Jamila Woods - LEGACY! LEGACY!
70

Big fan of the fusion of dance, RnB, and hip hop on this, makes for a fun listen that combines some of my favorite genres. Woods is a decent singer and songwriter, and her vocal embellishments ooze confidence and comfort.

Favorites: BETTY, GIOVANNI, SONIA, FRIDA, MILES, MUDDY, BASQUIAT, BALDWIN, BETTY (for Boogie)

Worst: OCTAVIA

Logic - Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
40

Logic is incredibly disillusioned in his ability to speak on serious topics in a deep or innovative way, but it’s hard to deny that he is an experienced and talented rapper. His hook game needs help though.

Favorites: Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Homicide, Wannabe, Mama / Show Love, Still Ballin, Keanu Reeves

Worst: Icy

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Fishing for Fishies
70

This is a fun, upbeat psychedelic rock project, with catchy hooks and guitars, but the project lacks a lot of replayability, and noticeably falls off in its last moments. It also doesn't sound that important or bold of an artistic statement compared to other projects in the group's discography.

Favorites: Fishing for Fishies, Boogieman Sam, The Bird Song, Plastic Boogie, Real's Not Real

Worst: Acarine

AJR - Neotheater
20

There are a few songs where they dive into niche topics and ideas with a unique perspective, but goddamn this makes me want to bore a hole into my skull. Their commentary is basic and they try to sound super woke and depressed, but end up sounding corny and edgy. And the fucking production is god awful, trite pop. Having an off kilter melody doesn't make the rest of the synths and drum patterns sound e x p e r i m e n t a l.

ScHoolboy Q - CrasH Talk
60

Y’all acting like Q ain’t always been this mediocre. As for the album, the inconsistent flows and features and generally bad hooks make this pretty boring. And he just sucks at those slowed down, drugged out tracks.

Favorites: Gang Gang, CHopstix, Numb Numb Juice, 5200, Floating, Die Wit Em

Worst: Dangerous

Kevin Abstract - ARIZONA BABY
70

I think Kevin is starting to find his sound with this album. His beats are a lot weirder, fusing more industrial hip hop beats and soulful rock music, and sounding more like iridescence than All American Trash. He’s also rapping about topics that aren’t his teenage crushes and teenage angst. Now it is young adult love and post-fame angst. He’s still keeping his classic GayBarsTM and his sung-rapped flow combo, but I think this is a much more developed and ... read more

Jaden - ERYS IS COMING
20

He can’t sing, he can’t rap, he can’t write interesting music, he can’t come up with an original idea, he can’t choose good production, he can’t get someone to mix his project properly, and he can’t develop an interesting personality.

Favorites: Beautiful Disruption

Worst: New Direction

Anderson .Paak - Ventura
80

This has slowly grown on me. Paak has a knack for writing catchy hooks, and his eccentric vocal deliveries fit this soul sound much better than the more rap oriented songs of Oxnard. The background vocals actually seal this album’s quality for me; the hushed out choirs provide an excellent counterpart to Paak.

Favorites: Come Home, Make It Better, Reachin’ 2 Much, Winner’s Circle, Good Heels, Chosen One, Jet Black

Worst: Yada Yada

BTS - MAP OF THE SOUL : PERSONA
30

I totally forgot every song on this album. There were a few songs that seemed decent, but almost all of it was slothered in over produced and over commercialized electropop.

Favorites: Mikrokosmos, Jamais vu

Worst: Boy With Luv

LSD - LABRINTH, SIA & DIPLO PRESENT... LSD
90

The three present a psychedelic electro pop anthem of an album. The soaring vocals of Lab and Sia harmonize well together, and the thickly laid chorus sections are heavenly and beautiful. The EDM style production is sometimes weak and cliched, but there are still tons of tracks where the vocal and electro synths sound electrifying. Maybe it’s just my soft spot for EDM, but this is a fantastic album.

Marshmello & SOB X RBE - Roll The Dice
40

I thought Marshmello would make it worse, but he actually has no input into this. Which I guess is worse, so fuck this. SOB X RBE is the most generic shit ever.

Edit: This is a terrible review, so I’ll make it a little better. Usually, Marshmello’s production, while sounding like mainstream EDM, is at least discernible from mainstream rap, but here, I wouldn’t be able to even guess that Marshmello was even named as a producer, much less actually producing this. SOB X RBE has ... read more

Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
50

I’m waiting for that moment when I fall in love with this albums just as much as everybody else does, but it hasn’t happened yet. To me, it’s kind of just a slog to finish, with everything dragging out. There are good songs but they aren’t worth listening to the whole album, which struggles with captivating much attention.

Favorites: A Lot’s Gonna Change, Everyday, Wild Time

Worst: Picture Me Better

BLACKPINK - KILL THIS LOVE
60

There are some #bangers on this bitch wow. The third and fourth tracks are pretty bad tho.

Favorites: Kill This Love, Don’t Know What To Do, DDU-DU DDU-DU (Remix)

Worst: Hope Not

Billie Eilish - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
50

There is an excess of bizarre, edgy, and mysterious ideas in the production, lyrics, and concepts, but this leaves a lot of these oddities undeveloped, inconsistent, and irritating after first revelation.

Favorites: all the good girls go to hell, wish you were gay, when the party's over, my strange addiction, bury a friend, listen before i go, goodbye

Worst: 8

Logic - Supermarket
10

I've been listening to this for almost a week and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface against the tiniest nooks and crannies of every intricate decision that went into making this album as terrible as it is.

Favorite: Bohemian Trapsody('s hook is okay)

Worst: Best Friend

Ibibio Sound Machine - Doko Mien
40

I keep forgetting to review this because I don’t care to listen to this. The beats are fun, but the whole thing gets annoying quick, especially with the vocal inflections.

Favorites: I Need You to Be Sweet Like Sugar (Nnge Nte Suka), Tell Me (Doko Mien), Just Go Foward

Worst: Nyak Mien

American Football - American Football
100

A truly dreary and depressing album in every aspect. The lyrics paint a painful outlook and the difficulties in relationships, communication, forgiveness, and the overall struggle to survive. The production is a stripped down, slurred out, and slowly paced selection of weary guitars and plinking keys. The moody vocals slowly drag through each line of the song, and many of the features are a sonically lighter and warmer complement, but the lyrical side of these duets are just as grim. This album ... read more

Flume - Hi This Is Flume
90

With 38 minutes split between 17 tracks, almost every song is left as a small, but developed piece. Gone are the trendy features and pop adjacent sounds, cleaned up for a wide release. This mixtape is raw, with each sonic texture vibrating through oddly sequence patterns. Every synths sticks out at weird angles, and the whole project comes together as a fluid wall of quirky sounds. For a producer that has stayed on the pop side of experimental electronic, this is a noticeably more risky play, ... read more

Dave - PSYCHODRAMA
60

Dave is a great lyricist and has some genius moments, but the album is bogged down by inconsistencies and bad songs, not to mention the generally terrible hooks and beats.

Favorites: Psycho, Streatham, Black, Screwface Capital, Lesley

Worst: Voices

Matmos - Plastic Anniversary
70

A very quirky album made entirely from the sounds of plastic. And it fucking bangs. However, some of the sounds can get pretty annoying, both out of repetition and sonic texture. The overall rhythms are good tho.

Favorites: Breaking Bread, The Crying Pill, Silicone Gel Implant, Thermoplastic Riot Shield, Fanfare for Polyethylene Waste Containers, Collapse of the Fourth Kingdom

Worst: Plastisphere
