The Black Parade is dead. Long Live Soundtracks For The Blind.
As some who follow me may know, for the longest time, my favourite album has been The Black Parade, My Chemical Romance’s 2006 rock opera. Even though I knew it was my favourite album, I always had a feeling that something would overtake it eventually. While it’s certainly a 100, it’s not flawless, and I felt that there had to be at least one album that I’d be blown away with so much, that I’d think ... read more
I’m surprised it took me so long to get around to this EP, especially after seeing all the hype surrounding it. And I’ve got to say, the hype is real.
Right off, The Shell Shack manages to capture Weezer’s energy and lyricism perfectly, and I’ve got to say it sounds just like something off the Blue Album. The guitar riffs on that track are brilliant and so classically Weezer. The rest of the EP, to my surprise, actually sounds more like the Green Album... but better. ... read more
This album is practically the definition of a beautiful mess. Every song seems a bit off, but it does it in a way that makes it seem all intentional.
Surprisingly for me I much prefer the tracks where Bilinda Butcher has lead vocals on this project, while it was the opposite for me on Loveless. This is mainly because Kevin Shields’ vocals on here don’t seem as developed, and seem a bit more raw than they did on their next effort. This is apparent from the very first track, Soft As ... read more
Car Seat Headrest has done it again. They’ve made another captivating emotional rollercoaster of a piece of music. And it’s one of my favourites so far.
I’ve seen a lot of people list this as one of their favourites from the band, but I’ve also seen a lot of people say it’s just okay, so I didn’t have my hopes extremely high, but they were still relatively high. And, oh boy, did it pay off. First off, The Ending Of Dramamine is now my second favourite song ... read more
Thanks for the brilliant birthday gift, Will, really appreciate it!
Favourite Tracks: Destroyed By Hippie Powers, Cosmic Hero, Cute Thing
Least Favourite Track: Ivy
Because of it being both the 22nd anniversary of the release of this brilliant album, and it being Father’s Day (and this is an album that my dad loves), I decided I’d do redo my review in detail.
Right from the start of my first listen to this album I knew it would be something special. Airbag has probably some of the best drumming I’ve ever heard, and Thom’s voice so amazing on this (as it is on the rest of the album, but especially here). Even though it’s not ... read more
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea was an improvement on this album on every front. And when I say on every front, I mean everything, the songwriting, the mixing, Jeff’s voice, the style, and the overall sound. But that doesn’t mean that this album isn’t enjoyable.
While the album feels very one-note at times, they switch it up enough to feel like each song is their own thing. This album opens up with Song Against Sex, a song that while it probably works better as an opener than ... read more
*Insert White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity Part 2 joke here*
Going into this thinking it would be just more of the same from the last album was definitely not great, as I can confidently say that not only is this quite different from White Light, it’s also better. When I say it’s better, I mean literally marginally better. If I made a list of all the albums I’ve ever listened to ranked, Love Of Life would be directly above White Light From The Mouth Of Infinity. One ... read more
An album starting off with weird baby noises? Yep, that’s Swans.
Going into this album thinking it was going to be a neo-folk album, possibly along the lines of ITAOTS, I was kinda pleasantly surprised by the opener, Better Than You. I don’t really understand how people consider this to be a neo-folk album though, as I see a few folk influences, but mainly just in the use of some instruments that appear in folk, and transform the sound of them so much to the point where it’s ... read more
If there’s one thing I want from an album, it’s a pleasant surprise, and this album definitely delivered on that front.
The first track on here, Vices, starts off with a sample from some old song, and while I wasn’t expecting that, it wasn’t that much of a surprise. But then... the sample suddenly ends, and I’m greeted with Jesse Lacey screaming at the top of his lungs “WE NEED VICES”. Sure, Brand New have tried screaming vocals in the past, but not to ... read more
Disclaimer: This score is completely unironic. Yes, I actually enjoyed it this much.
