A cultural outlook on the Haitian experience.
Mach-Hommy dominates the Jazz-Rap scene right now and is one of the genres most prevalent and consistent artists, Pray For Haiti is a new beginning for him though. Hommy isn’t afraid to show his natural accent this time and can flow over his beats with a new formula that solidifies Haiti as his most engaging project to date. From the focused lyrics or the well placed skits there is insight into the poverty, culture and overall Haitian ... read more
FYI i’m drunk out of my mind right now and so this opinion could change and will copy this over from my notes when I remember about it. I don’t like the trap approach that was taken here but the non trap cuts were really sick. I wasn’t a fan of the flows that Westside Gunn presented on songs like Kostas where he was easily outshined by his peers, I just don’t think he succeeds on these types of beats. I think And Then You Pray For Me could have been a better follow up to ... read more
My least favourite song on Piñata but it’s still awesome. Harold’s has an awesome chorus that gets better every time it comes around, the song talks about Freddie eating chicken and running for mayor which is an eye raising choice of topic but I think that’s the point. Madlib and Freddie Gibbs work so well together because of how well Freddie can flow on any beat, he changes his delivery many times on the LP and never fails to utilise his talents. The hook demonstrates ... read more
If I'm being honest I gave it some positive points because of how short it is, with the runtime you wont be bored but you will still regret listening. Anitta has never ever impressed me nor anyone I know, I don't know a single person who is a fan of her so maybe her audience is overseas. Regardless, who the hell choses to turn on this music and enjoy it on purpose, dawg be fr. The songs present aren't good but aren't painful they're so plain and personality-free that it blends in with all 90% ... read more
Interesting new approach from EARTHGANG. I am digging the neo-soul take the two are venturing into, they only get better at it the further in we get. You can tell that the songs with rapping do come more natural for the pair and in the long run are the highlights, Olu and WowGr8 probably just need to spend more time with the craft and really put those 10,000 hours in. Imagine is an incredible song for example: great singing, thrilling guitars, and electrify harmony, this is the best we see ... read more
This is the Lana Del Rey album everyone returns to the least. Lust for Life has some of the best solo pop ballads of her career but the collaboration tracks make it a bumpy train ride. I also feel like there is less personality and identity on here than Lana’s other projects which have advanced recognisable soundscapes and topic focus but Lust for Life seems more like an amalgamation of hits thrown together, at least they are put together in a uniting way that has a consistent potency. On ... read more
Yeah the music is amateur and childish and not well constructed but its so much fun. K.I.D.S is easily some of the best pop appeal frat-rap that has come out. Normally the cheesy raps and pompous egos of the respected rappers are annoying but K.I.D.S is like a well flowing party with lots of social interaction and fun games, its just the right balance of attitude and exuberance. Out of the 17 songs there is a few duds but my mind always changes about which songs suck, for three years I have ... read more
There is only so much you can achieve when you decide to fundamentally use the same instrumental over and over again.
Madison Beer has the tendency to be safe and record something catchy instead of something original. I do believe what she writes comes from the soul and bares personal experience but there is nothing remotely interesting about her telling of love and I don’t care for it. It’s not very reasonable to write about why this album is bad when al of the same criticism can ... read more
The Passenger is an engrossing story from and about a traveler viewing the sights of the city, the ocean and the stars. Atmospherically the mood is uncanny and full of tension, I can't wait to see how well this will tie into the next album rotation and what the other songs will sound like. The narrative is quite beautiful and is totally compelling with its gorgeous feather touched synth section to top it. The singing is hypnotic and drenched in a beautiful accent, I like the use of crashing ... read more
There is a weird sound in the background sometimes that sounds like someone dropping dishes on the floor downstairs and I get triggered a little every time I bring my attention to it but this song is fantastic regardless.
This song is outstanding, I genuinely think this is the most focused Big Sean has sounded ever. I don't know if its the Statik Selektah production or the fact they're on a song with Eminem but Detroit Vs. Everybody brings the best out of everyone and is my favourite hip-hop posse cut of 2014.
Stone is one of the bands most mediocre releases. It’s inconsistent and sounds really unfinished. Shine is one of the bands worst performance but the lyrics make up for so much, John Baizley doesn't sell it to me this time with his dramatic singing that is a bit too similar to Vic Fuentes. I think the escalating writing that develop as the song progresses are very emotionally dense and full of pessimistic outlooks that are depressing and sick at the same time. What I'm trying to say is ... read more
I actually think these are some of Hit-Boy’s worst beats :(
I find a lot of them don’t have the expansive ideas/punch we got on Magic 1. Sitting With My Thoughts for example is heart throbbing and is about mental strain on the young adult Nasir, but the beat is whack as shit. It contains melancholy themes but the trap production is too energetic for this song specifically. This is absolutely not the case for some instances like the Based On True Events songs which have different ... read more
I don't know if I cried to My Love Mine All Mine or if it was my hayfever but there was tears in the listening process.
Seriously some of the funnest R&B I have had the pleasure of listening to this year. Rather flawed in some departments and at a point starts to lack the epic-ness that manufactured the first half but without a doubt every song is good on here. The first three in the track list are especially my favourites and I was doing a killer performance to them in the shower this morning. Tinashe has existed but never been on my radar but now she will be after proving me wrong for overlooking her. On ... read more
I like this EP for its alternative thinking and the introduction it marks in the Shabazz Palaces catatlogue but I can't get past song of the notable let downs.
Sparkles is a song I want to point out for its one of a kind beat, its drums make this thing moody and gives me the feeling of being inside a sweat lodge full of volatile water, and I don't even know if its a guitar doing this but the flicks at the end of every second bar is haunting and fear inducing like a Luigis Mansion type beat. ... read more
Super lurky beat I'm in love. That boondocks line was cold and the physical artwork is super dope.
