Blind Melon - Blind Melon
82

Great album.

Direct effective and dynamic in terms of musical approach, but be careful, if you are here searching for more "No Rain's", this album is going to be a total disappointment for you, because although "No Rain" is a larger than life single (probably one of the top five singles from 90s US music) the truth is the rest of the record does not go in that melodic and sonically uplifting direction and at the end of the day "No Rain" sound a little bit out of ... read more

Weezer - OK Human
93

Weezer is definitely a roller coaster, a bad one for some of you but with no question also a rewarding one for many others (count me in this last group).

It is true that their catalog could be quite erratic and certainly annoying at times but they always give us a couple of good records to keep believing in them. That was definitely the case for “Raditude” and “Hurley” (very poor releases), followed by “Everything Will Be Alright At The End” and “The ... read more

Bob Dylan - Modern Times
83

Much more than the Alicia Keys anecdote.

Unfortunately in order to really understand “Modern Times'' (and fully appreciate most of the critics around it), first you need to listen to “Love and Theft”. Going to the 2001 release is going to allow you to better appreciate the subtleties you’re going to find in Modern Times, because this one is indeed an album of subtleties, that clearly requires for you to sit and listen (no first impressions are good for this release). ... read more

The Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus
82

There are three things you need to listen from this record:

1. The astonishing The Who performance. Recorded just in the middle between "The Who Sell Out" and "Tommy" the band was already confident enough to deliver an act capable of showing all their strengths. Daltrey was getting to the place where he was going to put their soul as a performer in terms of presence and interpretation, Townshend always knew he was the special gifted boy from the bunch, Entwistle was getting ... read more

The Beatles - Please Please Me
97

Disclaimer: I am not a fan of the Beatles first half catalog. I have always felt that after Rubber Soul they really went where the other bands had no idea they could go at that time. In terms of lyrical poetry and creative process they really nailed it with Revolver, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album and Revolver (Yeah, sorry, Let It Be is more complicated for me).

But I have always felt the first half was too poppy, easy (six of the fourteen tracks are covers in this album), simple and ... read more

Bob Dylan - Nashville Skyline
80

Folk, electric and then country. Whoever says Dylan has always sounded the same way, is totally wrong.

After his successful and controversial electric phase it was surprising (as the electric twist also was) to see Dylan making a twist so early again. And let's say that Nashville Skyline was not only a change in his musical approach but also in his way of singing (many people say it was because he quit smoking but that is not really clear, actually it is more probable to be still related ... read more

Bob Dylan - Infidels
62

I have heard this album multiple times, believe me I have tried to be patient but I cannot stop feeling that this record is highly overrated. 87 points by the critics! Come on!!!, actually 74 from users seems a bit high too... I get it, the guy was just coming out from a period that everybody hated (even when I disagree with the degree of hate to those albums) but "Infidels" is in no way an outstanding comeback.

The obvious highlight is "Jokerman" which goes into a ... read more

Goldfinger - Never Look Back
72

Despite some obvious caveats, this is a nice return, extremely simple in terms of musical approach but also totally enjoyable as Goldfinger has always been.

The album starts strong, "Infinite" is hell of a good opener, great guitars, fast drums and a killer chorus ready to stick in your head for the next couple of hours after you play it. They manage themselves to give you a more "modern" track and at the same time sound as they usually sound. "The City" is pure ... read more

Bob Dylan - Tempest
80

The 35th studio album by Bob is a special one.

By 2012 Bob was probably reaching his lowest point in terms of vocal performance and his musical search was clearly inexistent. Maybe not the best moment to release an album.

Curiously He decided to insist on the same exhausted musical arguments he explored on Modern Times and Together Through Life and did nothing to try to find a different way to avoid his obvious troubles to sing. Actually if you only go to Tempest as a tourist you ... read more

David Byrne - American Utopia on Broadway (Original Cast Recording)
90

This is an amazing setlist in so many levels.

