The thing with this new album (and with most of her albums) is not related to the dance tribute or how well she sings or how incredibly produced is everything.
The amazing stuff with Beyoncé is that even if her type of music is not the type of music you enjoy the most, it is impossible to deny how incredible well though and executed is everything she does.
This is not the music I actually enjoy it but here I am, fall at her feet.
Don´t miss this record.

Weyes Blood - And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow

80 > 83

Strong Aimee Mann, Joni Mitchell and (surprising not surprising) Father John Misty vibes. And I am not saying it as something bad, actually maybe that's the main thing that makes me comeback to this album.
Not necessary to mention how well produced it is and how beautifully she managed herself to deliver her vocals during the whole freaking album, but with no question is part of what makes this release so special.
Not my usual cup of tea but yeah, there is something truly special ... read more

Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around

It has been a long travel for me to get to partially understand Cash work. I am still on it, but I feel I can connect with this record.

Of course Rubin’s production helps to make this record more friendly for the ones which like me where raised listening music completely unrelated to the country music but there is something in Cash (tired?) voice that makes this album an special one.

Not everything works in the album (In My Life is not a fortunate version imo) but for the most is ... read more

Niños Del Cerro - Suave Pendiente

This is so good.
Atmospheric mixed with a touch of shoegaze, post rock and maybe space rock but without being trapped in any or those styles.
Less direct than the previous album but way better as q whole, the way the tracks are written is elegant and gave them a lot of space to grow and breath.
Rhythm section is awesome (“Mamire” is such an amazing track) and Franz Mesko feat in “Esta Enorme Distancia” is simply perfect.
A grower.

Richard Dawson - The Ruby Cord

Seriously?
Haha, come on. This is sooooo self indulgent.
For sure there are great passages here and there, but in terms of song structure this is a huge mess. Interesting and different with no question, but unfortunately “different” is not always the same as “good”.
And please, the vocal performance. I am aware we live in times where there are no standards, but we still know what is a decent delivery and what is not… and this is not. Maybe if someone else would ... read more

Kid Kapichi - Here's What You Could Have Won
85

I have totally missed this one and now I found it looking for possible great misses while I was working in my end of the year list.

A raw mix between Viagra Boys, Arctic Monkeys (Humbug era… oh the good old days) a touch of Death From Above 1979 and a bunch of nice riffs. Count me in!

I definitely like it but it is a bit messy I must say, kind of too many ideas for one record. It works but at the ends makes me want to know which one it is the real personality of this band which in some ... read more

Bandalos Chinos - El Big Blue

The more I listen to this record, the more I like it.

It is well recorded, alternates different moods and most of the songs are ridiculously catchy. It is funny how here I can hear a bit of Babasónicos, something from Teleradio Donoso and even a touch of Jamiroquai and everything seems to match in a very natural way. Lyrically it is a bit silly at times but for the most it works fine.

Nice synth pop songs to enjoy, plenty of good old pop ballads and “Una Propuesta” which I ... read more

The Bobby Lees - Bellevue

With the obvious exception of the massive bass lines, reminds me a lot of the early White Stripes (the rawest form of them) and I love it.
With The Chats álbum probably the best punk I have heard this year. Critics score is totally justified.

Meat Wave - Malign Hex

I will try to find some time to write something better about this album, but for now, just giving you guys the alert that this seems to be an unfortunately overlooked release.
Kind of in the punk/hardcore corner, with a lot of energy, raw feeling, some nice atmospheres here and there and more than a couple of very elegant moves. Interesting and versatile ride.
Check on it, at least for me was a nice surprise.

Arctic Monkeys - The Car

Sorry guys, I am happy you are enjoying this album but no, this is not a great album.
In terms of music for sure is spotless, elegant, nice arrangements, well produced. I got it.
Lyrically is clever as the Arctic Monkeys have always been (that’s a point for Turner).
But in terms of vocal performance is where this album (and the previous one) has huge issues. It is incredible flat. It is not even the vocal quality of Turner (which has never been extremely impressive) it is that there is no ... read more

Titus Andronicus - The Will to Live

I must recognize most of the time I enjoy TA albums. They have this classic rock guitar approach that without being outstanding at least for me it is easy to listen to.
With that said, this release left some kind of a bitter taste in my mouth. They are doing what they know the best, classic rock hooks, nice choruses and a lot of guitars, but something is missing here and after many listens and a quick comeback to their majestic “The Most Lamentable Tragedy” I have come to the ... read more

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Cool It Down

I am conflicted about this album. I was quite hype about it and the singles were amazing. Spitting Of The Edge… has some The Cure vibes that I definitely love, something like the beginning of Plainsong, atmospheric but huge and underwhelming at the same time while Burning is pure extasis, with elegant orchestration but also reckless as goes through different mood (that bridge is wonderful) until it ends.
I don’t know what happens with the rest of the album but something does not ... read more

Arctic Monkeys - Body Paint

I hope Turner is aware he is making the Arctic Monkeys his supporting band. Since “Tranquility Base Hotel…” It is all about him, his flow and his increasingly annoying way to phrase every single word. Pure ego. Strike two.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!

I was there when Fever To Tell hit the world and it was something great. For many years many of us went repeating again and again how fantastic was that álbum and probably many of us still feel some kind of bound to that record, because it was hell of a good work.
With that said, the truth is that no matter how much we loved “Fever”, it was one more great record of a bunch of guitar driven great records from the early 00s. For sure with some unique colors but not really a ... read more

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Mosquito

The only problem with this record is the cover (which is amazingly awful). For the rest this album is huge, grandiloquent, noisy, emotional at times and dark when it has to be dark. Step back my ass guys. This is great.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Eddie
50

Any tribute to EVH is a well receive tribute because He was huge and every artist should at least try to tribute him. The problem is that as He was so huge most of the tributes have the risk of not being good enough for his figure, and this particular one unfortunately falls incredible short. The song improves to the end thanks to Frusciante solo but it is already too late to save the track, the first half is painfully flat.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
95

The jazz album non jazz listeners use to listen and also the best selling jazz album of all time.
For sure those two facts don’t say much about the musical virtues of the album but with no question talks about how universal it is. And that’s a lot.

Not the first modal jazz record as many people loves to say (Miles himself was doing it before this record indeed), but definitely the one that installed modal jazz as “the new way to go” (o como decimos en español, ... read more

The Chats - Get Fucked
90

Something between the early Buzzcocks and the Pistols (…and Emperor of The Beach is pure Iggy Stooge). That’s what I was asking for my Friday!

I don’t need for them to reinvent the punk, I just need for them to kick hard, fast and fun and they do it. I will keep listening this one…

Pink Floyd - The Wall
98

Ok, you all know the story, Waters was in tour and at some point spat at a fan face because he was getting too close to the stage. Then he talked with Ezrin and a psychiatrist about the terrible sensation he was having regarding the need or desire to build a wall between the band and the audience.
This terrible situation led Waters to write one of the greatest (of not the best) rock operas of all time… and let me tell you that being a huge The Who fan as I am, this is not easy to accept. ... read more

Best album released since 2000
Casablancas singing like he does not care about it (and with that bloody addictive effect in his voice!!!).
Valensi and Hammond Jr filling every possible space.
Nikolai and Moretti adding the precise amount of groove to make it raw but also danceable.
It is impossible not to hear the CBGB DNA flowing like a spell through all the amazing songs included in this album.
It is fun, fast and effective. And believe me, we were desperately needing something like this in ... read more
