山崎ハコ [Hako Yamasaki] - 流れ酔い唄
82

Before listening to this record I really believed the tag "Folk Pop" and expected something I didn't get, that's not a bad thing though, since what we have on this record is more "Psychedelic Folk" like the track "Nagare Yoi Uta" and even "Psychedelic Rock" like the track "Yokohama". This was a pleasant surprise, the vocals are amazing and haunting, the instruments feel tired and melancholic, at times a chilling listen, at times a ... read more

Two People - First Body

How beautiful and heartwarming. I don't have many words to express how I surprised I was when listening to this project and how much I've liked it. I've listened to it a couple of times before writing this and I'm still short for words. I can tell you that the production is quite good and very minimalistic, the tracks have a lot of very moody and dark elements, also very good ear candy. This is easily one of those records that you can put on a loop for the whole day and ... read more

Food For Animals - Belly

This is all I ever needed to satiate my need for noise, glitch and abstract hip hop. This is gnarly, noisy, crooked and broken. This is the needed blend, thank you. I love the drums, the vocals and the mixes just sound crisp as hell, the sounds are so well balanced and even though this is partially a noise record it is very listenable. I can tell you a number of good things about this record but it would be good to just tell you my favorite moments that made this record so special.

Молчат Дома [Molchat Doma] - Этажи [Etazhi]

Yeah, this was alright, the production saves this quite a lot. The drum machine is dry and let's the guitars and the synths float around the murky atmosphere this record has. The lyrics are depressing and sometimes quite tame which gives good contrast to the dark instrumentals. I was never a fan of this record because of it's stylistic and repetitive emotional loop but I can appreciate the value of the work being put in here, although this is something I wouldn't come back ... read more

Bicep - Isles

Just like I said in my review for the self-titled album, this record has all that but explored a little more. This has plucky elements, bright synths, fantastic vocals and vocals pads, and the drum work is just as clean as in the album before. This is one of the cleanest sounding electronic records I've heard, even surpassing "Bicep" sonically, some of the ideas fell a little short sometimes but the sound selection made up for it. These guys are experts at building the tension of ... read more

Flume - Hi This Is Flume
60

Hi Flume. I can't say I enjoyed this all that much, the majority of these tracks just don't compute for me and don't really sound like something Flume would put out. The glitch aspect is over the top, it's fun chopping at samples and creating jittery melodies but the glitch on these tracks just feels like a gimmick, it's choppy just for the sake of being choppy. I know this is a mixtape but I can't help but feel that these tracks don't respect the sound they ... read more

"The most menacing album I own" - Thom Yorke
I get what the man is saying, this record is noise, atmosphere, breaks and synths. The breaks are heavily distorted and sound very bright, they give a contrast to the drones and the synths used. The atmosphere is nasty, dark and cryptic, probably the best one I've heard from a record like this. The album feels very fresh with it's sound selection, the breaks never get old and the various interludes are a breath or fresh air before ... read more

Metamatics - Neo Ouija

Great IDM work, this actually feels like IDM, along with some breakbeat and kind of garage feel to the record. The drum machine sounds cool, really gritty and distorted yet quite fragile, they click and drive the main synths along a danceable path. This doesn't really feel like the old record it is, it's fresh and highly entertaining electronic music, good stuff.
Favorite moments: "Solange Jimenez" has a fantastic and delicate break going with the bubbly synths on this ... read more

Cadmio - Tailwind

A mellow and nostalgic EP. I've been listening to it for years and I thought that it's time to add it here. This record was with me through a lot of things in my life and I love to listen to it whenever I'm feeling down. I'm not a fan of lo-fi hip-hop but this is excellent, the guitars, the piano and the drums are so well recorded and feel very homemade. All of these tracks are my favorite but the best one are "Tailwind" with it's beautiful guitar arpeggio. ... read more

Baraka - Nutty Bass / I'll Be There
81

Fun. It's amazing how crisp all of this sounds, even when being quite old in age everything is so clear. The sample chopping in "Nutty Bass" hits quite hard along with its tough bass. "I'll Be There" is fantastic as well, the plucky synths and the crazy bass pattern is admirable, this is my favorite track, it has its heavy but also mellow moments, never expected to hear what I heard from this, just great!

