, I just think OPN has more interesting.
TOP 3 SONGS: Submersible, Andro, Power Of Persuasion

Lusine - Long Light
82

This is one of the biggest surprises for me this year so far. Lusine is an artist I have only been familiar with through "Just a cloud", around 4 years ago. I've kind of grown out of enjoyment for this style of downtempo/IDM since then, I still enjoy it, but it doesn't keep me as engaged as it used to. So going into this, I wasn't expecting much. But it handily surpassed my expectations, the vibes here are awesome.
TOP 3 SONGS: Zero To Sixty, Transonic, Dreaming

C2C - Tetra
67

It's not really... super captivating? Has a couple decent tracks but just kind of falls into irrelevancy with all the other similar sounding stuff out there. Apart from Delta, I think that one is fascinating and great.
TOP 3 SONGS: Delta, The Cell, Arcades

FKA twigs - EP1
68

Very.... laid back. Still decent. But go stream magdalene instead.

Anna Meredith - Black Prince Fury
71

Anna Meredith has one of the most unique sounds of any artist I've ever heard and I'd say these early EPs do a good job at testing the waters, but the albums are where it's truly refined and defined. It is still solid, but definitely lacks the feel she manages to perfect on her albums. Never Wonder is a highlight here. Nautilus is also here I guess but honestly I'd attribute that more to Varmints than this.

Grimes - Visions
79

Dream pop has been around for long before this, but this is where I'd say modern "Ethereal pop" began from. While it's not my favourite grimes album (Hello art angels), I still think it's pretty amazing and an incredibly important pillar in the Grimes discography.

Lauren Bousfield - Avalon Vales
60

Hmmmm it's pretty decent but kind of falls to the wayside for me in terms of Lauren's work.

Four Tet - Beautiful Rewind
69

This is another four tet release that kind of falls to the wayside for me. It's nice. I like it. But it doesn't draw me in like a lot of his other work.
TOP 3 SONGS: Gong, Parallel Jalebi, Ba Teaches Yoga

IAMX - The Unified Field
70

TOP 3 SONGS: I Come With Knifes, Animal Impulses, The Unified Field

The Knife - Shaking the Habitual
70

This is easily one of the most out there electro pop records there is. I mean, who else puts a 19 minute drone piece in the middle of their album?! One thing this album certainly does not do is fade into the background. It's certainly interesting, and it has some of my favourite songs from the duo, but it just is a bit too chaotic for me to rank any higher.
TOP 3 SONGS: Full Of Fire, Raging Lung, A Tooth For An Eye

Bonobo - The North Borders
72

This is an electronic album that feels almost akin to camping in the woods for me. Altogether it doesn't majorly stand out, but has a couple of fantastic tracks.
TOP 3 SONGS: Cirrus, First Fires, Sapphire

CocoRosie - Tales of a GrassWidow
77

CocoRosie tries their hand at a concept album and I think it goes preeeeettty well! It's kind of funny because every song here I either really like, or really dont like, with a slight lean towards really like, but that might be a personal thing. I don't feel like this one gets talked about very often but honestly it has most of my favourite songs by the duo.
TOP 3 SONGS: Tears For Animals, Poison, Gravediggress

Tirzah - I'm Not Dancing
80

It's pretty cool honestly. Inside Out crushes. The sound is sick. Don't have much to say beyond that.

On Sega Bodega - Dennis
"Yeah exactly. In Sega's music, he tends to embrace a really feminine side of being a man through both the production and the lyrics, which is much more typical of LGBT artists since this music and the themes tends to habit a more gender fluid space associated with the LGBT (part of the reason why I like it cause I'm gay lol). Ultimately to me it doesn't really matter if he is straight or not, the music is incredible, it was just kind of surprising lmaooo"

"no problem and ofc yeah, she was one of the first queer people that I really looked up to and made me feel comfy in my own body as a queer person so it hit really hard but I take solace in the fact that I am not the only one she impacted in that way with her work"

"god when you talked about the day sophie died it brought me right back to that too cause that was also the very first thing I saw when I woke up. I remember back then it was the height of covid so I was sleeping in absurdly late so I woke up just to go to the washroom and checked my phone and that was the first thing I saw and I was so shocked to the core that I could not fall back to sleep whatsoever. Also glad you mentioned Um Um as that has become one of my fav songs of all time and is one of the only ones that is able to consistently make me tear up LOL. Also want to mention Lost Everything by A.G. Cook & EasyFun (and Remi Wolf on vocals) off of their latest album cause that was also dedicated to her, it's another one that really hits me to the core. Really loved this writeup thank you a ton, from one queer person to another <3"
