You know what? You need to give this one more than a couple of listens if you really want to get it. Actually, just to be honest, after my first listen I was about to vomit with this new album, but the more I listen to it, the more I enjoy it.
I mean, it is not a perfect record, I am not going to go on that direction, is quite messy, there are many arrangements difficult to understand (mostly unnecessary) and is also easy to see many ideas was not work far beyond the chorus for many songs ... read more
Why people? Is it the lockdown? Do they needed to change that fast? This is a complicated record, but anyway, complicated moves are always better than the obvious ones.
Is this album good? Of course it is!, actually is hell of a good record, because they are a good fucking band, but they lost something here, and is one of the things that really matters, they just lost "that" thing that makes them unique. Now they are another, clearly above the average post punk band... but do not we ... read more
Possibly Toledo highest point. Away from the excessive lo-fi key of Teens of Style and still confident enough to embrace his own style with no hurries to look for new frontiers. This record is pure genius.
Lyrically exceptional. The album mix equal doses of street poetry, teenager anxiety and clever hooks. It is impossible not to enjoy every 4 to 11 minutes trip (because every song is an adventure by itself) and not to see your college self and your friends floating all over the tracks (wether ... read more
It is always amazing when you are there to see a band reaching their peak. Melophobia (2013) definitely was "Cage The Elephant" most outstanding moment.
Everything in this record is at least interesting or far beyond the average. The whole idea of the melophobia, for a band afraid of making music is provocative. The album cover goes in the same direction, showing us the band as a weird mix of influences, terrifying? Maybe. But brave enough to take risks. I personally love the idea ... read more
I discovered James Booker after the documentary "Bayou Maharajah: The Tragic Genius of James Booker" was released on 2013. With no question, an awesome (and also tragic) film but at the same time a wonderful picture of this amazing artist.
In Dr John words, James Booker was "the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced." If this description is not enough for you to go and review his records I honestly do not know what are you expecting to ... read more
For people who loved the "The Band" albums, this probably is going to be one of the good ones. Unfortunately if you are unable to get the magic from "The Band-Dylan" combo you are not going to be really impressed by this one.
This album was released just one year before "Blood On The Tracks" (1975) which probably totally overshadowed all the possible magic in this one, but on the other hand, was only preceded by "Dylan" (1973) and "Pat Garret and ... read more
The legend says that when Charly García was introduced to Bruce Springsteen, He said to Bruce “Hey, here I am The Boss”. I have no idea if the story is true or not, but it gives you a good idea about Charly. One of the most unique rock genius from South America.
“García y la Máquina de Hacer Pájaros” is one of García best incarnations. This one is a brief record, full of different moods and amazing instrumental performances. You are ... read more
If you have enjoyed the alt rock scene during the last 25 years, then for sure you should know about Alain Johannes work. The guy is all over the places, with his own band (Eleven), his solo project or his thousands of appearances (QOTSA, PJ Harvey, Chris Cornell and a long long list of etc).
After seven years of “silence” (at least as a solo artist), He finally came back with an extraordinary, honest and beautiful record. Probably the best word to define this album is ... read more
Jarvis was not even close to be the great performer He is today. The instrumentation is pretty basic and even predictable and the lyrics are on the same field, but “It” is from 1983!!! I mean the same year almost everything was sounding like crap. No super catchy synth sections, no electric drums, no happy chorus.
This guys were so far from what they finally became, but they had a totally disconnected identity, and they were sounding “Brit” a decade before it was cool ... read more
I do not know, maybe it is me, but huge passages of this album sounds like the type of music you can hear in a fancy/hipster restaurant as background music.
They are an amazing set of musicians, but this exercise was so pointless. I mean, it sounds like they have a couple of good ideas (Sleepless Nights is quite good) and they decided to fill the whole thing with whatever they already had in their "work in progress" personal folders. And after that, someone said "Hey! we need ... read more
I am here just because of the hype!
Hahaha not really, but I must admit I was curious with all the people going crazy with this album.
Lets be fair, this is a good record, very nice to listen, easy to follow, with decent instrumentation (with some very nice piano and harmonica arrangements) and with Taylor definitely showing us one of her different sides. If you go and listen "Lover" it is impossible to deny this is a big step for her and possible for her whole career, but besides ... read more
We know Dylan is about cycles and as you should expect, usually the albums that finished a cycle are not the best ones, but in the opposite corner you have the albums that opens a cycle (like this one), and that ones are usually good. Many of you can disagree with me, but I think Slow Train Coming is one of the best cycle opener records.
Yeah, you can see here some of the missteps from Street-Legal, but in general terms, most of them are certainly smaller and subtle, actually sounds like he ... read more
Just a few remarks on this one.
This new album is a big step in the right direction after "Alone" (2016). If four years ago, they were sounding super predictable, generic and almost with no energy, somehow they have found the way to put their amazing view into a new refreshing record.
We are not talking about a bunch of beginners here, this guys are a group of very experienced musicians that for some reason had lost their way. Fortunately, "Hate For Sale" sounds not only ... read more
Wow, huge disagreement between critics and users! this is always an interesting ground.
Disclaimer - I am a big Pulp fan and I think they recorded the best songs from the whole brit pop movement (I do love blur and Oasis too, but Pulp is Pulp).
Let's review this by parts.
The Concept –
The idea was to take some live recordings and add overdubs in top of them in order the make some kind of mix between the rawness of the lives albums and the neatness of the studio records. As an ... read more
OK, this is a good album. Yeah, it is true that is not a game changer, but it is also true that most of the things we listen everyday has nothing disruptive or openly innovative about it too. So I agree with most of you saying this sounds like many others things (for sure I can think in Courtney Barnett, Hop Along, Martha and probably a bunch of nineties band) but it is well done! It is uplifitng, most of the hooks are super catchy and Stokes vocals are amazingly warm.
Maybe I would have like ... read more
EDIT - Finally
Ok, here are my thoughts (maybe feelings)
Dylan is one of those artists that has accomplished almost everything. He has an extensive discography (with at least six records filling every single list about the best rock albums of all time) a Nobel prize, an Oscar and a long list of personal records. In fact there is not a single one music lover over thirty years of age that is going to doubt his relevance as a musical figure. Otherwise, I have always had the feeling that for the ... read more
Very pleasant listen. Nothing new, but it is always a pleasure to hear a band putting a lot of energy on wherever they are doing. Catchy mix of post punk, punk and some garage vibe here and there. The songs are effective, the instrumentation is simple but convincing, all the riffs are quite contagious and the vocals fits perfectly. Something is missing but I certainly do not know what exactly is (maybe it is just that you have heard dozens of bands sounding like this). Nevertheless, to be fair ... read more
What an amazing track. Is this Bob trying to explain himself? Is He trying to ask for forgiveness after a life full of achievements but also full of people that look at him with anger? He has been an intriguing figure trough his all career, thousands of reporters and dozens of books have tried to get into his secrets with no success, and maybe this is the most incredible thing about this song, He is talking to you with no hurries, just like an old friend talk to you at 4 AM trying to explain ... read more
EDIT: Sorry, this album is a 100.
Having the best song of the whole britpop movement is reason enough to give more than 90 points to this record. If you add to that, massive tracks like Mis-Shapes, Underwear, Monday Morning, Common People and F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E, then you have an absolute classic from a fantastic era.
