ooh baby

Welcome back to my first full-length review since forever ago, I’m back! Not really. I don’t have any big plans on being active, but I can’t get music out of my life, so I figured, why not talk about it? Being a dumb piece of shit means I likely won’t finish this review, and that’s OK. In the meantime, I’ll just see what comes out- write what you’re passionate about, right? Anyway.

I’m not cultured or insane enough to listen to the other dozen (more?) interpretations of this piece, but I know for sure that this one is pretty damn amazing. I’m a sucker for minimalism, and this hit THE sweet spot between engaging and meditative, to this point where it was almost trance-like to listen to.

I really wish i could post this without having to ruin the review box of some album be here we are. Hi, two people that will see this! doing good?

Jens Lekman - The Linden Trees Are Still in Blossom

This has been on repeat for the past few weeks- one of the most underrated and under-recognized albums of last year.

Jens Lekman has a good singing voice, one that sounds very objectively pretty and nice, but the Baroque/Sunshine Pop presented here fits him marvelously in a way that not many people do. His songwriting skills are acceptable, but they're heightened drastically by his firm grasp on melody and chrous. He KNOWS when to make everything blow up, he knows when a song needs to be ... read more

A completely useless commentary on our society, all too pretentious and overbearing. It brought me no pleasure aside from my constant scoffing at this fool’s moronic conclusions on the human condition. They’re all idiots, I say, all idiots. This place has gone mad. I’m going to buy me another gun- can’t be too safe.

CATCHING UP WITH THE CLASSICS: ROCK #9/20

ground control to minor tom

A lot of the artists I’ve explored in the dives have had major nostalgia factors that made me appreciate them more (or less, depending). It could come from anything- my King Crimson experience was nostalgic because it was one of the first /mu/ albums I had grown attached to, while music like The Beatles and Pink Floyd go back even further in my childhood and life- they were the music of my parents and grandparents, ... read more

[Outdated review! I still enjoy this album quite a bit but it is no longer my pick for their best]

Quick update before I begin the review: I’m shortening this series down to just ten albums per genre. Yeah, I know, that means that some people’s favorites are cut out, but goddamn I was an absolute idiot thinking I would be able to write 500+ longform reviews for albums that didn’t necessarily need/deserve one, and thus I’m ... read more

CATCHING UP WITH THE CLASSICS: ROCK #6/20

Magic is hard to capture.

Isn’t it? I know I find it to be. Even as a casual listener, I know it’s incredibly difficult, nearly impossible, to capture emotion, life, and joy into a piece of art. Many bands and musicians resort to conventional tactics- gradual builds to huge explosions of strings and guitars, crashing vocals that reward the audience with the payoff they’ve all been waiting for. It’s amazing to hear ... read more

Fuck it. Spamming with reviews saying you won't listen to it is a great motivator to make this mf actually listen. See y'all in nine hours, I guess.

EDIT #1: I'm 20 songs in, about a tenth of the way there. It's literally just Five Easy Hot Dogs but long lmao. Pray for me

Metro boomin make it boom ๐Ÿ˜น๐Ÿ˜น๐Ÿ˜น

Aside from the strange resemblance I noticed between this project and legendary trap producer Metro Boomin’s latest album, there’s barely anything I’ve had up until this point to say about Pink Floyd. They’re unquestionably one of the biggest and most critically acclaimed bands ever, success and accolades being succeeded only by The Beatles- and even that’s debatable. I haven’t ... read more

CATCHING UP WITH THE CLASSICS: ROCK #1/20

All right, time to explain the series.

Basically, it's exactly what the title specifies. It came from a commonly thrown around phrase I've seen time and time again: "You don't have enough context to get into this." Even though I've listened to nearly 600 albums, there's still a lot of different styles and genres I feel as though I don't have enough background to fully appreciate. So, I figured, why not give myself a taste of every major ... read more

so creepy, so wacky ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Honestly, it's hard to feel anything with this one, especially knowing how potent and emotional their work in the past was. I don't relly know how to explain it, but this just feels.... Lite. Xiu Xiu Lite. That's what this album feels like.

