Groovy, chill, dreamy and jazzy lounge vibes. Perfect background music to make life seem like a quaint lil french movie, maybe on a tiny bit of shrooms. I do have a slight aversion to the french daft punk-esque voice effect and sound, but it didn't bother me too much.
Fun quaint lil' true indie alt pop album with some quality sounding tracks. Nice synthy new gen tunes, and even a lil uk garage influence in the remixes.
Coming back to this album feels weird—it doesn’t seem like it’s been two years already, yet it somehow feels nostalgic. Who would’ve thought I’d be able to listen to a Travis Scott album all the way through without any issue?
It’s great, a future 2020s trap classic. Though it’s much more than a basic trap album—the blend of experimental and psychedelic elements is executed flawlessly. Most of the features feel like perfect additions ... read more
I got into a few dozen Griselda boom bap tracks back when I wasn’t even listening to music “properly” yet—basically before I listened to albums front to back. Now that I finally have the normal habit of going through entire projects, I’ve gotta say, this is gas. Past me was stubborn as hell for ignoring it.
As a die-hard trap fan, Griselda hits the perfect spot for that more abstract chill style of rap, when I need a break from Gangsta rap. I need to dig through ... read more
Some fucking shit from an ass. I genuinely feel like these songs were thrown together in under 24 hours. It’s one of those albums where you can look at the tracks rated under 70 and trust the AOTY community—pretty much only the songs above 70 are worth anything.
Amazing ethereal vibes and incredible vocals, with a really interesting blend of art pop, electronic and UK bass—what more could you ask for? I’m glad this artist was recommended to me after listening to Oklou. This is definitely music for the weirdos and people into the experimental and new gen stuff, and I’m happy to count myself among its listeners.
Happy I revisited this album after a few months— obviously its rating speaks for itself. The more Sour Times got stuck in my head, the more I started to appreciate the rest of the album and the trip-hop genre, which I’m still getting familiar with. It’s clearly a very elaborate and ornamental style, and Portishead was surely avant-garde and insanely influential in their prime. I’m really vibing with the whole aesthetic.
I doubt many people my age listen to this, but I ... read more
Man what I would do to experience New Orleans Jazz live back in the day. I feel pretentious being a gen-z that likes jazz while also feeling so special to experiecne this type of music that almost none of the people my age have even listened to once.
Sidenote: I actually first discovered this artist as a teenager watching Midnight in Paris lol. I’ve been in love with "Si tu vois ma mère" ever since.
Yeah, no, this guy clearly knows wtf he’s doing. He can star in one of the most streamed shows of all time and drop a genuinely great indie album. Leave a little talent for the rest of us.
I wouldn’t say the album is completely skip-free, but Djo really nails a tight, fresh, feel-good project, and that’s no small feat. I had no idea he’d been releasing music like this all the way back, about four years after Stranger Things first took off.
Just relistened to this, I don't know what I was thinking with a 78. I think I was just too attached to Immunity Every single song is great. Perfectly constructed warm and comforting bedroom pop with some of the most beautiful instrumentals.
Updated: I’m starting to embrace giving high ratings to albums that might not be universally seen as 90s but absolutely feel that way to me. I’m bumping this up again, because this really is the perfect winter album, holy shit. I keep ... read more
Nice synthy psychedelic tunes! Although nothing to write home about honestly. I'm not especially eager to re-listen to this album right away
Honestly I don't get the hype. I'll admit I nodded my head a couple times but apart from that, this album isn't eliciting much for me. I feel like I'm just not the target audience—I just don't listen or like music that is this EDM forward while also being so melancholy... I dunno, sorry to disappoint, just not my thing i guess.
P.S. I will say, if you consider dullscythe to be music that deserves an 84, I hope you choke on a peanut...
Great lil psychedelic album. Really chill, great composition, really easy to listen to. Nothing to dislike here.
Finally listened to this album in full, now that I’m consciously revisiting albums for my AOTY list.
This rating needs no explanation.
I actually discovered this album way later than most people, which is insane considering how genre-bending and it is—some of the best psychedelic pop the human race will ever create.
I'd confidently say the Currents era belongs in the top 20 music eras of all time.
Edit: I just have to include that the album cover has to be in the top 20 ... read more
There’s really not a bad song on this project.
That said, I can see why some people find the album a little dull.
I noticed that most songs sounded the same, and can be quite melancholy, almost in a “cold winter night” mood but honestly, that’s part of what I enjoy about it.
You definitely need to be in the right mindset and mood to appreciate it, and while I don't think it's really that groundbreaking, for someone who’s “reviving” jazz for ... read more
I'm gonna do something a lot of people would say is doing too much and boost this album from an 83 to an 87.
I don't know why I like this album so much, but I'm sure a big part is that this was one of the first albums I listened to on the beginning of my music listening journey, and also was the album that helped me through my surgery.
Now that I look back, I realize how much of a basic indie pop album this was, and I mean that in the best way possible. Beatopia was the perfect ... read more
I'm a sucker for this. I knew immediately that I'd love Laufey after finding out her genre of music, this is such a comforting fall or winter album. Granted I listened to this end of summer but nevertheless great chill bossa nova vibes.