This is the same guy from “Stop Making Sense” taking the things a little bit further (almost in his 70s).
It does not matter if you enjoyed it American Utopia as an album (“Here” works much better as an opener than a close track for sure). The concept here (as the usual thing from him) it is about taking the limits between studio songs and live performance a bit far away, making of all this just one thing, some type of ... read more

Eddie Vedder - Matter Of Time / Say Hi
70

Clearly different from PJ sound, but in some way still trapped in “Into The Wild” type of vibe (specially Say Hi). “Matter Of Time” is a step forward imo, I like the simplicity of the approach, quite Elton John for moments. Nothing to blow your mind, but pleasant enough to wait for wherever He is working on.

Gorillaz - Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez
89

Edit:
Gorillaz has always been about to create a place where the things could be taken one step beyond the traditional boundaries. At their beginning centered in the idea of the animated rock band and nowadays being some type of a collaborative and challenging entity where the main driver responsible to mix every different ingredient at times could be equivocal and difficult to catch.
In this opportunity the band borrowed the TV jargon to create their seventh long play. There are no more ... read more

Bob Dylan - Shadows in the Night
68

This is Dylan just getting into the healing process he needed.

I know there are a lot of people who think "Tempest" was a great record, but at least for me it is just a regular album, performing the same musical approach Dylan was doing for the last 20 years (challenging level zero) which also gave us one of Bob's poorer vocal performances in decades (which with all the love I have for the guy, let's agree it is not a little thing to say).

"Shadows In The Night" was the ... read more

Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan
74

There are a bunch of things that make Bob Dylan's studio debut a remarkable album without being exceptional. This record has no huge singles, no songs to really put in your "top ten Dylan's songs" but is full of little hints pointing to what was going to happen later.

The first remarkable thing is Bob's obvious engagement with the recording, you can hear how he is trying to give his best, his guitar skills are not amazing but they are actually quite above the average, his harmonica ... read more

Will Butler - Generations
82

Something must be really good with this album. The lyrics are incredibly simple, the song structure (and progression) is quite predictable, the melodic approach has nothing groundbreaking and Butler's voice is just ok, but for some reason almost the entire set of songs is ridiculously enjoyable.

He is giving us this set of indie folk pop songs with a touch of synth electronica bive which is quite average, but he sound so honest in every single track, it is like hearing a friend sharing his ... read more

Protomartyr - Ultimate Success Today
88

It is amazing when you have your own identity but no matter what, you are still trying to go for something else. This band is certainly incredible in that perspective. Since day one, they have pushed their barriers to finally reach the place where we are today. Listening to this superb record, full of poetry, dark, claustrophobic and reverberant landscapes but also totally impregnated by different (and new) sound colours is definitely a gift.

Ultimate success Today, has all the tricks we ... read more

Deftones - Ohms
55

If you loved them before this record, certainly you are going to be extremely happy (as I can see from tons of people) with "Ohms", if you did not like them before this album, then you are not going to start loving them now, because there is nothing new here, nothing.

Deftones was one of the bands who brought something really different and captivating twenty years ago, and believe me, at that time, they were really something special, I mean nobody sounded like them, they were like ... read more

Bob Dylan - Oh Mercy
71

Nothing in life is by itself, everything is measure against something. I mean, "today is a very nice day"... probably compare with the day before, or "this is a shitty year"... probably compare with almost any other year in the history of human existence (better laugh than cry). The same happens with "Oh Mercy" which was praised as a fantastic record back in 1989, but again, compared with all the garbage Dylan released during the eighties and specially after ... read more

Patti Smith - Horses
97

I must find the time to write about this record. For now I am just going to say that She is bigger than music.
This is the type of record where you can talk about art.

Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker
96

Being aware that you are probably facing the end of the road could be an intimidating and powerful driving force for any of us, but when an artist like Leonard Cohen is challenged in the same way, the outcome is superb.

Cohen last album is not a death ode as many of you could probably think, actually, in my view it is totally the opposite. This is a beautiful and simple manifesto, which only tries to celebrates a handful of the most appreciated memories deeply kept in Cohen's soul and at the ... read more
