Aphex Twin - Collapse EP
78

“Collapse EP” is a kinetic and fun project that stays elusive and entertaining, but isn’t as memorable or structurally satisfying as it should be.

JPEGMAFIA & Kenny Beats - Puff Daddy
85

Very catchy. Damn Peggy.

Injury Reserve - Floss
90

“Floss” is a versatile, fun, and occasionally thought-invoking project that will leave a great impression on you and your aux cord.
The only complaint I have with this album is the slight drop in quality near the middle of the track listing, but overall, this album consistently delivers infectious tracks that you can’t help but enjoy.

Travis Scott - ASTROWORLD
72

On ASTROWORLD, the track listing stays consistent, but each song feels like it needs more.
ASTROWORLD is very well-produced and structured, but each song does somewhat blend into the next, often leaving a forgettable impression, and the last leg of the album loses some of the quality and memorability of the first 3/4.

SOPHIE - OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES
82

SOPHIE’s latest album is nothing less than a beautifully weird and personal glitch pop voyage into self-identity and artificiality, and it works very well aside from some jarring pacing pacing issues.

Eminem - Kamikaze
30

On “Kamikaze,” Eminem is... contradictory, to say the least. His constant defense of his previous LP “Revival” often fights with his claims of “taking an L,” which all occur in the same album. The awful production, pointlessly provocative lyrics, and Eminem’s constant fight between being apologetic or stuck-up all clash to make “Kamikaze” an obnoxious experience, and the occasional fun bars or good flows don’t improve the album as much ... read more

Denzel Curry - TA13OO
86

On “TA13OO,” Denzel Curry proves that he’s one of the most versatile trap artists in the present by rapping about serious subjects over great production; only a few dud songs are present in the track list.

KIDS SEE GHOSTS - KIDS SEE GHOSTS
85

Here, Kanye West and Kid Cudi use their great chemistry to deliver a consistently great short-full-length LP, although the production and structure on some tracks (FIRE, FREEEE) needs improvement.

Edit: Changed the score from 82 to 85.

Kanye West - ye
70

Kanye West’s “ye” is an interesting voyage into the artist’s personal life, but along with his other efforts in 2018 so far, its length and production prevents it from being as memorable and poignant as it should be. Hopefully, Kanye’s future projects will improve on the faults here.

Pusha T - DAYTONA
80

Pusha-T’s “Daytona” works a lot like Kanye’s other production efforts: It’s a satisfying, enjoyable listen, but the short length and downplayed production prevents it from being as good as it could be.

Parquet Courts - Wide Awake!
91

Parquet Courts delivers a great political message throughout the entirety of “Wide Awake!”. The only fault here are some underwhelming tracks in the last leg of the album, but that doesn’t hamper the experience overall.

Death Grips - Year of the Snitch
94

“Year of the Snitch” proves that Death Grips never fails to entertain, even if their latest sound is wildly different compared to the rest of their diverse discography.

Pros: Great, weird production. Loud and perplexing lyrics. BLACK PAINT and DISAPPOINTED are great highlight tracks. The album has a persistent goal to confuse and entertain.

Cons: LITTLE RICHARD is a weaker track, and some tracks work better than others.

Death Grips’ latest effort shows that their sound will ... read more

Young Fathers - Cocoa Sugar
80

Young Fathers’ blend of glitchy pop, hip hop, and lo-fi R&B translates well on “Cocoa Sugar.”

Pros: The album has a persistent soulful and warm sound that plays well in every single track. The oddness and straightforward nature of some songs are executed well, creating catchy tracks like WOW and TOY.

Cons: Some of the album’s quirks aren’t executed that well (FEE FI, WIRE.) The album is also somewhat repetitive.

Overall, “Cocoa Sugar” is a ... read more

Clarence Clarity - THINK: PEACE
72

"THINK: PEACE" is an odd, interesting pop album that compiles and edits Clarence Clarity's previous singles into a tight tracklist.

PROS: Clarence's glitchy production and knowledge of pop create fun, flavorful tracks that compliment each other throughout the listen.

Cons: Surprisingly, the album gets slightly repetitive as Clarence repeats the aspects of some songs into other songs ("SAME?" is a good example.) Also, the instrumental tracks can become uninteresting after a ... read more

mgk - BINGE
20

On "BINGE," Machine Gun Kelly proves that he can't prove anything.

Pros: "LATELY" is ok.

Cons: This "album" feels like demos that were sitting around for Kelly to release at a spike in his popularity. "RAP DEVIL," his Eminem diss, has finally given him a chance to dump those demos after it boosted his popularity. No track is fun, memorable, or exciting in the slightest, and the half-decent diss track's placement on the EP only fuels my thoughts of ... read more

JPEGMAFIA - Veteran
80

"Veteran" by JPEGMAFIA is a great new exercise in trap music. Its loud, idiosyncratic production and versatile vocals allow for a rewarding, although tiring, listening.

Pros: Talented rapping and production that almost never holds up during the album. Funny and clever one-liners. Great tracks: 1539 N. CALVERT; REAL N*GA; THUG TEARS; BABY IM BLEEDING; ROCK N ROLL IS DEAD; GERMS; PANIC EMOJI; MACAULAY CULKIN; I CANNOT F*CKING WAIT TIL MORRISSEY DIES; CURB STOMP

Cons: Shorter track ... read more

Vince Staples - FM!
80

"FM!" is a nice surprise from California rapper Vince Staples. Its quick pace and short runtime make it one of the most digestible and fun rap records of the year.

Pros: Vince and the several other features on the album all work well within their bounds, delivering fun verses and hooks off of Kenny Beats' addictive production. Even the incredibly brief interludes are as catchy and fun as the rest of the tracklist.

Cons: The album's short runtime can often make the album feel scant ... read more

Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
100

It isn’t perfect, but this album takes a new, inventive sound and runs with it until it burrows deep into you.
Screechy guitars, crisp drums, and deadpan vocals all deliver extremely well on this album.
Every song, whether it’s a seven-minute long epic (Satan in the Wait) or a quick and destructive series of moments (The Flammable Man), this album punches well. It’s like Daughters discovered fire, poked a stick in it, and are beating you with it for 48 minutes (but in a good ... read more
