very excited to see whats to come from Ugly, this EP shows a lot of promise
Olivia Rodrigo but she’s a lead of a 90’s grunge band (oh and also Kurt Kobain’s wife)
‘GIZMO’ is an okay shoegazey indie rock album, i don’t have any outstanding issues with it, it simply didn’t wow me in any sense - it felt like it was missing something. it could have done with some more creative drums, maybe some fuzzier guitar melodies or just anything to pinch my attention vocally. It was solid, but didn’t do anything to keep me engaged throughout.
was a big fan of the more screamo tracks on the front end, but it levels out at a really solid project on the whole too
Sunny Day Real Estate are back with an excellent live album, showcasing that they’ve still got it, even 30 years after the original release of ‘Diary’
(Oh and Novum Vetus is amazing)
[re-review 4th May 2024, 77 ~> 80]
‘Repeater’ is D.C band Fugazi’s debut album and is seen as an early landmark in Post-Hardcore and Punk, but it didn’t quite fill those big boots for me. I’m a fan of Post-Hardcore and Punk, so i enjoyed it, but i think it’s earliness in the Post-Hardcore sound can be to it’s detriment as i feel as if the genre was refined later on in the 90s
probably their weakest work since their debut, AG Club’s ‘Brodie World’ is another fun release from the duo but it sadly drops off in quality fairly quickly
it was kinda fun
until the 30 minute mark
It got boring
wlr if it was too long and had bad vocals
IDLES’ debut effort is their rawest, noisiest, and as the title suggests - most brutal. their post-brexit outlook on life in the UK isn’t exactly the brightest and the rough instrumentals and lyrics showcase it wonderfully. IDLES are an all time great punk band. (that first half by the way… wow)
fun J-Rock and post-hardcore mesh, every song is very solid - but none blew me away
‘Didn’t It Rain’ is mastermind Jason Molina’s 8th effort as Songs Ohia and it’s really the point where he starts to incorporate more country ideas that come to shape his masterpiece, and Songs Ohia’s next album - ‘The Magnolia Electric Co.’. A beautifully raw project with wonderful songwriting as we’ve come to expect from Jason. A fantastic record.
there’s not much i can say that hasn’t already been said tbh
well, ggs guys, EP of the year is wrapped up.
seeing Maruja perform live was a seismic experience, these guys are a force to be reckoned with, and their second release reinforces this. ‘Thunder’ was probably my favourite song from 2023 and ‘The Invisible Man’ might take my crown for 2024. All we need now is an album boys…
while never quite reaching the peaks of ‘Origin of Symmetry’, Muse’s third album ‘Absolution’ starts off very strong - and while, yes, it drops off in quality in the second half, i feel as the drop isn’t quite as drastic as some reviews make it out to be. On the whole it’s still a hard hitting, powerful project.
i very recently checked out ‘Attack on Memory’ and loved if - then i saw this came out!…
and i was very nearly very disappointed with this, until that last stretch of 5 songs bought it right back into being a very enjoyable experience!
Wilco doing Wilco things
beautifully warm but also isolated and melancholic, ‘Summerteeth’ is a caring embrace of indie rock and alternative country
everyone talking about Talking Heads in the reviews like this isn’t better than everything they’ve made…
okay fine it’s not that black and white but why can’t more than one amazing dance punk band exist huh
