After drifting into a territory that no one seemed to welcome with Electric Circus, Kanye has helped bring Com full circle. Album number seven puts Common‘s catalogue on a level that few can fuck with. If forever is immortality in this game, Common has found it.
It's nice to hear DJ Premier's signature scratching on "The Game," but Forever could benefit from more sonic curveballs. Common and West have found a style that works, commercially and creatively. That makes it the perfect time to start taking more risks.
Finding Forever is a winner, lean and mean and without a minute of wasted space.
Finding Forever ... is Common's snapshot of hip-hop's awkward middle age -- an album that is neither here nor there.
Dullness has always been a problem for Common, and a couple of snoozers, including "So Far to Go," invest too much in his good intentions and not enough in the music.
The rest of it ... is soulful and intelligent where 'intelligent' is not exclusive to 'good beats and rhymes.' Which is what it's all about.
The album includes a handful of well-placed and effectual guest contributors including Bilal, Dwele, Lily Allen, Common's dad, and the one and only Primo. Still, it's a shade less satisfying than Be.
Finding Forever is something to be admired, even if it is uneven.
Common and Kanye West continue the sound of 2005's solid comeback Be with a follow-up that attempts to inject it with a bit of Dilla-fied Soulquarians style.

Common's five album run from Resurrection to Be is beyond legendary. Ressurection is an all killer, no filler album packed with great rapping and great beats. One Day It'll All Make Sense, I believe, was the birth of the Common we know and love today, and showcased a more mature Common with more serious subject matter. The rapping is amazing once again and backed by great production just like nearly every album before this one.
