I'm already incredibly biased when it comes to Backxwash so just take this with a grain of salt but....OHHHHH HELL YES.

Backxwash takes the "Witchhop" label and darker themes of her last album to create her most haunting and devious sounding album yet. From the cries of "oh god no!" In the instrumental to shouting how she fucks with black magic, it sounds like the soundtrack to a trans 70s pulp horror film. This is some of her best beats yet with electric guitars, dungeon ... read more

7.8 - Great

Yup. I missed this one too.

This album, in one word, is brutal. The instrumentals are insanely dark and grimy, which can be expected from a horrorcore album. However, BackxWash has a very distinct style, that is very interesting and unique, which helps to set her apart from other people in the field. I really dig her vintage style and sampling, and I love how the production can become so hard hitting. BackxWash herself also has a super harsh delivery, which can go super hard along ... read more

With huge echoing drum patterns and deep submerssive rounded bass throughout, this new Backxwash albums f**ks so goddamn hard.

Montreal based, Backxwash really broke out with this album. Myself, residing in Toronto, know how hard it is for domestic artists to get their voice out in this country, but with a voice and sound like this, it was surely hard to keep a lid on it. The driving fragmented sound clips on each track progress more and more song by song, giving a murky muddy broken earphone ... read more

The soundtrack of the Gasper Noe's first full black cast film.

Best and consistent production yet this year on a Hip Hop album. The crazy and eerie feeling throughout the compact 22-minute album is amazing.

This album is one of the most interesting hip-hop releases I’ve heard this year. The production is fantastic, Backxwash’s performances are great, and I really like the aesthetic that this album provides. At times it doesn’t feel fully fleshed out, but that doesn’t really affect how enjoyable this album is.

'God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It' remains one of the most impressively produced horrorcore hip hop projects of the decade so far. In preparation for her upcoming record, I wanted to revisit her last three albums. This one I especially haven't heard in a long while, probably since it was taken off of streaming. It's mind-blowingly creative and is full of beats that continue to make my skin crawl.

This album really has been sticking with me. I’ve been going back to it a lot. More than any other Backxwash album in fact

This is awesome, but at 22 mins, unfortunately a bit unfulfilling. A good chunk of the album is being taken up by two separate interludes and those extended monologues. This project could definitely use more content for how passionate, personal and creative it gets.

Backxwash's energy is awesome. For a 'horrorcore' album, this album creates an atmosphere that is drawn up from some contradictory styles that works together nicely (i.e. trap & metal), but also features a few more memorable ... read more

EDIT: I am going through some records I marked as my favorites during this year and... WOW! This brief but overwhelming album is one of those you can not miss (please do not do it), it is exceptionally superb. What a triumph!

OMG what a great album!!! (I know God has nothing to do with it but I needed to exclaim)

This is what you get when your ideas about what you want to do are totally clear but besides that you are full of passion and talent. Ashanti Mutinta knows perfectly what is going to ... read more

The fucking production holy shit. In general this is one of the better hip hop releases of the year to me, just because of how hard hitting it all is, which is aided by the “short but sweet” nature of it. Loving this thing a lot.

Standout: Into the void
Favs: God has nothing to do with this leave him out of it, Redemption, Hell’s Interlude, Black Magic, Adolescence
least fav: Amen

God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It is unrelenting hiphop-punk-metal-industrial-horrorcore brutality, with infectious hooks and compelling production & writing.

Backxwash dropped not only an EP but also an LP. The guy knows how to make an entrance with an album so cruel and brimming with hellfire throughout. Nobody in hip hop or metal alike can hold a pen to the style Backxwash is able to do in both fields and their work this year is a testament to that.

This album WILDIN. When spells came on and I realized this album would have some variety, I started to come around. End all be all it’s singular and great!

great ~ from the moment that creepy ass sample started playing, i knew i was in for an insane experience. and backxwash does not disappoint for a single second. it's intense, loud, and cool as hell. plus sampling is used on this project in a really cool way. and her production is also really good. (and i actually like the interludes, i feel like they could be in a scary movie)

for a horrorcore album, god has nothing to do with this leave him out of it does what it needs to do, but for an enjoyable album, it needs some work. i didn't really like the delivery here, even if the instrumentals were decent half the time. it's certainly intense, yeah, but i thought it was underwhelmingly so. favorite song here was "heaven's interlude," which was a stunningly good use of a sample from eraserhead. "spells" was pretty decent, too.

So I like this project. I'm very much anticipating what Backxwash is coming out with this year, and I think her upfront lyricism, thematic abilities, abrasive production and status comes forward quite well.

I actually am happy that this project exists. I very much adore her bravery and willingness to put forth heavy-handed material. How GHNTDWTLHOOI channels anger, reluctance, consciousness... I very much adore this project.

I don't think it's perfect in the sense that I can completely accept ... read more

This album goes hard. I was immediately intrigued as soon as I heard the terrifying sample on the first track. The production stands out on the bangers, like Black Magic and Amen, while Backxwash's raw lyrics paired with a chilling delivery make the short album feel somewhat satisfying, if not conclusive.

Thrilling

The way the samples can be used here can be chilling. Such a consistent album, not one track really "misses" here. Great ass rapping filled with raw emotion on this album. Very intense but enjoyable album. PLEASE LISTEN!

Best Tracks: GHNTDWTLHOOI, Black Magic, Into the Void*, Amen, Redemption
Worst Track: Adolescence

Great lines all around with cutting edge production, my favorite being : "You lost a son but you gained a daughter" Despite all the horrific imagery, there's still hints of vulnerability.

An execration towards traditionalism. Full of pure resentment for all the torment it has caused, while contrasting its supposed freedom with that of the devil's. The quest for healing and forgiveness.

A bluntly powerful, deeply personal project. Backxwash is a very, very special artist.

POLARIS MUSIC PRIZE WINNERS DEEP DIVE: 2020
This shit bump hard at the sacrificial ritual!
I never would've suspected that an album this blatantly threatening and uncommercial could've won such a prestigious music award, but, considering 2020 was the dumpster fire year that it was, it's not that surprising. Nice to see some industrial recognition amongst all the other winners of the Polaris

Backxwash really goes for creating an atmosphere on this project with tonnes of luscious reverb and fuzzy noise, once again with the amazing production of a typical Backxwash Projects and the self reflective lyrics as well. I would say it is lest focused than other Backxwash albums and misses a little of the drive, but that is a minor minor criticism. ALSO THE NIN - REPTILE SAMPLE IN INTO THE VOID GOES SO HARD.