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
95

This album is beautiful as much as it is heartbreaking. There's so much pain and suffering in this world and as the years go by we realize how hard things are becoming. This was a beautiful, eye opening experience and an unforgettable one. The album starts with a song that feels like a cry for help, talking about the "21st century schizoid man" which I think is what we are all becoming in one way or another. Moving on from that, we have the second song, and I love the feeling of ... read more

Headache - Thank You For Almost Everything
81

I've been a fan of Headache ever since I heard it. This record on the other hand didn't meet my expectations as I would expect it to. The first half of the record felt very off, it felt a little too electronic for what I know of Headache, the drums and the synths were very overwhelming for me and drown the vocals at times, the mixing felt very out of touch too. The record picks up right after "Dodge This!" which I consider to be the worst track here, after that the record ... read more

Bowery Electric - Beat
85

I'm happy that my first impression of Bowery Electric was "Beat", this was dark, hypnotic and very atmospheric. This record sound like it was from the future, it puts me in a dystopian mindset and makes the world become a little grey. The success of this record was very likely because of this nature, it opresses you but let's a lot of it's elements shine because of that. The drums are often cranky and feel like they are oxidized and being hit against eachother. The ... read more

Skalpel - Skalpel
87

This vas a very lively record, the layers of the acoustic with the electronic is such a fantastic blend. At times this record even felt like it had some free impovisation elements, I can't really tell that for a fact but the tunes are certainly beautiful and evolve quite naturally. And the closer is such a fantastic way to wrap everything up. I can't say much about the whole project other than that, this was a beautiful and refreshing album experience, I felt like I got my ... read more

Sabers - Specter

Oh, how cool was this, very noisy and filled with a lot of nasty drones, fantastic record. Also the drum recordings are out of this world, good stuff, filled with little jazzy elements all through out. Can't tell you much more, a very good listen for noise fans. My only issue would be that the textures do get a little stale when you get enought of them, but I don't mind it that much.
Favorite moments: "Lion Pose" is fantastic, plenty of precise drumming and here is where you ... read more

Cornelius - Fantasma

It's not an obligation, but headphones are absolutely recommended for this, the mixing of the tracks is so worth it to check out on any headphones you have. Honestly, I wasn't expecting the album I got from this. The first track I ever heard from this project was "Mic Check" which is a fantastic introduction to this, although a bit misleading, it still is my absolute favorite from this album, if you listen to this track alone, like I did, you might imagine that this project ... read more

Bicep - Bicep
81

I really hope that this record could be remembered as "one of the classics". This was a very cohesive listen, the majority of the tracks had this plucky feel since a lot of sounds had a trance gate. The synths here were very bright even when sometimes that was too much, sometimes they're too bright it burns but thankfully that was't a recurring issue. From there I can say that the production is pretty outstanding, specifically the drums, they were mixed in such a specific ... read more

Venetian Snares - Rossz Csillag Alatt Született

This is classical music made for modern men! The necesary fusion between the past and the present, creating something from the future! I've showed this album to plenty of people from plenty of age groups and everyone was seemingly surprised at first but loved it at the same time, this record has a lot of nice surprises and the breaks NEVER get old, even when they sound similar they have their own unique way of pushing the sound of the orchestra forward, enhancing the sampled pieces quite a ... read more

LTJ Bukem - Producer 01
95

After rererererelistening to this I have finally gathered some words to say about this. There's no doubt that this is a fantastic compilation of the best works from a fantastic artist from the DnB scene, LTJ Bukem. This album has a fantastic flow, the standout are for sure the keys and various synths used, a great example of good synths are the ones used in the intro for "Constellation", magical and soothing. Another standout of the production is some sound design choices and ear ... read more

Arovane - Tides

This is one of those records where none of the tracks are skippable, all the tracks are atmospherically puzzling and have a fair share of field recorded sounds making the atmosphere that much greater. The drums are constantly a standout here, the patterns they follow and the grooves played are simple yet enchanting. This is not an over the top record and that's what makes it good, it's not trying hard to impress you because it doesn't need to.
