Young Thug - JEFFERY
78

There are at times where I roll my eyes to Young Thug's lyrics. However, I can't help but appreciate his eccentricities as a vocalist and his uncanny ability to make catchy pop songs. If I look at this from a pop perspective, Thug made a pretty good album. That is a first for me.

Skepta - Konnichiwa
77

It's a cool listen. Skepta brings some new energy to grime rap and probably exposes it more to Americans through this album. However, I felt it wasn't the greatest project. Some tracks felt underdeveloped or average. However, I do think it is an enjoyable record for the most part.

Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker
86

I'm just wondering why 2016 has taken so many greats in music. Cohen somehow leaves us with a final testament to a long life of questioning and thinking. It feels like a conclusion to a great story and we are lucky to be able to listen to it.

Solange - A Seat at the Table
97

This album is sneakily good. Solange somehow is able to show the frustration of African-Americans over these past few years in an album that flows peacefully. It gets better with each listen, and it flows from track to track with no skip in beat. It is truly an engaging listen from beginning to end, and it is a contender for AOTY.

Bon Iver - 22, A Million
87

I have to say this is a beuatifully composed album. It is very brief but impactful. It is sonically very different from Bon Iver's previous album. It is very inventive and gorgeously worded. This is simply a marvelous album.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Skeleton Tree
90

An incredibly haunting and beautifully made album. There is a lot of grief on this album, but at the end of it you are left with tears of joy. Nick Cave made a very human album, and one that shows a strong expression of the tragedy parents endure when they lose their sons and daughters. Easily one of the best albums this year.

Isaiah Rashad - The Sun's Tirade
77

Rashad's new album is very mellow. However, he has a way of using inflections and diverse sounds to captivate us. I feel that this album is Rashad still trying to perfect his sound. I didn't love this album like Cilvia Demo. But it is still a commendable effort by Rashad.

Angel Olsen - MY WOMAN
90

Woman is a bold and beautiful record composed by Angel Olsen. The lyrics here are sincere and cut deep. There is a subtle poignancy to Angel Olsen in this record. She has a way to soothe you into her record. My Woman is Olsen's establishment into becoming one of the most prominent voices in indie rock.

Vince Staples - Prima Donna
78

Vince takes a few risks on this new EP. At the end of it all he makes a worthwhile EP that serves as a dessert for Summertime 06.

Frank Ocean - Blonde
98

Blonde is just the signal that proves Ocean is one of the most talented and unique songwriters of our time. Blonde is a master work of R&B aesthetics. It doesn't have the grandiosity of ChannelOrange, and it doesn't need to because it is a different project. Profound lyrics and emotion throughout the album. The production is enigmatic and gorgeous.

Neko Case - case/lang/veirs
80

It is not the most assuming album, but it is one that gets better with each listen. These three artists combined their talents to make 14 songs that are very well written and executed. It's a pleasant folk album to listen to.

Michael Kiwanuka - Love & Hate
83

This is nothing but straight up soul. Michael Kiwanuka does a great job of balancing his feelings on love, politics, and his place in the world. He is clearly influenced by Gaye, Cooke, and other great soul artists. However, it doesn't feel like an imitation, it is truly authentic.

ScHoolboy Q - Blank Face LP
77

I really liked parts of this album, but it just seemed to have too much filler. So many of the songs sounded the same, and it took away from some of the high points in the record(Groovy Tony, Tookie Knows). However, it is still a commendable effort by Schoolboy Q.

The Avalanches - Wildflower
85

Wildflower was a wonderful combination of sounds and genres. It maintains what made the Avalanches so good before; their uniqueness in using samples and colorful production. I had a lot of fun listening to this record.

Blood Orange - Freetown Sound
66

Im sorry I just wasn't feeling this one. Seventeen tracks and I just felt like so many of the tracks were too similar. The album just overall didn't become interesting too me, although I enjoy a few songs.

KAYTRANADA - 99.9%
82

This was like opening one of those goodies bags they give in birthday parties. It is an assortment of different music styles, and all of it is very enjoyable. Kaytranada presents great diversity in his production of songs. He also showcases his ability to make strong pop songs.

YG - Still Brazy
80

This album was exactly what I expected, and I loved it for it. It is unforgiving West Coast gangster rap and solidifies a consistent West Coast G-Funk sound throughout. It is not the most lyrical or thought-provoking hip hop album. It just manages to keep me entertained.

Swans - The Glowing Man
70

There was something about this album, that I couldn't really enjoy it the way I did for previous Swans records. I appreciate the ambition and musicianship of this record, however, I wasn't truly blown away by it. It is a good album, especially compared to other bands out there. But this album just pales in comparison to previous Swans' records.

Mitski - Puberty 2
84

Mitski's album got better with each listen. It is a wonderful indie record with bursts of emotion that hit you unexpectedly. I found myself loving her voice and the melodies throughout this album.
