The highest praise I can give this album is that oh my lord, the vocals and production on this thing are consistently VERY strong. I love the funky synth sounds on songs like 'Happy Ending' and 'On the Run', and the vocal performances on songs like 'Washed Away' and especially on the penultimate track 'Enough for Love' are in contention for some of the best vocals I've heard all year.
I also love how the instrumentals transition into each other. Now, this isn't a new thing by any means, but ... read more
it's pretty alright. has its highs, has its lows. for example, 'Doe Eyed' is a really good song, and 'Misery Loves Company' had me scared early on that a Friday sequel was inbound later in the project.
production is straight up bad at times, singing is a mixed bag, and lyrics are sorta generic.
project is still fun, give it a listen - this poor woman deserves it after how the internet abused her

draco wasn't the worst thing i've ever listened to so, there's that!

When Raye sings on the titular 21st century blues instrumentals about break-ups and the life of being famous, the album is pretty fun. If you're here for social commentary though, go elsewhere!
Wasn't fully sure who RAYE was before going into this album, and as I finished, I concluded that she's gotta be like, 21 years old max. Like, no offense, but all of the social messages on this album seem so surface-level and like they were taken from TikTok.

Yung Lean AKA jonatan leandoer96 drops a pretty strongly produced (by Frederik Valentin) 8-pack of love-related songs.
Ima be honest, the biggest weak point on this project is obviously Lean's singing. I just don't really buy it outside of the tracks 'Sugar World' and 'Open', which, because of their stronger vocal performances, are easily the best songs on this LP. On the best of the other tracks, it's uninspired and passable, and on the worst, it's a pretty glaring negative.

Sometimes I get this feeling with very bloated albums where I'm actually genuinely physically sore by the end of them. yeahhh, this is one of those albums. like, what the fuck man? 25 songs? this was badddd
Most of the songs (I'll get to the outliers later) aren't THAT bad, moreso just unbelievably mid and boring. I gave the first track an 86 (a score that I'll stand by), probably mostly because it was the first track. Like 3 tracks in though, the sound is overdone and for the next fucking ... read more
certified user score valid. i don't think it'd be as well-received if it came out today, but the impact of A$AP Rocky's LIVE.LOVE.A$AP is undeniable
god i fucking hate this project so much. there are a few good songs - i like 'timezone' a lot - but the lows negate the highs, like, tenfold.

possibly the most thematically/conceptually rich and best produced album by tyler, which is an incredible thing to say given that he's also released igor and cmiygl
it's good. i think a bit overhyped which seems ironic given that my score is higher than the user score average. idk, with how much more i liked the second half than the first half, the project seems conflicting.
i just don't see a strong enough coherency to the tracklist to justify putting the record in the 80s. i like every song individually, but something about it just doesn't come altogether for me.
'a thousand lives' is damn near a masterpiece, and a score of 79 warranting as negative a ... read more
i was actually very close to giving this a positive rating (probably like a 65)... until track 6.
The first four songs range from mid but enjoyable to actually pretty good, but it goes downhill after that. 'Perfect' was even about to be the only 80+ track on the album for me but the ending was a little too drawn out which docked a few points. The smooth, almost lo-fi instrumental on 'No God' is pleasant, but thats about all the positive I can say about the record.
'Unholy' truly is the spawn ... read more
Alright I'm finally gonna talk about this album at length because oh my god I love it so much.
In early 2019, not much was known about the young North Carolina rapper "YBN Cordae". He was in the rap group YBN which was often criticized for their fake gangster persona and corny rapping. But reception around Cordae was different. People loved his earliest tracks, particularly a response to J. Cole's criticism of modern hip-hop. But could Cordae deliver a good project?
Yes. The answer ... read more
Ava Max's newest LP really seems like it seeks to just pop out some radio hits. And while I think this method of music-making is flawed and a style that inherently can't produce top-tier records, for what this project is, it strikes gold.
fav tracks: Sleepwalker, Diamonds and Dancefloors, Dancing's Done
least fav track: Cold as Ice
UPDATE 1/31: 87 -> 89. i am torn on if this deserves a 90
well this sure is shocking
really strong project that coulda been a 90 for me if there weren't a few weaker songs. the best thing about the project though is that it still features yachty's signature sound while successfully experimenting in another genre entirely
*following review is a repost from my article in a magazine when the album released*
I’m a huge Mitski fan. I love indie rock, and “Be the Cowboy” was one of my favourite albums of the 2010s. Naturally, when I heard about this synthpop record that she was releasing, I was intrigued, excited and anxious. I know that when artists try new things, they’re often unfairly crucified. I also know that they’re sometimes fairly crucified.
This was certainly a mixed bag. A ... read more
A great alternative record with perfect songs sprinkled in between.
