Tyler, The Creator - IGOR
90

I remember hearing this when it first came out. I had never listened to Tyler before, but somehow must have heard about this album through word-of-mouth or something. I knew he was a rapper, and that's all. Hearing this for the first time, I thought to myself "I mean it's alright, but where's the rapping? Where are the BARS?"

Obviously I've come a long way since then. 'IGOR' is a toxic masterpiece.

Favorite track: NEW MAGIC WAND

An album for the senses. 'Windswept Adan' is a shimmering experience that stimulates the mind with it's alluring mystical atmosphere.

Favorite track: Dawn in the Adan

Wednesday - Rat Saw God
70

'Rat Saw God' is loud and unfiltered indie rock, painting a descriptive picture of the American south. Bull Believer is one of the best songs of the year, but there is an unwavering consistency on this album, from the noisiest screams to the more delicate and restrained passages.

Favorite track: Bull Believer

Souza & M27 - Before The Beginning

Thank you @BruhMan for consistently sharing your work with me. Whether or not I love it, I'm always happy to hear new music from you and support your work.

You know that EP's and LP's are graded on a much stricter scale than singles. And with this being the long awaited debut EP... I don't think it's all that great, sorry :(

Not to be "that guy" but I have serious problems with the mixing throughout this EP. There were a handful of moments throughout that felt like auditory ... read more

Big K.R.I.T. - 4eva Is a Mighty Long Time
90

This is the type of album that cements an artist into legend status, and should be seen as one of the greatest and most consistent double LP's in hip hop history.

Favorite track: Bury Me In Gold

Tim Hecker - No Highs
80

This is really great. Tim Hecker creates an unsettling ambient experience that feels like it has it's own rhythmic heartbeat.

Favorite track: Monotony

NF - HOPE
20

It’s actually as if Macklemore and AJR neglected to raise a child together.

Ahhh here we are again NF, just like old times.

Back in 2016, before I really had any clue what was going on in the world of music, I was actually a pretty big fan of NF. I was introduced to him from the Madden 16 soundtrack… which should be a good indication of what my general cultural awareness was like at the time (the Madden soundtrack is also where I heard Kendrick for the first time). I got multiple ... read more

boygenius - the record

The hoes don’t sound scared on this, they sound sad ðŸ˜Ē

Founded in 2018, indie rock and indie folk outfit boygenius consists of established indie singer-songwriters Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker. The trio sort of just fell into place, as all three were simply fans of each other’s music. After experiences over the years of opening shows for one another and generally running in similar music circles, the three formed a close bond, which also turned into a band. ... read more

파란ë…ļė„ [Parannoul] - After the Night
90

wowowowow. WOW.

I'll be honest, Parannoul is one of the only remaining artists I've felt peer-pressured into enjoying. His music something that I haven't fully clicked with to this point, though I've generally given him the benefit of the doubt, citing "there's clearly something I'm missing or underappreciating". The January album 'After the Magic' was really good, though I haven't returned to the project since the release and hasn't left a significant impression on me.

I'm beyond ... read more

Lana Del Rey - Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd
60

If you're interested in dark and depressing slowcore, which I often am, there are definitely some really great songs to take away from this (mostly the singles). However, '...Ocean Blvd' starts to take more influence from trap towards the end of this record, and with the album already too long for its own good, it sputters to the finish line.

If the album continued with the creepy sounds and emotionally taxing lyrics from songs like A&W, this would be great. But instead, I'm feeling mostly ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Live at Bush Hall
90

It’s finally out on streaming and I’m boutta bust

If you haven’t already heard, UK art rock band Black Country, New Road is probably the hottest thing out there since sliced bread. They’ve taken the underground rock industry, and more specifically this website, by storm over the last handful of years since their 2021 debut ‘For the first time’. Last year’s album ‘Ant’s From Up There’ is likely the most popular pick for AOTY and is ... read more

JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown - SCARING THE HOES
97

I am the target audience for this album frfr.

