A flawed but solid collection of 80's revivalist synthpop bangers.
'Girl With No Face' is the 3rd album from Canadian singer and songwriter Allie Hughes under the Allie X pseudonym, and in recent weeks this has been one of my most anticipated releases of 2024 and that was due to the quality of one of the lead singles 'Off With Her Tits' which is an incredible futuristic synthpop banger and is one of the best songs to drop this year, as for the other singles I had yet to hear them but I was ... read more
'Where we've been, Where we go from here' is an album that just came out of nowhere during this weeks new music Friday, it's the debut album from Illinois band Friko and prior to this I was completely unfamiliar with them as well as the Hallogallo Kids scene from which they come from. When it dropped last Friday I ended up prioritising other albums over it but seeing the amount of high ratings that it maintained over the course of the week had me curious to see what the hype was about, and ... read more
After over two years since their last album, UK Post-Punk band IDLES returns with their latest record 'TANGK', a record that they've been building up to for the past few months with the release of singles like 'Dancer' with LCD Soundsystem, as well as 'Grace' and 'Gift Horse', I heard two of these singles prior to hearing the album and to be honest they didn't really leave the greatest impression on me, and as the release date for the new album got closer and closer I was getting worried that ... read more
Ye fans out here proving they're just the male equivalent of Swifties.
'Vultures 1' is a new collaborative effort from Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign, it's also a release that from the get-go is a controversial one considering Ye's name is attached to it, but that controversy only got further amplified by his actions over the past few years with Ye becoming an open anti-semite who platforms white supremacists and Nazi's as well as openly embracing Nazi imagery. Ye has always sought controversy ... read more
This latest Tate McRae album was one that I was gonna skip over when it came out to be honest, and I had skipped over it when it dropped but of course commitments exist and I am committed to a stupid ranked list so yeah! Tate McRae is a Canadian Pop artist who I had first heard of when she dropped her debut album 'i used to think i could fly', and while that album isn't the worst thing that mainstream Pop had to offer over the past few years I can't say that I liked it at all, so many elements ... read more
Last night the 2024 Grammy's ceremony took place, the awards handed out during the ceremony are always an interesting topic to discuss when the event is over and done with but to be honest the awards themselves weren't the part I was most invested in, even despite how egregious some of the winners were like Killer Mike sweeping the rap categories and a mid Taylor Swift album winning AOTY, the part that I was most invested in was the fact that the legendary Tracy Chapman made a rare appearance ... read more
'Wall of Eyes' is the sophomore album from UK Rock supergroup The Smile, comprised of course with members of Radiohead Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood as well as drummer Tom Skinner of the now disbanded Jazz group Sons of Kemet. This record is coming out about a year and a half after The Smile's debut album 'A Light for Attracting Attention' which is a very good album, I went back to it recently and it still holds up even if it was a little unfocused as a complete cohesive work, that album and ... read more
With peace and love, talk about a sophomore slump :(
Courting's sophomore album 'New Last Name' comes out about a year and a half after their debut album 'Guitar Music', which was one of my favourite albums of 2022, I loved how the band were able to blend so many different genre elements together while crafting fun experimental bangers that had great pop sensibilities, to this day songs like 'Tennis', 'Loaded' and 'Jumper' go incredibly hard. Not too long after the band started releasing ... read more
Fuck you Fantano, actually fuck you. I was happily gonna skip over this shit album but you just had to give it a not good. You inconsiderate bald bastard, think of the music reviewers who want to commit to dumb ranked lists that revolve around your negative review series for once smh.
Dave Burd a.k.a Lil Dicky a.k.a Lilliam Dickus is a rapper and comedian who I'm sure needs no introduction, the guy burst onto the scene around the mid 2010's with his album 'Professional Rapper' and since then ... read more
I probably had the worst introduction that I could've had to Glass Beach, I don't know if I had heard a song of theirs at random prior but my first exposure to them was unfortunately through one of their detested covers, specifically their cover of the iconic Car Seat Headrest song 'Beach Life‐in‐Death', the CSH version is amazing, one of the best and most essential songs that Will Toledo ever made, but in my opinion Glass Beach's cover butchers it and turns it into the most bland, stiff ... read more
'Penalty of Leadership' is a big step up from the first Boldy James & Nicholas Craven collab album, while I wouldn't say it's the best offering from Boldy himself or even put it up against any of his Alchemist produced albums or 'Manger On McNichols', I have to admire this project for being one of his more introspective albums. If you're in any way familiar with Boldy James' work or just with him as an emcee in general then you know what you're in for, and you definitely won't be surprised ... read more
Edit: The biopic isn't real apparently and the trailer was just a parody
Kicking off 2024 with the first big mainstream rap release of the year is 21 Savage with his new album 'american dream', which is also gonna be a multimedia project as the album will be attached to a biopic film of the same name which is directed by and starring Donald Glover, as well as starring Caleb McLaughlin of Stranger Things fame. At this point 21 Savage needs no introduction, he's proven himself to be one of the ... read more
Austin Lunn's Panopticon returns with a new project two years after their last effort '...And Again Into the Light', which was one of my favourite albums of 2021 and one of my favourite Black Metal projects that I've heard, especially in the context of modern Black Metal. For me that album was so unique and very interesting as Austin proves that he's one of the more forward thinking and potent acts that Black Metal has to offer as his music crossed over influences of Atmospheric Black Metal ... read more
Danny Brown is one of my favourite rappers of all time, his 2016 album 'Atrocity Exhibition' is one of my favourite albums of all time, so naturally when the release date for 'Quaranta' was announced and when some of the singles were coming out I was beyond excited, with 'Quaranta' being one of my most anticipated releases of the year. Now that it's out and I've had time to digest it and I'm not one bit disappointed, and I can safely say I have a second Danny Brown related project that is a ... read more
Bro really sampled an MLG trickshot montage parody sound effect.
For me 'Integrated Tech Solutions' is Aesop Rock's best album since 'The Impossible Kid', that doesn't mean the projects he's dropped inbetween have been subpar to me, in fact I still really love 'Malibu Ken' and both 'Spirit World Field Guide' and 'Garbology' are still very solid projects, but 'Integrated Tech Solutions' feels like his most strong and memorable project since then. If you're familiar with Aesop Rock then nothing ... read more
The discourse surrounding this album over the fact that André 3000 doesn't rap on it has been interesting to say the least, and it's not only because some people were disappointed that we wouldn't hear André rap but because of how the man himself feels about continuing to rap well into his 40's, in his own words he feels that it's "inauthentic" to continue rapping in his 40's and for me it's a sentiment that I can't agree with at all, I can maybe understand where he's ... read more
I'm kicking myself why the fuck did it take me so long to listen to Sampha??? Anyways, I've known of Sampha for a few years now from his guest spots on other artists records, notably featuring on records from the likes of Drake and Kendrick Lamar but until now I never got to listen to his own music, and I wish I got to his work sooner because I was seriously missing out. I heard his debut 'Process' this morning and it's a great album, it's really my kind of R&B album with unique production ... read more
If this is really meant to be WSG's final album then what a mess to end everything on. While I've always felt like WSG focused way too much on being a curator rather than his own artist, I also admired what he brought to the table as far as his presence and production choices were concerned, it was just rare that the former ever truly showed itself as he left most of the room to featured artists. 'And Then You Pray For Me' is said to be a sequel to 'Pray For Paris', which is a very good project ... read more
