Macklemore is back with another full length LP, not long after his last arguably mediocre release. This time around, however, it is an all feel good album with features on all tracks but one. There are the classic pop rap feel good songs, the classic emotional slow ballads and the quick and "quirky" tracks that just sound like bad imitations of 90's hip hop.

Just being honest, I just thought that shit looked cool

There exists very few artists that can boast about producing one of the most well refined pop records. Susanne Sundfør can do exactly that.
I do not expect anything else to come out this year and sweep me off my feet like Music For People In Trouble has done. After spending a few days listening to this record as well as all of Susanne Sundfør's other projects, I finally feel able to express my thoughts in writing.
Sundfør is in possesion of an incredibly versatile voice and takes full advantage of it with her super varied and refreshing production. The fact that she produces most of her projects herself is just ... read more
There is no definite style that shines through on this record. It sounds like the culmination of the albums that came before it. The super focused style of Drum's Not Dead is nowhere to be seen on Liars' self-titled record. Looking at it holistically, it makes for an incredibly incoherent and disjointed listening experience. The "click" I have had with all the other Liars albums so far is totally absent here. There aren't any memorable moments on this record.
Super percussion heavy and mellow production that features some of the most punchy and crisp drums I have heard in an album. This was definitely the Liars album, I was most excited about. It relies very much on its super mystical atmosphere created by the high-pitched vocals and repetitive drumming patterns. It is a hard swallow, but ultimately a super rewarding listening experience.
There are definitely some less interesting cuts on here, but among those are also stellar gems such as Hold Hands and It Will Happen Anyway, Flow My Tears the Spider Said and We Fenced Other Gardens with the Bones of Our Own.
Liars retreat to a safer and more traditional approach to post-punk on here and it mostly works in their favor.
Liars' debut album is full of experimental post-punk glory, but is ultimately let down by it's incredibly dull and lengthy 30 minute outtro track. The other tracks are great examples of lo-fi raging punk perfection. The lyrics are mostly spit out in classic "hurry" punk rock fashion creating a sense of urgency throughout the whole album that blends perfectly with the repetitive instrumentation.
It is a textbook example of how to create a great traditional punk rock album all the ... read more
Saturation II stands superior to Saturation in respect to its much more fleshed out and multifaceted production. Brockhampton absolutely kills it on their more experimental cuts like Tokyo and Junky. The SCENE interludes are a fun addition too. Can't wait for Saturation III
Watered down emo and hip hop (can you even call it hip hop?) fused in what can only be described as someone passing of himself as sad.
It is not emo and people should stop trying to make this a thing. Maybe, most importantly, people need to stop trying to make this guy the "father" of a hip hop / emo fusion because he is very obviously not capable.
Having only listened to this recently, I can definitely understand the Danny Brown hype now. This album is composed of 19 tracks that just don't sway in quality. The production feels industrial, but manages to stay fresh all across the board. Danny Brown is extremely fun to listen to, not only because of his unorthodox voice, but more so because of the content of his bars. He's not overly sophisticated and he owns it. This crazy diastema teethed guy is one of the best at entertaining through ... read more
Extremely disjointed and full of overblown Frank Ocean-esque synths that are only well utilised in tracks like I Ain't Got Time! and Who Dat Boy?. Yes, this is a definite improvement over Tyler's earlier works, but a relatively weak one at that. Tyler, The Creator once again greets us with uninspired and overtly square lyricism.
Tyler, the Creator takes obvious cues from Frank Ocean and his distinctive alternative R&B production. This, however, has become the gold standard for many albums ... read more
Born on a Gangster Star follows in the footsteps of Black Up's dark and groovy production. While not as experimental, it compensates by being much more lyrically coherent. This is by far my favorite out of the two.
I think most people's issues with this album could be alleviated by just ignoring part 1 of the album and just listening to part 2 and 3 instead.
The album relies heavily on its themes and influences. The thematic influences are a "either you like it or hate it" thing. I personally feel that part 2 and 3 by themselves are masterpieces, but the addition of part 1 just makes it feel bloated
One of the most interesting and eccentric personalities in hip hop, Vince Staples, is back with a banger-packed album that blows just about every single rap record released in 2017 out of the water.
And it's like he aint even trying.
Compared to F#a#infinity, LYAFLAH is much more accessible. It provides a musical landscape so expansive and it is completely up to you to decide how to populate it with your thoughts. It is mediative in its chaos, something very few records can brag about.
She should have stuck to her cartoonish songs. This new attempt to be mature and "aware" falls short due to absolutely uninspired production. The lyrics are shallow and boring.
BORING
Melodrama, uh that's a weird way to spell OVERHYPED
No, seriously though. Great record, but not what people in here make it to be. I do not think it will be an extremely influential pop record. I am not hearing anything new here, though I have to admit what's on here is pretty good.
Favorite track:
Writer in the Dark
Super fun and compelling record that combines fantastic production with equally as engaging lyrics. I'd still say the second half is by far superior to the first. The second half explores much deeper themes and musical landscapes.
Favorite track:
FACE
Incredible first half. The production stays exciting throughout the whole album. The lyrics are really hit and miss, but if you're listening to this for the lyrics, you're already making a mistake. The real star of the show is the super energetic and vibrant production.
Favorite track:
Pity
I am a bit torn when it comes to this album. I had unreasonably high expectations after I heard Saturn and I was generally just stoked to see some of my favorite artists collaborate on such an expansive and ambitious project.
Firstly, the space/sci-fi atmosphere is definitely captured well. It is spacious, luscious but I cannot help but feel that it is sort of underwhelming too. The explosiveness of Saturn hooked me for weeks. The album, however, seems to completely stray away from this ... read more