‘SCARING THE HOES’ has to be the musical equivalent to teabagging. JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown, two of the most revered names in the underground hip hop landscape, team up for what will hopefully be their first of many installments.

With both artists being well known for their eccentric performances, voices, and production, ‘SCARING THE HOES’ was surely set to be a boundary pushing endeavor. And with that, it certainly ... read more

Black Honey - A Fistful Of Peaches
70

‘A Fistful of Peaches’ is the third studio LP from British indie rock band Black Honey. The band is composed of lead vocalist Izzy Phillips, guitarist Chris Ostler, bassist Tommy Taylor, and drummer Alex Woodward. The band has a sizable underground cult following in the UK for their live performances and strong attitude, dating back to their self-titled EP from 2014.

‘A Fistful of Peaches’ is another impressive entry in their discography, brimming with angst, pent up ... read more

Tha God Fahim & Mach-Hommy - Notorious Dump Legends: Volume 2
60

A really good drumless record, Mach-Hommy and Fahim certainly bring bars and some great mellow flows. N*** Sooooo Good is an awesome track. This is the type of record that serious hip-hop heads might appreciate.

Pop Smoke - Meet The Woo
70

Pop Smoke may have been a bit of a one trick pony, but it’s a damn good trick. He had one of the coldest deliveries in mainstream hip hop.

100 gecs - 10,000 gecs
70

'10,000 gecs' is the brand new studio album from hyperpop and brazenly online duo 100 gecs. This is the sophomore album from group members Dylan Brady and Laura Les following the success of their 2019 debut '1000 gecs' (with no comma... that bothers me for some reason). Their debut was an unabashedly bold and creative statement, taking everything hyperpop and cranking it up to 10. Their pursuit of pure fun and catchy bangers is really appealing, and has helped the pair gain a bit of an online ... read more

Manchester Orchestra - The Valley of Vision
90

One Sentence Wrap-Up:

Manchester Orchestra's latest EP in a dense a beautifully layered 6 tracks that build a cohesive and intense emotional response; 'The Valley Of Vision' will have a difficult time being dethroned as my favorite EP of the year.

Edit: It was dethroned

Boris - Pink
90

'Pink' is the tenth studio album from experimental rock and heavy metal outfit Boris. While they had found success prior to this album, it was really 'Pink' that launched them into international success and widespread critical acclaim.

This is quite the blistering record that rarely takes a moment to reflect, rather choosing to continue head on into some screaming guitars and heart thumping basslines. There's an extremely interesting mix between the relentless instrumentation and the hazy and ... read more

Dispirited Spirits - The Redshift Blues
80

'The Redshift Blues' is the second studio album from Portuguese band Dispirited Spirits and 19-year-old founder Indigo Dias. Their work has revolved around the theme of astronomy and space exploration, and much of the sound on this album elicits images of galaxies and supernovas.

The name of the album is an incredibly clever double entendre. A "redshift" is a physics term related to light, in which wavelengths are increased when two objects are moving apart. The change in wavelength ... read more

Ed Sheeran - x
90

My greatest guilty pleasure album.

'X' is the only album I ever bought on iTunes. Whenever my car turned on, this album would automatically start playing, and often times I was just too lazy to change it. I've heard this album probably 100 times more than any other album, and I know every single word.

While I can understand the negativity (especially on his other albums), this album will always hold a special place in my brain. The cliche pop rap and the melodramatic songwriter ballads... ... read more

On TheOnlyOpinion's review of By Storm - My Ghosts Go Ghost
"Nice review, "leaving the storm" is great. I almost feel like the ending in "GGG" is saying that the storm isn't something you can leave though, and more like a new relationship dynamic that needs to be tended to. The group is going to have to manage the storm rather than step out of it"

On Chorde's review of By Storm - My Ghosts Go Ghost
"Love the opening line, that feels like such a perfect way of encapsulating the record. Your comparisons between BTTIGTP and this are perfect too. As much as this album feels like a scar, it's a scar that RiTchie feels like he's trying to move on from to continue working, but his hand keeps brushing up against it. Its a constant reminder that grief isnt something that will just go away"