Big Baller B’s back at it again with brilliant bangers, with some of the best and biggest names on Flex Entertainment featuring on this short but sweet debut album. I was expecting to just listen to this once, and then leave it alone, but after my fifth listen, I can confirm that wasn’t the case. From the very first track, Welcome To The Island, I was blown away, as Big Baller B raps some great ... read more
Controversial opinion here, but nothing on this album beats the MF Doom feature on November Has Come by Gorillaz. That’s not an insult to this album though, because that’s a god tier feature.
MF Doom’s rapping flows so well with the beats and samples that Madlib produces on here, and it was a big shock for me at first, because this was not what I was expecting with my only previous experience with Doom being the aforementioned Gorillaz feature. Even though I did appreciate ... read more
Looking back, I don’t see how I preferred this to Imperial on first listen (please don’t kill me), but just like the 13 EP it has shrunk on me a bit, but I still find it great. I never expected this to be as good lyrically as Imperial or as conceptual as TA13OO, mainly because of Speedboat and the album cover. I know that I shouldn’t pre-judge something based on its cover, but you can’t really blame me for that. Anyway, I didn’t even expect to like this albums ... read more
While a definite lyrical and sonic improvement from Parachutes, this album is still rather messy, and doesn’t reach the heights of Stomachaches. Frank mixes things up on this record with different styles he’s never tried before, adding some piano to the mix on some tracks, and most of the time, it works quite well. The first track, A New Day’s Coming certainly came out of left-field, as it’s a very light, possibly folk-inspired track. It’s certainly unlike anything ... read more
If The Brobecks were given the chance to progress past this album, they could’ve shaped up to be one of the best indie pop bands around. Some of that is carried on in IDKHow, but in a different and refreshing way. You can tell that Dallon poured his heart into these songs, and Love At First Sight remains one of the sweetest songs I’ve listened to.
Favourite Tracks: Love At First Sight, Better Than Me, All Of The Drugs
Least Favourite Track: The Nerve
Do you think Chris Martin knew what he was implying when he sang “I came here with a load and it feels so much lighter now I’ve met you”. I mean, he never specified which kinda load, so you can’t blame me for being suspicious.
Favourite Tracks: Politik, A Rush Of Blood To The Head, Clocks
Least Favourite Track: Warning Sign
Eighteen naked cowboys in the showers at Ram Ranch
Big hard throbbing cocks wanting to be sucked
Eighteen naked cowboys wanting to be fucked
Cowboys in the showers at Ram Ranch
On their knees wanting to suck cowboy cocks
Ram Ranch really rocks
Oh wait, I think I got the wrong ranch.
Favourite Tracks: Emo, Enthused, Boring
Least Favourite Track: A New Hope (what the actual fuck is wrong with Mark Hoppus)
Self-Immolate literally means to sacrifice yourself, so you can already tell this is gonna be pleasant. I certainly didn’t expect this right off the heels of Fishing For Fishies, but depending on how this turns out, I feel like this new album could be better than Fishing For Fishies. Didn’t enjoy this as much as Planet B, but as you can tell by the score, I certainly did enjoy it. I just hope this album’s not completely one-note or anything, seeing as this track did sound a ... read more
How am I supposed to explain to my dad that I want to order a CD that has an androgynous masochist with their tits out on the cover? Also, Hacker is probably the best hip-hop song I’ve heard so far, it goes so fucking hard.
Favourite Tracks: Hacker, Blackjack, Punk Weight
Least Favourite Track: Bitch Please
I unironically really enjoyed some of these tracks. Some of them sound really good, some are really funny... but there are just too many that don’t hit the mark for either of those. The opening track, Melee by A.J. was actually AMAZING. By far the best track on the album, and probably the best meme song I’ve ever heard. Extremely well produced, and a great flow. The Lil Boxx song, $plurgin, was also brilliang, and some other good songs were Limits by Jaewon XXVI, Hectic by Yung ... read more
