With Bravado, he's traded the midnight black blast of industrial punk for the neon and vapor trail-lit blight of the dancefloor, and the results are no less compelling.
What makes Bravado work is that it refuses to rely only on humor, so even when a joke might not land, any given track can still be commended for its versatile and unique musicianship. And at the times when you can’t even tell whether he’s joking or not, there’s a tantalizing air of mystery to the whole endeavor.
It’s hard to imagine anyone loving every moment on such a perversely disparate record but it’s equally hard to imagine anyone being less than dazzled.
Australia's Kirin J Callinan delivers one of this year's most colorfully eccentric pop records with Bravado.
Bravado at its best doesn’t just make note-perfect pastiches, but creates pop master-strokes that even beat out the heroes Callinan worships/laughs at.
Callinan has a knack for pushing buttons, but it sounds like he's just mashing the keyboard on Bravado.
i shall be one of the nicer written reviews for this album and say that this album is very funny and goofy :3
Kirin is a weird guy but at least has a little bit of personality and some talent: don't write him off just yet, he could probably make some good albums!
EDIT (40 to 75): There's no goddamn way I gave this a 40... I don't love this, but honestly, a good chunk of this record is kinda solid, it does have really dumb moments, but I can let go of them in exchange for the actual solid ones.
It was all... bravado?
I've listened to this album a handful of times, and every time the album ends, I end up disliking it even more... but at this point, I'm not even sure if that's the point of the whole thing.
I understand the fact that the whole album ... read more
Weird album. Did not enjoy it. I'm not opposed to weird music or anything but Kirin is just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks.
I find it so beautiful & honestly kind of poetic how the screams on big enough are what opened the world’s eyes up to the genius of Kirin J Callinan, as well as it being what brought him his biggest wave of popularity yet…sometimes you need to scream to be heard.
Imagine if he could sing.
