Autechre - Tri Repetae

I think this album is where Autechre make a completely standalone piece of art for the first time. I love the first 4 tracks so much, they set the tone of the record impeccably and allow the other songs to deviate a little I think Stud and Rsdio are both too long, and I think Overand isn't really my kind of ambient, but I see how all 3 of those songs add to the world this album makes. Excellent stuff.

Madvillain - Madvillainy

Very creative and fun album. Madlib really flexes his production muscles on here, drawing samples from all kinds of sources and styles and making it feel and sound cohesive. I liked how most songs weren't super long and dense, this made the album really easy to follow. Doom's wordplay is hypnotic and his voice fits the instrumentals really well. I thought some songs were kinda corny and some were a little boring. Overall a great album, and probably one of my favorite rap ... read more

Metallica - Ride the Lightning

I like this substantially more than MoP. I thought this was a far more energetic and effective album, with a good amount of range between songs. Great album.

Metallica - Master of Puppets

Decent album. I would have like a bit more variety in the instrumentals on the middle songs, they got long and boring after a few minutes. The highs on here are iconic and amazing though. Maybe today was just an off day for me.

King Crimson - Red

Everyone is at the top of their game. The heavy ass guitar and bass, the flawless drumming from Bill, the sax, strings, trumpet, vocals, EVERYTHING is masterfully executed. The pacing is completely watertight except for the first half of Providence, which in context of the album I find unsettling and brilliant. I feel the same about the buildup on Starless. Overall a damn near perfect record.

I was stupid for having this at a 60 for so long. The first 3 songs are some of the best progressive rock songs I've ever heard, and for them to have been made in the 60s is unreal. The last two I'm less crazy about, they both has some amazing moments but a few long sections that I thought were boring and disrupted the flow of the album. Overall I'm very impressed and have been sleeping on this.

Portishead - Third

Soul crushingly dark album. The production fits the songs so well, and Beth gives some of her best vocal performances yet. Even as a drastic departure from their previous style, it's their best album.

MBV are the masters at repeating the same thing over and over and making it engaging. All these songs have simple song structures but super dense instrumentals and long chord progressions. I think its genius. Brilliant album.

Portishead - Portishead

This is their creepiest and funnest album. I feel like the atmospheres and instrumentals are, for the most part, less soul-crushing and more theatrical, which makes for a lighter experience. (the soul crushing element is best demonstrated on Third) This theatricality is the most over-the-top on Half Day Closing, but its best when more subdued like on the other tracks. Undenied and Mourning Air both have that emotional gut punch feeling that songs like Roads gave me on Dummy. Only You might be ... read more

Autechre - Draft 7.30

In my opinion, this is their deep-listening album. There is a tremendous amount of detail in these songs, and less of an emphasis on groove and more on texture. The sound palette on here is so strange too. It feels less robotic and computerized, and more organic and soft. I always come out of this record liking it, but I never like it as much when I'm actually listening to it. I still feel like I need to "get into" this album even though I've probably heard it 20 times. ... read more

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain

I definitely see how much influence this album had on a billion genres. I think the Maggot Brain solo alone has touched almost all corners of popular music. Excellent playing and vocals across the board. The mixing was a little weird and the pacing wasn't great, but I really enjoyed this up until around halfway through Wars of Armageddon. Overall a great album.

For such a long album this was sequenced very well. The album never got stale, there were just songs I liked more than others. Consistently good, no bad songs, and I would return to most of these songs. But it is a huge time commitment to listen to, and I thought a lot of the songs in the last quarter weren't holding up as well. Overall a beautiful and immersive album.
