I understand why this project doesn’t speak to the base fandom of this group, but personally I really enjoy it. I would like to see a return to their roots and delve into that side of their creativity more. That said, this really is good. It’s sort of similar to comparing Black MIDI to Fleetwood Mac. There is a lot of good here intermixed with a lot of what I see as inconsistency of quality and direction from the perspective of a whole album. I really like what I hear individually on each of the songs, but the whole feels disjointed at many points. I’m excited to hear more from this band and what the produce in the future.
Metal and psych melded into something really cool and fun. The finish is stronger than the start, which is something I admire, as it could have easily dragged on.