I love this album's concept and sound, don't get me wrong. It's great. Death Industrial is such a cool genre, and combined with Dark Ambient, that SHOULD'VE given us a unqiue experience filled with twists and turns, wrath and ... read more

The Symphony No. 5 in C minor of Ludwig van Beethoven, Op. 67, was written between 1804 and 1808. It is one of the best-known compositions in classical music and one of the most frequently played symphonies, and it is widely considered one of the cornerstones of western music. First performed in Vienna's Theater an der Wien in 1808, the work achieved its prodigious reputation soon afterward. E. T. A. Hoffmann described the symphony as "one of ... read more

Gorillaz are a band it’s safe to say I don’t really care for. I didn’t like Demon Dayz at all, and Plastic Beach was only slightly better. A beast, so hideous that not even the most low-down criminal could stare at its face, waits in the dark. What it has been waiting for we hope never comes, because the awe-inspiring horror one receives from gazing into its eyes is beyond comparison. Legend says that its teeth are so sharp, the creature can’t lick its lips in fear of slicing his own tongue off. "Oh, a 20/100? Really? That’s the number you’re going with? For ILDMFLY? I just want to understand the galaxy-sized leap in logic it takes to listen to a record like this — dripping in experimentation, emotional depth, and boundary-pushing production — and say, “Yes, this is objectively bad music.” Either you’ve never listened to an album without a trap hi-hat in your life, or you’re willfully missing the point because you don’t like what JPEGMAFIA represents: innovation that refuses to bow to mainstream taste. Let’s start with something simple: JPEGMAFIA is the GOAT. That’s not just hype, that’s reality. Who else is chopping up samples like he’s disassembling the American dream and reassembling it with duct tape and spite?"

"And please don’t take this as a specific attack on you, or as a disagreement with some points you make! But your whole argument doesn’t seem founded upon much, and that’s an issue when talking about such broad and complex issues- side note: whether or not you see a cultural issue with Ian’s music or not saying “stop supporting this waste of time people call music” ends the review on a pretty close-minded note- “I don’t find enjoyment in this” is infinitely better than “you are wrong for enjoying music like this” and even if that’s not what you meant that’s certainly how it comes across"
On Calvin's review of ian - Goodbye Horses
"wanting more variety but it seems odd to be so pissed off at what is at worst an album that is just a standard 2024 trap release. Your points about the music industry being nicer and more willing to promote white artists over black ones is understandable but it rubs me the wrong way hearing incorrect points being made, and if your goal is to make a generalized argument for systematic racism in rap than relying on misconstrued data is not the best way to go."
On Calvin's review of ian - Goodbye Horses
""I will continuously call out Ian and other artists in the same vein that continue to waste away the hope I have that good music will prevail in the Hip Hop landscape instead of the formulaic and repetitive garbage that has infested the charts for a while now." Pop music has been formulaic and engineered to be commercially successful since recorded music was a thing! I understand wanting more artistic integrity or variety on the pop charts, even within Ian's lane of Rap music, but the bottom line is that most releases of any given genre will not be ones you particularly care for, and the amount of run-of-the-mill songs that are on the charts any given time is very very high just due to them being made to sell ๐Ÿคท again I don't fault you for"
On Calvin's review of ian - Goodbye Horses
""Rap is inherently a black genre born and raised, and yet decade after decade since the music broke into the scene it has unsurprisingly always been headed by white artists." No? At least, saying "always" is a vast generalization and even saying "most of the time" or "sometimes" is too generous, imo. The vast majority of best-selling hip-hop has always been from black people, and it seems in bad faith to bend that fact in order to strengthen your argument, even if you weren’t doing it intentionally- in fact, your whole argument about Ian’s appeal partially coming from white people uncomfortable with listening to black musicians is really a small minority of listeners, kind of disproportionate to the weight you give the issue in the review"
