So I’ve finally listened to the entire thing and I’m astounded at how effective this is at conveying the degradation of the mind just through sound. Not a bad album by any means and I felt pretty chilled throughout. Just not very memorable or standout imo.
After two years of trying to sort my shit out, this album made me feel like it's time to come back.
Fantano gave it a 10 so I was practically obliged to check this out, half expecting another pretentious art-pop record that sounds like all the others and one I'd label overrated. Whilst I don't love this release, I definitely like it and understand the acclaim as it really has some moments. Unlike most albums in this genre, I listen to, the tracks actually seem to have some variety, coupled with a strong vocal performance and fantastic grooves, giving way to some really memorable tracks. Being The Mountain Goats, it's solid musically, but lacks the memorability and sticking power of they're last record, ultimately leaving me underwhelmed and bored.
