On a first listen id say One Assassination Under God - Chapter 1 offers everything Manson promises a fan, but not much more. A throwback to his prime industrial era. often he sounds rejuvenated if not reborn, and I'm just glad he's inarguably still got it. If you are into Manson which the score I gave may tip you off that I am, it's 9 new songs to add to a pretty historical run.
Scaring the ho's music for people that think they need to hurt their ears to listen to good music.
Sing more songs about California in one album than RCHP challenge level Impossible

I haven't experienced this album from start to finish since it came out 3 years ok and didn't know what to expect with a revisit but honestly it's aged like fine wine, This is the same Modest Mouse that made The Moon & Antarctica and The Lonesome Crowed West for sure and while some despondence my have eased up and some of the booze may have soaked up in many ways they are just poignant as they were at their peak.
Sometimes it's just hard for me to get over production quality problems and I think this might be one of those times. There is some decent stuff here but when it all sounds like its recorded on a tin can I'll always be this impressed.
There has never been a more satisfying collection of bits and bobs and peeks at what could have been in the history of music.
If you guys liked this you'll love the actual great metalcore from 20 years ago.
The obvious problem here is the very nature of radio friendly country music is boring. I just like Hootie and The Blowfish and Wagon Wheel so much I thought id give his country stuff a listen and it pretty much went the way any one with common sense would think it would go.
Me rating this lower than any other Gabriel album shouldn't be looked at as a slight, there is just something about the radio friendly production during the peak mainstream 80s Gabriel that doesn't do the same thing for me as his more artistic and experimental ventures. Not to say that So completely lacks any of those attributes it just doesn't have them in spades and the rating reflects that. It was a very good album 80s pop piece though and total recommend.
The weakest Gabriel album I've come across so far in my dive into his discography, sufficed to say thats more of a compliment than an insult.
This is just Avril Lavigne for lonely chronically online teens, how much you can stand that description will tell you how much you'll enjoy it. Personally I don't go listening to music for the sake of a challenge, and this is earwormy enough to be an easy listen at worst. I noticed California was one of the lowest rated songs on this site and one of my favorite songs of the album so maybe thats a damning indictment on my music tastes, but I like to see it as a damning indictment on everyone ... read more
A tale of two albums really. The first 3 tracks are about as milquetoast as it gets, and attempt at a mainstream bounce back maybe, but a misguided one that starts the listener off with a bore. in contrast to that the last 2/3rds of the album are some of the strongest entries in the folk sphere I've heard in the last 15 years. Im truly glad I stuck around Cutting It Close is in the running for song of the year, and Mr. Wine here really tugs at the old heart strings as he wrestles with time, ... read more
Old millennial boomer here to spoil the party I guess. Most of this record sounds like Nu-Metal Morphine. The last track which is just an extended instrumental outro is by far the most enjoyable thing to me. The vocals make me want to not know what hearing is.
This just seems like one of those projects im never going to fully end up behind, I just listened to it on a lark because it was so highly rated on here and only 20 minutes but now I want that 20 minutes back.
