just saw this for the first time and the score is SOOOO GOOD OH MY GOD (the movie is amazing too lmao)
also kiki might just be my favorite ghibli protagonist now that i think about it
One of the most forward thinking pop records of all time. Even to this day, Vespertine still manages to impress and astound me in every facet. Not a moment is wasted here - not a single musical concept feels unexplored or underdeveloped, which for Björk is pretty rare. Whether it be the breathtaking string sections, the angelic and heavenly choruses, or the microbeats Björk incorporates throughout this record that all combine to give it a sound all its own. The mixing here is so ... read more
Take it from the girl that listened to 2 hours of a lady playing the piano and gave it an 8.5/10, this really isn't anything all that special. Evgeni is certainly very talented when it comes to the piano and I'll give him that, but outside of that this is just the same as all other piano based classical works? How or why people are pulling something deeper out of this is something I'm yet to understand. To me, this is just like every other album of its kind, certainly not some work of modern ... read more
some decent instrumentals and sections of songs here and there but... wow
Sons of Kemet manage to do a lot with a little on "Your Queen is a Reptile", managing to pull together a collection of songs so energetic, lively, and exciting, while also managing to stick to their roots in a way that I find to be both parts impressive and engaging. Of all the jazz records I've listened to, this might be the one that's made me move the most, it's just such an exhilarating and energetic record the whole way through. Jazz is a genre that historically has thrived off of ... read more
Matthäus-Passion feels effortlessly brilliant, moving with a natural ease that feels significantly less planned out and rehearsed as it could've felt. Every single singer here is incredibly gifted, too, and having such pristine recording quality only helps let this record's brilliance flourish. The several parts presented here make Matthäus-Passion feel more like an epic of sorts than an actual album that you just listen to regularly, and while it is undeniably impressive on a ... read more
Really calming and cozy, but weirdly enough, I was minutes away from passing out going into it but now I feel fine. Either way, I need my rest I'm going to go sleep now lol
An absolutely wonderful live album from Johnny Cash, At Folsom Prison shows Johnny Cash performing some songs.. at a prison, what a surprise! A lot of the songs here (if not all of them) in some way relate to living a life behind bars, and hearing Cash interact with the audience throughout was always a treat. He somehow managed to make an environment as depressing and bleak as a prison feel bursting with life and excitement, and it's no surprise that the inmates, and Cash himself, had a blast. ... read more
What's ultimately killing Beach Bunny is their lack of variation or ambition, and it sucks considering how much I like this band and how much I enjoyed some of their past projects. Ultimately though, they've just fallen into this formula of having standard, generic indie rock instrumentals, angsty female vocal leads, and the same fucking lyrics about boy problems. Move on! Progress, find a new topic to sing about, just do ANYTHING that's not writing about this exact same breakup scenario that ... read more
Cutesy, harmless country pop for 20-something rich girls with tans to listen to and say "Wow, she's just like me!"
M83 takes shoegaze into a much more electronic direction on Dead Cities. While this isn't the most unique concept in the world since you have artists like Sweet Trip that have done the exact same thing, I personally would take a Dead Cities over a V:D:C any day, and it's because I think M83 manages to pull a much more enjoyable and polished sound out of these ideas. The noisiness is rarely overbearing, and the synth work has aged wonderfully moving nearly 20 years into the future. Every song ... read more
This was a fun time! Yeah, even though this probably wasn't the effect it was meant to have, I couldn't help but feel kind of nostalgic while listening through this again. As others have said before, for me it always felt like there's been this odd sort of narrative that ties all of this music together, and this is a great example of that, seeing as how every song on here is in some way connected. This doesn't blow me away as much as it does for some people, but I'd be lying if I said this ... read more
I was pretty surprised to learn that to this day no one has added St. Terrible to this site, so now that all their music is up here to rate and review, I figured instead of just throwing out scores based on what I remember, I'd revisit this band after about a year of not listening to them. For a bit of context as to what this EP is, I think it's important to remember what it started out as. On St. Terrible's YouTube channel, around a year ago, they released one 11 minute music video to their ... read more
Joanna Newsom's debut! And a pretty great one at that! Yeah, I was honestly way more impressed with this than I expected to be, even if it is probably her weakest release to date. There's a lot of great songs on here, and to be honest this record's only real issues were its technical limitations. Obviously, since this was her debut, the production here is a bit iffy, some of the vocal mixing could range from off sounding to straight up horrendous, and the production has a rougher edge to it ... read more
We love a queen that sits down at the piano and doesn't stop playing for 2 hours!
When judging works, such as this one, it can be a particularly daunting and difficult task to pin down what exactly makes said albums work, and what makes you love them. That's the issue I faced and am still currently facing trying to write about this record, because at its core, this is a 2 hour album comprised of nothing but piano, yet there's something so oddly endearing and engaging about it to me. Classical ... read more
Really enjoyed this one! It's a nice mashup of legitimate jazz rap songs with upbeat instrumental cuts. I do wish this was a bit shorter since my dumb monkey brain can only pay attention for so long before I start to drift off to other things (thanks internet), but regardless I had a good time with this one. It's fun, the opener is absolutely fantastic, and it's just a good time all around.
