Formed with the addition of drummer Glen Power, three-piece band the Script may have become an overnight success in the U.K. and Ireland with their debut single "We Cry," but their self-titled album bears the imprint of their internship in California, a meticulously and well-scripted (excuse the pun) blend of smooth soul and radio rock in the mould of Maroon 5 and OneRepublic.

Dublin’s The Script is one of those bands that will polarise opinion no matter how hard it tries. It goes without saying that music this polished and melodic will sell by the bucket load and top charts throughout the world. On the other hand, a lot of self-respecting music fans will avoid this album like the plague.

Typical, simplistic radio-pop that borrows more ideas than it invents.

The Guardian
Three Dublin boys from the wrong side of town, who find soul, a purpose in life and become A-listed at both Radio's 1 and 2. No, that's not the pitch for a sequel to The Commitments but a brief outline of the Script's progress.

The Independent
The epitome of modern formulaic pop.

The Script's self-titled debut was one of the CDs I owned as a kid. It's a pretty nostalgic listen because of that, but I have to admit that this album hasn't aged well. It sounds really dated to the late 2000s and is really derivative of bands like Coldplay, Keane, or The Fray. It doesn't really have the tunes to make up for that. Most of these songs have really weak choruses and instrumentals.

Not all of the songs are duds though. Breakeven is a classic at this point. The Man Who Can't Be ... read more

OK, they started shouting "I wanna feel something unreal" and they used it as the main slogan of their latest musical, campaign but be aware, there's nothing to feel here.
So, leave them alone to feed their obsesion and move on quickly.

The Script do not have great ratings on here but idgaf. I relistened to this album the other day thinking I wouldn't like it that much since I liked it back when I had fairly unshaped music taste as a 12 year old, but I was pleasantly surprised by how easily I was able to get into it. Bass is pumping on most of these, especially in the first half. Soulful vocals, a tasteful amount of rapping, good Irish sadness

I came for some nostalgia with Breakeven. Wow this album sucks. Corny writing, hit or big miss vocals, average instrumentation = bad music. Don’t let nostalgia cloud your judgement on this one

Though very popular, this record shows that numbers won't decide how some records perform.

This album is... not really emotional in a sense, but i like how it expresses love in different contexts, whether it be longing for someone to come back, or might be already loving someone.

Fantastic record, too overheated to explain even more.
