Joji - SMITHEREENS
NR

Only one half of the subject. Or: the fractured subject.

The album begins and I am confused. My expectations were low, my mood accordingly lousy. I didn't know Joji before. This work is the first my ears have been allowed to hear, and I can say right away: I am surprised. The first song, “Glimpse of Us” is a ballad about a past love that won't let go of the artist. She seems irreplaceable to him, his thoughts are constantly with her, even when he is with another person. The lyrics ... read more

坂本龍一 [Ryuichi Sakamoto] - 12
NR

Inspired by Caspar David Friedrich's “The Monk by the Sea”.

One man, one sea. Tumultuous waves that whip up foam. Dune-like sand, interwoven with vegetation that is struggling for air. About three quarters of the picture are made up of the sky, which is largely kept in a cool blue and gradually gets darker towards the sea, so that the clouds and the horizon blur together. In the center of the sky, clouds can be seen painstakingly emerging from the pale contrast of the sky blue. The ... read more

Anti-Flag - LIES THEY TELL OUR CHILDREN

Why did the point in punk just disappear?

I didn't want to write anything about this album at first. Any attention for this album is one attention too many. In the end, however, I let myself be persuaded to do so, because there is a certain thematic proximity to my other reflections. Also, several friends have asked me what I think of this album. I hereby answer that question. Mainly because thematically, I often dealt with neoliberalism and capitalist ideology. But Anti-Flag show on this ... read more

Tom Odell - Best Day of My Life
NR

The symptom of our time.

This time I will not work my way through the track list from top to bottom, but instead devote myself to the weakest, one might even say the least important track (I believe it’s the most important from an ideology critical standpoint) on this album. “Giving A F***” is a track in which the lyrical self deals with his self-doubt, only to blame the critics in the very next breath. What makes this title so interesting? Exactly, it is meaningless to the ... read more

Arctic Monkeys - The Car
NR

Good idea, palpable concept, and yet something is missing.

“A musician who loves the slow tempo will take the same pieces of sound slower and slower. So there is no standing still in any love.” (FN, 294)

The album begins and with the first bar it is already clear – everything is different. The next 37 minutes will be something “special”, whether good or bad cannot be said yet – basically, in modern times the word special is too often appointed as a synonym ... read more

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Cool It Down
______________________________________

Note: The following critique is by no means an ordinary critique, since not only the aesthetic experience influences the evaluation, but the whole thing has been formulated using an ideology-critical lens. At certain points, I will repeatedly refer to scientific literature or articles as quotations in order to fill the argumentation with life and substance.

Adorno's thesis 51 “Behind the mirror.” from the ... read more
